Many of you have heard by now of the tragic situation involving Breonna Taylor. I am heartbroken for Breonna's family, friends, and all those who love her. I also understand condolences go only so far. Events like this often require tangible action, which is why the Metro Council has called for independent investigations into this shooting. I believe a discussion of "no-knock" warrants may be justified as well.

Difficult as it may be, however, this process should be tempered with patience. Police officers have incredibly dangerous and challenging jobs. They operate in situations that don't always lend themselves to a simplicity with which we might be accustomed. A thorough investigation of the details in this case is the right thing for everyone involved and the community's trust in its government.

May 14 Council Meeting

The Metro Council held its first meeting of May last night. A summary of the meeting is below:

Boards/Commissions - Reappointments were made to the Cemetery Board, the Downtown Management District Board, and the Landbank Authority Board. If you are interested in applying to serve on a Louisville Metro Government board or commission, please click here.

Planning - The Council approved changes in zoning for districts 4 and 22 and a request to close several hundred feet of right-of-way in District 17 along Old La Grange Road between Collins Lane and Chamberlain Lane.

Outdoor Dining - An ordinance was passed permitting the temporary use of parking lots, sidewalks, and open areas for outdoor dining. This will be in place until 30 days after the state of emergency announced by Governor Beshear is rescinded.

Metro Budget

We are two weeks into our budget hearings. To this point, we have heard from several metro departments, discussed the non-profits that have applied for external agency funding, and held two public hearings. Next week's schedule is as follows:

May 18 - Waterfront Development Corporation (3:30 p.m.) and the Louisville Metro Police Department (4:30 p.m.)

Compost Bin & Rain Barrel Sale

Did you know that out of all the waste that goes to our local landfill every year, 26% could have been composted? Did you know that capturing rainwater from your roof/downspouts can help ease the burden on our combined sewer system during rain events and save you money on your water bill?

If these issues are important to you, the Louisville/Jefferson County Waste Management District has an event that might be of interest: a compost bin and rain barrel sale. You can shop online until June 6 and pick up purchased items at 1030 Phillips Lane on Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Staff will wear personal protective equipment and can help place items in your vehicle.

Your Dog and Utility Workers

With many people working from and spending more time at home, it's likely your dog may be spending more time outdoors during the day. Please be mindful of this when LG&E meter readers, field technicians, etc. visit your home. When possible, keep your dog away from the meter on reading days or when work is scheduled on your property. You can find your scheduled meter reading dates in the top section of your monthly LG&E bill or when you sign in to your online account.

This time of year usually means thousands of people heading out to the Buy Local Fair hosted by the Louisville Independent Business Alliance. Though the in-person event won't happen, we can support our favorite local establishments this year through LIBA's Virtual Buy Local Fair. This 24-hour special event begins Sunday at noon.
