+ Office for Globalization welcomes new program manager
The Office for Globalization is excited to welcome new team member Amos Izerimana!
Amos’ face may be familiar. He was hired on a temporary basis to help the office with communication and organization around our COVID-19 testing events aimed at increasing access to testing for our immigrant communities. Amos joined the Office for Globalization as its new full-time, permanent program manager this month, bringing with him a wealth of experience working with people from different cultures and backgrounds, as well as his own experience as a refugee resettled in Louisville in 2007.
Born in Burundi, Amos has worked for various organizations focused on peacebuilding in Kentucky, The Netherlands, Zimbabwe and Switzerland and is committed to capacity building among developing communities. He is fluent in English, Swahili and Kurundi.
Prior to joining the Office for Globalization, Amos was a legal assistant at Kortz Funke Immigration Law Firm, where he primarily advocated for immigrants in deportation proceedings. Amos is a graduate of the United Nations-created University for Peace, Massachusetts-based Brandeis University, and Kentucky-based Berea College.
Please join us in welcoming Amos!
+ Director of the Office for Gobalization receives first dose of COVID-19 vaccine
Sabeen Nasim, the Director of the Office for Globalization, received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine from the Louisville Metro Dept. of Public Health & Wellness at Broadbent Arena on Friday. Sabeen and her team have been partnering with other community organizations and health care professionals to host COVID-19 testing sites throughout Louisville for members of our global community.
"The process was easy and well-organized, and receiving the vaccination was painless. I am experiencing some soreness in my arm but no other side effects from the vaccine, and as we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, I encourage everyone in our community to get vaccinated," Sabeen said.
The vaccine is administered in the upper arm similar to others, like the flu vaccine.
Learn more about the vaccine and distribution process here: https://louisvilleky.gov/.../covid-19-vaccine-information
Those who receive the vaccine are given a vaccination card detailing whether they received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine and the dates they receive each dose of the vaccine. The card also serves as proof of vaccination.
While at Broadbent Arena, staff members will help you download V-Safe, an app that can be used to report side effects to the CDC and remind you when you need to get a second dose.

+ U.S. Mayors applaud president Biden’s Day One action on DACA and other immigration provisions
On his first day in office, President Joe Biden took executive action on a host of priority issues, including significant changes to America’s immigration system long called for by the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM).
The president has reinstated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects Dreamers, revoked the executive order that excluded undocumented immigrants from the census and Congressional apportionment, ended the Muslim Ban, and stopped the abusive interior immigration enforcement policy of the Trump administration.
In response to these Day One actions, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, who is the USCM President issued the following statement:
“The immigration policies of the last administration did not reflect the values of a great and inclusive country. They were dangerous and inhumane. They created fear and chaos for millions of people, including those protected by the DACA program who are as proudly American as anyone. Mayors applaud President Joe Biden for restoring decency to America’s immigration policy. Dreamers, who are here through no fault of their own, no longer need to live in fear of deportation. By ending the Muslim Ban, we are closing the door on one of the most disgraceful policies in American history. And the President has honored the Constitution by reversing the unlawful effort to exclude undocumented immigrants from the census count.
“Today the President is also sending an immigration reform bill to Congress to establish a new system to responsibly manage and secure our border, keep our families and communities safe, and better manage migration across the Hemisphere. America’s mayors are committed to working with him to make this happen.
“We are grateful that President Biden made these Day One priorities. We all know that much more work needs to be done to create an immigration system worthy of this great nation.”
