Restoring Calm and Memorial Day Gratitude

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This past week has been tumultuous in our community.  Tumult is not healthy for a community.  It is when things are chaotic that we need to focus on stability and calm.  I wrote last week about the tragic story regarding the servicing of a warrant that resulted in the death of an innocent woman, Breonna Taylor, and a LMPD officer, Sgt. John Mattingly, being shot in the leg.

From any objective perspective, this is a tragedy and we need to learn from this.  A woman who was not accused much less convicted of a crime is dead and an officer is shot in the line of duty.  Several things have happened this week: first, the Professional Integrity Unit of LMPD finished their investigation; second, they sent that investigation to Attorney General Daniel Cameron; third, the FBI has announced they will conduct a separate investigation; and fourth, LMPD Chief Conrad has announced his retirement to take effect in June.

Now is the time for everyone to recognize our common humanity.  We can acknowledge that Ms. Taylor’s death is tragic, requires a full investigation, should result in procedural reviews, and at the same time we can support the incredibly hard and important job police officers do.  I reject binary decisions.  For example, I reject that we must either be safe or be open.  We must be safe AND be open.  We must mourn Ms. Taylor’s death, seek justice, AND support our LMPD.  Any other choice will lead to a further deterioration of our community and I will not be a part of that.
