Metro Council Organization

The Metro Council is almost finished with the process of organizing for 2020. Earlier this month, District 6 Councilman David James was elected to serve as president of the Metro Council and caucus leaders were chosen. Committees have now been set and chairs/vice-chairs have been named. The last step is filling in committee members. This information should become public next week. A brief description of what each committee has responsibility for is below:

Appropriations - Neighborhood Development Funds, Capital Infrastructure Funds, and other Council expenditures.

Budget - Metro government's annual budget, budget adjustments, budget reports, etc.

Community Affairs, Health, and Education - health and education discussions as well as broader community issues such as homelessness, vacant properties, food insecurity, etc.

Economic Development and Labor - labor contracts, economic development incentives, and oversight of Louisville Forward and Develop Louisville.

Government Oversight/Audit - appointments to metro boards and commissions, Council rules, and oversight of metro departments.

Parks and Sustainability - discussions or legislation regarding the metro park system and the issue of sustainability.

Planning and Zoning - rezonings and other planning related cases, amendments to the Land Development Code, and issues regarding annexation.

Public Safety - police, EMS, Emergency Management, fire, Metro Safe, and other safety issues.

Public Works - roads and paving, sidewalks, infrastructure, lighting, and other topics related to public rights-of-way.

Interacting With City Government

I am happy to be your first call should you have a question or require assistance regarding metro government. There are numerous departments and related agencies and it can be a daunting process to begin. However, the city website has many helpful resources if you know where to find them. The list below is not comprehensive, but does give you an idea of what the city offers.

Budget - the Office of Management & Budget has a page listing the current capital and operating budgets in detail.

Police - click here to find a map detailing crime in your area, sign up for email alerts, and more.

Codes and Regulations - click here to follow up on an electrical, HVAC, or property maintenance inspection.

Legislation - many of the most requested ordinances as well as a link to search all metro ordinances can be found here.

Public Works - the Public Works page offers information on recycling, how to dispose of large items, snow removal, and signing up for its weekly newsletter.

Mobile Apps - click here for a listing of mobile apps such as Best Parks Ever which allows the user to find the closest metro park, search a calendar of events, and even make a tee time.

Free Income Tax Service

VITA

The closest tax preparation site for District 17 residents is Eastern Area Community Ministries, 9104 Westport Road. Tax season hours at this location will be Wednesdays from noon until 2 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Northeast Regional Library Floor

Some of you may have noticed the condition of the floor at the Northeast Regional Library. There is an issue with the sealer used on the tiles that makes it very difficult to remove any markings. Library staff is actively working with the contractor and architect to identify a solution and get the problem resolved as quickly as possible.

E-Newsletter Suggestions

Are you interested in what actions metro government has taken in regards to sustainability? Curious about the local job market and Louisville's readiness for the years ahead? Are you concerned about the homeless population and interested in understanding more about that issue? Do you have a question regarding a public safety issue in your neighborhood?

My goal is for these newsletters to be as useful as possible. With that in mind, please let me know of any issues, topics, or questions you might like to see addressed in the future.
