The executive order states that face coverings will be required beginning Friday July 10, 2020 at 5:00PM:

• While inside or waiting in line to enter any: retail establishment, grocery store, pharmacy, hair salon/barbershop, nail salon/spa, tattoo parlor, child care facility, restaurant or bar (when not seated and consuming food or beverage), health care setting, or any other indoor public space in which it is difficult to maintain a physical distance of at least six feet from all individuals who are not members of that person’s household.
• While waiting for or riding on public transportation or paratransit, or while riding in a taxi, private car service, or ride-sharing vehicle, or driving any of the above while customers are present.
• While in outdoor public spaces in which the person cannot maintain a physical distance of six feet from all individuals who are not members of the person’s household and is not otherwise covered by previously issued guidance.
• There are several exemptions to the order, including children who are 5 or younger and any person with a disability, or a physical or mental impairment, that prevents them from safely wearing a face covering.

Starting Wednesday, July 1, Louisville Metro Government will begin accepting and processing applications for both the Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grants and Eviction Prevention COVID-19 Relief Fund. Funding for the two new programs comes from federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, & Economic Security) Act money, with each program receiving $21.2 million toward their mission.

Small Business Assistance

The Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grants program, administered by Louisville Forward, will provide up to $50,000 to small businesses with the goal of helping prevent business closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. At least 50 percent of the program funds would be dedicated to businesses in in low-to-moderate income census tracts.

Eviction Prevention

Eviction Prevention COVID-19 Relief Fund aims to aid low-to-moderate income households that are delinquent on rent payments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will pay for up to three months of rent for households facing COVID-related delinquencies.

Individual households may begin applying for rental assistance through the Office of Resilience and Community Services immediately. To be eligible, households must earn at or below 60 percent of the area median income ($45,840 annually for a family of four) and have had their income impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Greg Fischer encouraged Louisville residents to participate in a survey to share their priorities for Louisville’s next permanent chief of police. He announced that the city had hired the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a non-profit Washington, D.C.-based police research organization to lead the search

• The three most important qualities or skills you would like to see in the next police chief;
• Your suggestions for improving police services; and
• What a new chief must accomplish immediately, and over the next 2-3 years.
• .  The community survey will be up for at least three weeks and can be accessed at https://arcg.is/18fTnS. Metro is working to set up a phone line for those without access to a computer.
• In addition to the survey, PERF will hold listening sessions over the next month, with various focus groups being held across the community.  
• Next steps include convening a small group of community and Louisville Metro representatives to review the list, narrow it, conduct interviews, and send the Mayor their final recommendations.

Lacuna Health, the Louisville-based company hired to conduct COVID-19 contract tracing services with the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW), began its work June 11.  Dr. Moyer outlined the contact tracing process saying, “We will call those who have tested positive for COVID-19 to ask how they are feeling, give them instructions on how to stay safe at home, and get them help they need it.

“We will also ask about people they were in close contact with. Contact tracers will reach out to these people to let them know they may have been exposed so they, too, can quarantine and protect themselves, their family and others from potentially getting the virus.”

JCPS is continuing preparations for the start of the 2020-21 school year.  While no decisions have been made about exactly what the start of the school year will look like, we are considering a proposal to push back the start of the school year.

We are still reviewing several scenarios for the start of the school year including in-person instruction, a virtual option or both. We plan to have a final decision by the July 21st board meeting.

Increased business is leading to new jobs in some industries, with immediate hiring. KentuckianaWorks and GLI have partnered to create a new online jobs board listing current job opportunities in the area. Fairdale Village Green is a new 0.5-acre park in downtown Fairdale adjacent to the roundabout in Metro Council District 13. Partnership and coordination between Metro Public Works, KYTC District 5, Metro Parks, District 13 Councilman Mark Fox, previous Councilwoman Vicki Welch, and State Rep. Jeff Donohue saw the successful new greenspace project at the roundabout in Fairdale come to completion this spring.

There has long been public interest to have a functional community gathering place in the center of Fairdale.

With completion of the Fairdale roundabout construction, Metro Public Works landscape architect John Swintosky (project manager) and former Transportation Planning Supervisor Tammy Markert coordinated with all the agencies above to see the project to its completion.

The new park consists of a 0.5-acre land acquisition, a terraced lawn, a new pavilion, a flag plaza honoring the military services, sidewalks connecting all the park features with the adjacent Louisville Loop, and a signature wall indicating Fairdale as the Gateway to Jefferson Memorial Forest.

The Louisville Free Public Library is now offering limited curbside pick-up of library materials at select locations.

Patrons who currently have items on hold will be contacted by library staff to schedule a pick-up time. We have begun to fill new requests, but because of reduced staffing levels due to the economic impact of COVID-19, there may be delays in fulfilling your requests. For quicker service, select books already housed at your preferred Library branch since moving books between locations will result in a delay in service.

During the summer, keep a beautiful landscape by watering efficiently. Read on for some helpful tips.

• Mow your lawn to the correct height: at least two inches for cool season grasses (those that stay green all year) or about one inch for warm season grasses (those that turn brown in the winter).
• Water early in the day for both lawns and gardens – the earlier the better to minimize evaporation.
• Deep soak the lawn. Most lawns need one inch of water each week. If it’s really hot, try watering more frequently. It’s better to deep soak rather than watering lightly.
• Place a shallow bowl, about one-inch deep, on the lawn while watering. When the bowl is full, you know you’ve watered with the right amount.
• Check hose connections for leaks. A small leak can waste hundreds of gallons a day.
• Remember to water container plants and those with shallow roots more frequently.
• Control where your water goes! Place sprinklers so water doesn’t hit pavement and avoid watering on windy days.
• For large areas, consider installing an irrigation system.  Louisville Water offers a retro-fit irrigation meter on an existing water service, which allows separate metering of irrigation water usage from residential usage. The Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue, our staffed recycling drop-off locations, and the Haz Bin hazardous waste disposal site now open. A map and complete list of the drop-off sites and regular operating hours can be found at our website.

This is a popular disposal site for large loads of unbagged yard waste, tree limbs and stumps up to three feet in diameter, construction debris, and large household items. (Fees may apply.)

Residents can dispose of up to four tires, up to three electronic items, and up to three large household items for FREE!
