COVID-19 (coronavirus) Preparedness

COVID-19

As of March 2, no cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) had been reported in Louisville or Kentucky.  But Louisville’s Department of Health and Wellness is working with local, state and national partners to stay informed and adapt to the changing COVID-19 outbreak.

Louisville Metro has a website page devoted to the issue.  It currently includes links to information from the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization (including a video on handwashing), as well as a discussion of local preparedness. Arm yourself with accurate information and facts!

Louisville’s page will be updated as there are new developments.  You can access it here.

Lexington Road Reconfiguration Open House

Lexington Road

One of the complaints I frequently receive is the speed of vehicles on Lexington Road, east of Grinstead Drive, and safety issues for all users on that stretch of road.  To make conditions safer, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is proposing a reconfiguration of Lexington Road from Grinstead Drive to Alta Vista Road.  The proposal would create a center turning lane and bike lanes on either side of the road, similar to what has been done on Lexington Road from Payne Street to Grinstead Drive.   That project has made the road safer for all users, including motorists.

The proposal is to restripe the road with the new lanes when Louisville Water Company’s work in the area wraps up and the road is repaved.   Please join us for an Open House to review the plan on Wednesday, March 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, at the Girl Scouts building, 2115 Lexington Road.

Mayor’s Give a Day Funding Application – Due March 6

Mayor's Give a Day

Thanks to the support of several generous donors—you have the opportunity to apply for funding to cover the cost of your Mayor’s Give A Day Week of Service (MGAD) volunteer project supplies!

To be eligible to apply for funding, you must first post your volunteer opportunity on the Metro United Way MGAD webpage. Each project must have a specified time, date, and location to qualify. If you are the volunteer administrator for your organization, click here to request login credentials OR forward this email to the person who will be posting opportunities for your organization so they can request login credentials.

Organizations can apply for funding for multiple projects. However, each project must have its own individual posting on the webpage, and the total amount requested by each organization must not exceed $250. Because funding is limited, each organization should list the priority of each project on their application.

These funds are meant to be used in their entirety during MGAD, and funds will not be disbursed for any projects that cannot be completed during this week.

You may complete the funding application here.

All requests must be submitted no later than March 6, 2020. Notification of awards will be sent via email by March 18, 2020.

For those who are awarded funding, invoices and receipts of the money spent must be sent with an executive director’s signature by May 8, 2020, to the contact information listed below.

Reimbursement checks will be mailed to agencies by May 31, 2020.

Please contact Ashley Pirtle at 292-6135 or email Ashley.Pirtle@metrounitedway.org if you have questions about the MGAD funding process.

Congratulations D9 Black History Honoree, Lavel White

Lavel White

On Thursday, February 20, the Metro Council and the Community Affairs Committee celebrated at the 18th Annual Black History Month Program. I had the honor of recognizing D9 resident Lavel White for his service to the community.

Lavel is not new to community service. Lavel lost a friend to community violence as a teen which led him on this journey. He has worked with the Network Center for Community Change (NC3) as a youth video coordinator for Let The Kids Grow with Master P, and previously served as a member of the West Louisville Violence Prevention Work Group. Lavel received a B.A. in Communication and minor in Pan African Studies from the University of Louisville. He went on to start his own business and has produced documentaries for Louisville Metro Housing Authority, including More Than Bricks and Mortar: The Sheppard Square Story and More Than Bricks and Mortar: Smoketown A New Beginning. He also produced "We All We Got," Hood 2 Hood, a documentary about violence and incarceration and the effects it has on the inner-city. Lavel was selected as a 2019 BMe Genius Fellow and received a generous grant to contribute towards a community impact project of his choosing. He was also selected as an Ignite Louisville Fall 2019 Class member.

Lavel has been working in the videography field since his freshman year of college. He has experience working with video production equipment to film, record, edit and make videos for non-profits, community organizations and individuals to document their stories and experiences.

Lavel most recently produced a documentary about the Beecher Terrace housing development and its revitalization efforts. He was the director and producer of “The Beecher Terrace Story” and oversaw the production, interviews and editing of a 30-minute historical film about its rich history and existence. The documentary has had community wide screenings in the last month. The film was funded by Vision Russell and the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative.

Lavel also has experience working as a production assistant and field producer on the Matter of Fact television show with Soledad O’Brien. They are currently creating television segments about the Russell a Place of Promise efforts in the Russell transformation. The pieces have aired nationally, and they are being produced by Starfish Media and Hearst Television.

Congratulations, Lavel, and thank you for your service.

Volunteer Ambassador Program

Parks

Do you love our Metro Parks and want to take a bigger role in your community? Do you believe in taking care of them as you would your own backyard? Louisville Parks and Recreation is seeking 10 Volunteer Ambassadors willing to keep an eye out on their neighborhood parks, help guide volunteer projects and make suggestions for park improvements.

“We are going to rely on our Volunteer Ambassadors to be our eyes and ears in the field,” said Dana Kasler, Director of Parks and Recreation. “They are going to play a pivotal role in engaging the public and strengthening our park system.” Volunteer Ambassadors must be at least 18 years of age, agree to submit an online application and complete a training led by Louisville Parks and Recreation. The department is hoping Ambassadors will commit to serving one year at a selected park, averaging approximately 1 ½ hours of service work per week. For more information, check out this link
