| Dear Neighbor,
Today we learned of a rather heroic act by a couple members of the Louisville Metro Public Works team to an elderly neighbor in our district. They heard the calls for help from an elderly gentleman, who had fallen in his home. City workers not only came to his aid, helped him up and to safety, but offered to stay and help until EMS arrived. We should all be thankful and proud that these fine folks responded to our neighbor's call. Hopefully, whenever any of us is in need we will be recipients of such kindness. When we have the opportunity to help another, hopefully we will all be alert enough to notice our neighbor in need and selfless enough to take the time to do what we can. After all, that's what being part of a community is - caring for each other.

The yard waste winter schedule will begin January 21, 2020 and goes through the end of March, 2020. During this time yard waste will be collected on your normal day BY REQUEST ONLY. Call 311 or 574-5000 to request yard waste collection. Regular yard waste collection will resume in the spring.

As part of the approval process, the Bowman Area Neighborhoods Plan will be presented before the Planning Commission on Thursday, January 23 at 1:00pm at the Old Jail Building, 514 W. Liberty St. This is a public hearing, so please consider joining us in voicing your support for this planning effort. Note: The agenda for this hearing will be posted later this week.
Christmas tree drop-off will also include leaves this year. Drop-off sites will be available for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents at four locations. The Hubbards Lane site will also instantly recycle Christmas trees in to mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use. Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. All lights and ornaments should be removed from trees before they are set out or dropped off. Residents may also drop off loose leaves. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.
DROP OFF LOCATIONS Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Waste Reduction Center will close at 3 p.m. on Saturdays December 26 - January 31, all locations will be closed on Wednesday, January 1.

Metro Public Works will also provide curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Services District (the old City of Louisville boundaries) after the holiday. Beginning Wednesday, December 26, residents with City curbside yard waste pickup may set their Christmas trees and greenery out on their regular collection day. Trees must not be in plastic bags, and all decorations must be removed. Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when tree pickup is available.

The Louisville Metro Waste Reduction Center at (636 Meriwether Avenue) provides a means for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents to properly dispose of tires and household bulk waste including metals, appliances, electronics, tree limbs and stumps up to three feet in diameter, unbagged yard waste, construction debris and furniture. *Up to three household junk items may be dropped off at no charge per day. VITA Tax Assistance program has been offering free tax preparation to individuals and families under a certain income bracket in our community for years. This organization depends on volunteers to help prepare taxes and greet clients. We hope you’ll consider joining the team!

Metro Animal Services will waive penalties for Jefferson County pet owners who purchase or renew Pet Licensing by Jan. 31. The Louisville Metro Animal Ordinance requires owners of cats, dogs and ferrets to purchase a one-year license for every pet.
“It’s the start of a New Year, and everyone is preparing for tax time, but it’s also a good time to make sure your pet’s affairs are in order,” said Ozzy Gibson, MAS Director. “Right now, we’re encouraging pet owners to purchase or renew pet licensing during the month-long grace period. It’s just $10 for a one-year license – no fines attached.”
Pet owners residing in Jefferson County are required by law to purchase a yearly pet license for each cat, dog or ferret they own and must provide proof the pet’s Rabies vaccination is current. A one-year Pet License for an altered (spayed or neutered) pet is $10; for a three-year altered Pet License, the fee is $27. MAS offers a discounted rate for Senior Citizens: pets must be altered to qualify, and the discount is limited to two pets per household. Pet owners with current violations or fines unrelated to animal licensing will not be eligible for amnesty.
Jefferson Country pet owners can avoid potential fines associated with the failure to purchase or renew a pet license during the amnesty period from Jan. 1 - 31. Fines and fees can quickly add up once a pet enters the shelter. The boarding fee for an unlicensed pet is double the cost for a licensed pet at $30, plus an additional $10 per day. That doesn’t include an impoundment fee of $25 and other fees related to a pet’s stay in the shelter.

Purchasing or renewing pet licensing can be done four convenient ways: in person at Animal House Adoption Center, online, at a participating Veterinarian office or by mail. To purchase or renew Pet Licensing in-person, visit Animal House Adoption Center daily from 12-6pm.

To purchase or renew by mail, visit the website to download and fill out a pet licensing application. Checks should be made payable to Louisville Metro Animal Services and include an additional 50 cents for postage. Mail the pet licensing application and check to Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road, 40218.
