Dates are December 26 to January 31, but all locations will be closed on Wednesday, January 1. 

Metro Public Works will also provide curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Services District (the old City of Louisville boundaries) after the holiday. Beginning Wednesday, December 26, residents with City curbside yard waste pickup may set their Christmas trees and greenery out on their regular collection day. Trees must not be in plastic bags, and all decorations must be removed. Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when tree pickup is available.

Councilman Mulvihill, Councilwoman Nicole George walk 3000 block of Preston Highway with business owners, local leaders

Councilman Mulvihill and Councilwoman Nicole George met with neighborhood leaders, business owners and Code Enforcement officers to survey the 3000 block of Preston Highway Thursday to find areas for improvement. In the photo above, Councilman Mulvihill and Councilwoman George spoke with Metro Code Enforcement officers and others near the entrance to the North Audubon Neighborhood.  In the photo at left, Councilwoman George made notes on a clipboard along the way as Councilman Mulvihill and Mary Rose Evans of Parkway Village observed a property.

The District 10 and District 21 leaders are working together with neighbors, business owners, economic development, code enforcement, developers and others to identify opportunities for improvements to this area.  In the photo at right, Councilman Mulvihill, Councilwoman George and Keith Tennill, owner of Probilt Complete Care Care, talked about possibilities for properties along Preston Highway.

The group braved Thursday morning's bitter cold to survey this area on foot. Betty Krekel honored for longtime service to Girl Scouts

If you were involved in Girl Scouts in Louisville, you probably know Betty Krekel. She served the Girl Scouts for 48 years, as registrar and as a friendly face at the front desk.  She also served as the president of the Order of the Silver Trefoil, an organization for women who have been involved in Girl Scouting for more than 25 years.  Councilman Mulvihill personally delivered a Metro Council Proclamation to the Krekel household in Germantown today thanking Betty Krekel for her service to generations of girls.  We also extend our belated congratulations to Betty and her husband Ken J. Krekel, who recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Post-holiday garbage and recycling collection restored Louisville Metro Government is reversing a policy that had suspended residential garbage, recycling and yard waste collection within the Urban Services District on four holidays, due to citywide budget cuts for 2020 Fiscal Year. Although the policy was implemented on Labor Day, Mayor Greg Fischer’s administration and Metro Council have worked out an agreement to split the estimated $70,000 for services on the remaining three holidays, beginning with New Year’s Day. Yard waste winter schedule The yard waste winter schedule will begin January 21 and continue until the end of March. During this time yard waste will be collected on your normal day BY REQUEST ONLY. Call 311 or 574-5000 to request yard waste collection. Regular yard waste collection will resume in the spring.

District 10 events

Holiday break activities for kids at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center and other sites

Just because the kids are out of school doesn't mean there isn't a lot to do. For more information, click this link. 

Each of the city’s 14 community centers will be open throughout the break, with organized winter break activities planned at Beechmont, Sun Valley, and Cyril Allgeier community centers. Centers are equipped with WiFi, computer labs, gyms, exercise equipment and more. The centers are open Monday through Saturday, and will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s days. A highlight of the holiday season is a free winter break sports camp offered by University of Louisville basketball legend Robbie Valentine at Cyril Allgeier on December 30-31. The Louisville Free Public Library will offer more than 50 free programs for kids, teens, and families while school is out, including: storytimes, crafts, film screenings, games and more. As always, the library offers a wide selection of books and DVDs to keep kids reading and entertained during the break – all for free. Also returning for the holidays – the Southwest Regional Library will host the K & I Model Train Show December 23 to January 5. The show is free and open during regular library hours. The Kentucky Science Center and Louisville Zoo are offering day camps for children ages Pre-K through grade 6. Children can attend as many days as they like or just just stop in a day at a time to  learn about coding, robotics, engineering, animal habitats and more. Winter Camp Registrations are now open for Winter Day Camp at the Nature Center. Kids ages 6 to 12 can enjoy hiking, nature games, and crafts with LNC Educators in the great outdoors. 14th Illegal Dumping Impound of 2019

From Solid Waste Management: The Metro Solid Waste Enforcement team located and impounded its 14th vehicle this year for illegal dumping. A resident of District 4 reported that couches were dumped in their alley and submitted video footage captured by their security camera. The video was of high quality, but the license plate was not visible. A still image was posted on the Public Works Facebook and Nextdoor page asking for assistance identifying the individual. The power of social media worked again! On Friday, December 6 the Enforcement team located the vehicle in the 2300 block of Payne Street. In total, the illegal dumper received a citation with fines and fees totaling $750. Also, they will have to pay approximately $250 for impound and storage fees. Anyone can help catch illegal dumpers! Cat of the week: Bart Bart is a senior shelter cat who would like to have a home for the holidays. This senior had a loving home until his owner could no longer care for him. But their love for Bart is evident to anyone that meets the super friendly, social kitty. Adopt the 15-year-old black beauty with the striking yellow eyes for free, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Bart weighs 13 pounds. He’s already neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Dog of the week: Paws Do you have room in your home for a senior shelter dog? Paws is an approximately ten-year-old Labrador Retriever/Chow Chow mix who moves a bit slowly but still has a lot of love to give. Paws is friendly with people and other dogs at the shelter. He would be a good companion for someone looking for a laid back dog or buddy for an older pet. Paws can be tested with kids, other dogs or cats by request. Pit Bull of the week: Cupcake Did you know LMAS offers free adoptions for adult Pit Bulls? Don’t shop, visit the shelter to adopt a Pit Bull like Cupcake. The stunning two-year-old is sweeter than a cupcake and an awesome sidekick. Cupcake loves an adventure, whether it’s a trip to the park, pet store or just running errands. She’s also a great co-pilot and walks well on a leash. At home, Cupcake would be happy to sit on your lap or cuddle up next to you for pets and hugs. An approved adopter can take home Cupcake for free, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Cupcake weighs 44 pounds. Spay, vaccinations and a microchip are included with her adoption. Cafe LOUIE schedule for 2020 to connect citizens to their elected representatives

Café LOUIE is back in 2020 to connect citizens to their elected representatives. From 9 to 10 a.m. each Saturday morning from January 11 through March 21, participants are offered refreshments and conversation. Elected officials will be given a brief time for prepared remarks and to answer a few pre-selected questions submitted by attendees. The focus of these meetings is engagement through personal conversations and are open to the public.

JustServe.org is a free volunteer website dedicated to bringing communities together through volunteerism. Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see. Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

Councilman Mulvihill is committed to providing carts to District 10 residents at a reduced cost. These recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted.  The photos at left show the sizes: 64 gallon on the left, 95 gallon on the right.

The carts normally cost $53, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.  If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911)

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
