Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope this newsletter finds you well.

It has been a quiet week in City Hall as the Metro Council has not yet begun regular meetings for the new year. Committee assignments should be announced soon, and we will return to normal operations by the end of the month. As such, I do not have any legislative updates. I do, however, want to talk a little more about vaccine distribution.

While we have a good set of plans in place, we continue to deal with frustratingly small quantities of vaccine coming to Jefferson County. The good news is that the federal government made changes to its distribution plan this week that make me hopeful we'll see more vaccine flowing to our area soon allowing us to significantly expand the number of people receiving doses. In anticipation, the Health Department has expanded vaccine registration to encompass those in group 1B (see full chart) which includes residents 70 and older. If you fall into that 70 and older category, you can now request a vaccine appointment through one of our healthcare partners. Residents can also fill out the vaccine interest form to be kept informed of where we are in the vaccine process.

I know many of you are anxious to get the vaccine, and I understand some of the confusion and frustration with the process. I have been frustrated at times as well as a successful roll out is critical to keeping people safe, reopening our economy, and getting kids back to school. I have to remind myself that the very first dose of vaccine was delivered one month ago yesterday, and this is the beginning of a process that will play out over many months. Please know that this issue is at the forefront of my focus, and I am working every day to ensure we maximize the number of people vaccinated and that we waste not a single dose.

Proposed Zoning Change - 10700 Westport Road

A virtual neighborhood meeting has been scheduled for Monday, January 25 beginning at 7 p.m. regarding property located at 10700 Westport Road. The applicant is proposing to rezone the property from OTF Office/Tourist Facility to C-1 Commercial in order to construct a drive-through restaurant.

This meeting is an opportunity for neighbors to develop an understanding of the project prior to any formal public hearing. If you would like the meeting link and/or a set of the meeting slides emailed to you, please email Anna Martinez at amc@bardlaw.net.

Cafe LOUIE 2021

LOUIE

Cafe LOUIE is back this year to connect citizens to their elected representatives. Rather than in-person meetings, however, this year's sessions will be done via Facebook Live. They will take place from 9-10 a.m. every Saturday morning from January 23 through March 20 and can include state legislators, Metro Council members, and suburban city mayors. Each elected official is given a brief introduction by the moderator who then asks questions of the panel previously submitted by attendees.

I will be participating in the event on March 20 and hope to see you there. More information as well as the broadcast of the event itself can be found here

Suburban City/Neighborhood Meetings

Being accessible to constituents is one of the most important responsibilities of an elected official. To that end, I am happy to schedule time to attend an upcoming meeting of your suburban city, HOA, or neighborhood association. Whether this takes the form of an annual/monthly meeting or a small gathering outside at the end of your street, I look forward to sharing what's going on in metro government and listening to any concerns or suggestions residents have. Please call or email my office to get a meeting scheduled.
