Working Through the Flood

Crews from our Signs & Markings and Road Operations Divisions worked around the clock to mitigate the effects of last week’s flood. Signs & Markings began work last Tuesday by loading and staging barricades and flood safety signage, staging and deploying said equipment to high-risk areas, and monitored flooded areas. As temperatures dropped, standing water turned to ice; creating slick roadways. Road Operations crews quickly treated hazardous areas with ice-melting salt, keeping roadways safe for travel. No injuries have been attributed to this weather event. The teamwork, coordination and dedication of both Divisions, and all personnel involved in handling this weather event, speaks to Public Works & Assets’ commitment to keeping our roadways and citizens safe!

Recycling Workshop Presentation

Karen Maynard, Public Education Supervisor for the Solid Waste division, presented at the 2020 National Recycling Coalition Market Development Workshop last week in Memphis, TN.

This opportunity stemmed from the Foodservice Packaging Institute (FPI) Community Partnership Program which Louisville joined in October 2017. Our local recycling facility committed to accepting paper cups, plastic clamshells, and other takeout containers while the Community Partnership Program sponsored an awareness campaign that included digital advertisements and promotional materials. Over the following two years, Karen has been continually educating residents about recycling while also tracking progress. She shared about her experience with FPI’s Community Partnership Program through two webinars and most recently at the workshop last week in Memphis. She was part of a panel of speakers discussing public, private, and industry partnerships.

During her presentation, she shared that the Community Partnership Program helped boost pageviews on the website and increased signups for Louisville’s waste app, Recycle Coach. Although the average monthly tons of curbside recycling (in the Urban Services District) has gone down slightly, the contamination rate has also gone down, reaching an astonishing 5-8%. Karen’s weekly trivia on the Nextdoor app, Know Waste Wednesday, has proven to be a popular way to increase awareness and engage with the community about reducing waste and recycling. Education should be ongoing and through various forms of communication. It works best in conjunction with other city departments, the local recycling facility, our Waste District, residents, business owners, and more.

“There are so many moving parts and systems that have to work together to keep recycling participation up and contamination down,” said Karen. “FPI’s Community Partnership Program acted as a catalyst for me three years ago when I was brand new to the department. I was able to take the Partnership and turn it into many opportunities for education and awareness.”

Waste Reduction Center closed due to maintenance (updated info)

Beginning Monday, February 24, 2020, the Waste Reduction Center will be closed for maintenance until further notice. Below is a list of private waste collection vendor as an option (for a fee) to use while our Center is closed.

Large Item Collection in Area K

Yard Waste Collection - by request only

From January 20 - March 27, yard waste will be collected on your normal day BY REQUEST ONLY. Call 311 or 574-5000 to request yard waste collection. Regular yard waste collection will resume the week of March 30. (Residents with private waste haulers should contact their company about yard waste collection.)

Reminder-2020 Census: Help spread the word; be counted!

           The U.S. Census will help determine Louisville's future for the next 10 year — representation in government, the allocation of federal resources affecting communities and families, education funding, and much more. 

Mayor Greg Fischer and the Louisville Municipal Complete Count Committee are working to help ensure a complete and proper count of all Louisville residents, and are seeking the community's help in getting out the word. The official Census 2020 date is April. In four weeks invitations will arrive at households and residents will be able to respond to the 2020 Census! Learn more.

Timeline

• March 12-20 – An invitation to respond online to the 2020 Census.
• March 16-24 – A reminder letter.
• March 26-April 3 – A reminder postcard. (if you haven’t responded yet)
• April 8-16 – A reminder letter and a paper questionnaire.
• April 20-27 – A final reminder postcard before the Census follows up in person.

Where are people counted?

• Count people at their usual residence, which is the place where they live and sleep most of the time.
• People in certain types of group facilities on Census Day are counted at the group facility.
• People who do not have a usual residence, or who cannot determine a usual residence, are counted where they are on Census Day.

Dog of the Week:

George is a sweet, gentle dog who was abandoned and starving when Animal Control was called to rescue him from life on a chain. The approximately 4-year-old Pit Bull’s personality has made him a staff favorite at the LMAS Shelter. Now he needs a family to show him the sweeter side of life.  George’s adoption fee is waived thanks to the Pay It Forward Free Adoptions Program. George weighs 46lbs. and he’s already neutered, vaccinated & microchipped. George can be tested with potential fur siblings by request. Gorgeous kitty Lennox needs a furever home! The approximately 1-year-old Tabby is very friendly, curious and gets along with other cats.
