The minds of our friends, neighbors, and loved ones are centered on a relatively new reality. Our community is confronting a serious global threat to public health, the COVID-19 virus. We may be doing so for the coming weeks and months.
There is still much we don't know, but we do know some important ways we can work together and rise to the challenge. While nothing about this is pleasant, the coronavirus is here and we must care for each other, and care for ourselves as the future unfolds.
By now, you probably know that JCPS, Catholic schools, and other private and parochial schools are closed for the next few weeks. Many businesses are implementing work-from-home efforts, and those who are elderly or have their immune systems compromised should remain home as much as possible. Metro-sponsored events and events at Metro Government locations have been cancelled for at least April 5th.
Today, Metro Council announced appropriating $2.7 million to support those who are impacted by this new virus. This is an important step, but the most important thing we can do is maintain our distance from one another and make sure we wash our hands often and refrain from touching our faces.

Until at least April 5th, Mayor Fischer has cancelled all City-permitted events or events held in Louisville Metro facilities.
This includes, but is not limited to: events at local libraries, Derby Festival events, the Give-A-Day Week of Service,
AARP Tax-Aide, has a mission to serve any person who comes through the door, with special attention to those 60 and older.

To help the tax professional accurately determine EITC eligibility and prepare returns, individuals should bring:
- Picture ID and Social Security cards for everyone listed on the return
- Copy of 2019 tax return with all attachments and schedules
- W-2s and 1099s from your employers
- Other 1099s for interest, dividends, state tax refund or other income
- 1095-A for health insurance
- 1098 for education credit, plus a detailed financial statement from the school
- Bank account number and routing number for direct deposit as well as savings account number (if applicable)
- Childcare information, including Provider ID and actual amounts paid
- Summarized list of other income/expenses for those who itemize or are self-employed

If you'd like to apply for a 30% Senior Citizen Discount of the amount billed for sanitary sewer service and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge, please print, complete and return the form. You must be able to provide documentation verifying:
- you are the legal title/leaseholder/renter of the property
- you are 65 years of age or older
- your household gross income is $35,000 or less per year.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is offering free radon test kits while supplies last.
You can request a kit by calling 574-6650 or visiting https://louisvilleky.gov/government/health-wellness/radon.
Radon is a gas that you cannot smell, taste or see. It forms naturally when uranium, radium and thorium break down in rocks, soil and groundwater. People can be exposed to radon primarily from breathing radon in air that comes in through cracks and gaps in homes and other buildings. Radon can cause lung cancer through prolonged exposure. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, behind smoking, and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, causing between 15,000 and 22,000 lung cancer deaths each year.
The entire state of Kentucky is at high risk for radon exposure with about 40 percent of homes estimated to have unsafe levels. The only way to know if radon exists at dangerous levels in your home is to test for it.
