Top COVID-19 Takeaways from the Week
Operations Continue at LouVax, Site Open Saturday for Booster Shots
The Louisville Department of Public Health and Wellness proceeded with its third day of vaccinations Friday following site closures due to weather on Monday and Tuesday.
Overall, 2,620 vaccines combined were administered Wednesday and Thursday with an additional 1,523 doses completed Friday.
On Saturday, LouVax is scheduled to open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is a one-time event to accommodate individuals who need their required second-dose shots. We will provide 1,000 vaccinations and all appointments are booked.
Per Guidance from the CDC, 28 days is the recommended interval for the booster shot. While getting the second shot as close to the recommended interval is encouraged, there is no maximum interval between first and second doses for either vaccine.
Here are the key stats for vaccinations in Metro Louisville:
- Citywide, 142,983total doses have been administered between the LouVax site and its healthcare system community partners, Norton Healthcare, UofL Health and Baptist Health.
- Through its LouVax site, the Louisville Department of Public Health and Wellness has given 31,318 doses to date.
Next week's focus at LouVax will include prioritizing booster doses on individuals in tier 1A and 1B. Public and private schools will return for second doses. Additionally, we will begin vaccinating childcare providers and non-traditional instruction (NTI) hubs as well individuals aged 70 and up, especially those in high-risk areas in west and southwest Louisville.

Metro Health Encourages Testing and Safety Amid COVID-19 Decline in the City
At Tuesday's weekly COVID-19 update, Dr. Sarah Moyer, Louisville's Chief Health Strategist reported that Louisville saw its lowest weekly case count since October.
Dr. Moyer said the downward trends in COVID-19 data brings hope, but she still warned that the city is still at a critical incidence rate of spread in the community.
Here are the COVID-19 data metrics for the week of February 16,2021:
- 2,130 positive cases reported
- 39.7 cases per 100,000 population
Continuing her recommendations from the previous week, Dr. Moyer said that residents that are going out in public should get tested. This includes trips to the grocery store and going to the workplace.
"We want to make sure that you're able to quarantine, keep your family and community members safe and that you have proper treatment to prevent serious illness or hospitalizations from COVID," Dr. Moyer said.
