There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2020.
Residents who normally have garbage/recycling collection on Thursday will have service instead on Friday, November 27. The regular Friday collection will be delayed until Saturday, November 28. (As previously announced, Thursday and Friday yard waste will be collected on Saturdays.)
To view your collection schedule and stay informed about changes, download the Recycle Coach app or use the app on the Public Works website. Residents outside the Urban Service District who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about their holiday collection schedule.
Staffed recycling centers, the Waste Reduction Center, and the household hazardous waste facility, Haz Bin, will be closed Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27. Leaf drop-off will also not be available those days. All four services will resume on Saturday, November 28.

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year! Never blow leaves into the street! Sign up for street sweeping reminders to make sure your car doesn't keep your street from being swept. Go to www.louisvilleky.gov and click Services Near Me.
Of course, residents with yard waste collection can also set leaves out in containers or paper bags. And all Louisville Metro residents will have the option to dispose of them for free at one of three drop-off sites beginning Tuesday, November 10.
The Metro Public Works free leaf drop-off sites will be open Tuesday-Saturdays, November 10 through December 12. Drop-off will not be available on November 26 and 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

Dear Neighbor,
As you probably know, our office has been in communication with the Administration and Department of Public Works regarding the planned, promised, and yet-to-be-delivered reconditioning or "rehabilitation" of Hikes Lane. It's worth remembering that this isn't a typical "repaving" project that you see on most roads in Jefferson County. Because Hikes Lane is constructed of concrete rather than asphalt, the process and construction methods are both more costly and complicated.
In the spring, we learned about the City's latest plan on funding - going to the federal government for a significant portion of the project. That would lessen the local outlay significantly. Louisville Metro will likely cover about 20% of the total costs - about $1.6 million. Those monies were appropriated as part of the FY18 budget. The rest of the costs will come from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which accepts federal funding on behalf of municipalities in Kentucky. Public Works seems confident that part is on track for success.
The latest timeline, which is similar to the timeline laid out last year, involves several key steps:
1) Project Kickoff 2) Scope/Fee (due 11/30/20) 3) Council Resolution (due 2/25/21) 4) Environmental Document (due 4/24/21) 5) Joint Inspection (due 5/24/21) 6) Encroachment Permit (due 5/24/21) 7) Advertise Bid (due 6/24/21) 8) Award Contract (due 7/19/21)
Each of these steps is subject to change until completed, and may be further complicated with delays and/or unintended complications.
We will continue to request updates and definitive commitments from Public Works and the administration, as we have been doing for over four years now.
Hopefully, we are nearing the final stretch.
Thanks,
Brent T. Ackerson 26th District Councilman
