A reflection upon 2019 brings a barrage of thoughts to mind. My first year as your Councilman has certainly been a roller coaster year with looking for additional revenue, working on balancing a budget that required numerous cuts to an already lean government, meeting more constituents at neighborhood meetings, participating in numerous cleanups to keep our area litter free, which is a never ending battle and welcoming new economic development venues to the area. From a customer service point of view, the office assisted 2,797 residents with a concern resulting in referrals to other governmental agencies for results. Over 800 of these 2,797 were to report dumping! We followed back up with over 660 individuals for updates. *Please – if you see someone dumping and can get a photo of the license plate easily or have cameras on your home that caught someone dumping, share that information with Solid Waste or LMPD. Dumping is expensive for government to clean up, by getting a license plate, we are able to impound the vehicle, place a fine on the person as well as the bill for the cleanup. The car remains impounded until all fees are paid – and there is a fee for impounding and storing the vehicle as well. Help us keep our neighborhoods clean!* Council was able to work with Mayor Fischer and ensure that garbage and recycling pickup will remain weekly. Previously, if there was a holiday they were just skipped that day. However several Holidays were changed to "no pick up" that week. This is a public health issue and weekly service has been restored. In the spring we saw the opening of O’Reilly’s Auto Parts and Thornton's at the corner of Bluegrass and Taylor Boulevard. This Thornton’s continues to be one of the busiest in the community. Across the street from Thornton's, we were able to keep the drug store – the former Rite Aid is now a Walgreens. New restaurants opened at Colonial Gardens across from Iroquois Park. These restaurants offer more options for individuals going to the amphitheater for a show or attending the Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular. With the completion of the Water Company work along Eastern Parkway, several streets in the St. Joe neighborhood were paved. Also in St. Joe's we have the development of the "Swiss Village" a residential community at the old Swiss Hall site. The Zanzabar has improved their parking lot by paving, stripping and has added shrubbery. Investment in our parks continues with a special project at Wyandotte Park the result of public/private partnerships. Louisville Parks Foundation, LG&E, Churchill Downs and Metro Government contributed to bring soccer fields to Wyandotte park. Nearly every time I go by there children of all ages are playing together. Other important items from the year, the expansion at Churchill Downs to offer an equine hospital and quarantine facility for races horses brings year round jobs. Catholic Charities locating their headquarters along 4th Street helps with the University Corridor Plan implementation and brings full time jobs to our community. The announcement of Churchill Downs to build a hotel on their property solidifies their commitment to the community. Nearly 300 year round jobs will be in place upon competition.
Thank you for your support this year and I look forward to a great 2020.
