Meeting regarding proposed subdivision at 2814 Newburg Road

Adjoining property owners and neighborhood group representatives met Monday with Highland Preserve developers proposing a subdivision at 2814 Newburg Road. The subdivision would not require a change in zoning. Therefore, Metro Council is not part of the approval process of this proposed new subdivision. However, our office will do our best to make interested residents aware of the process as it unfolds, and meetings where the public can participate and express their thoughts, concerns, and/or ideas about the project.  In the photo above, Bob Marrett and Kelly Young described the plan at the meeting.

The informal meeting allowed attendees to review the plan and discuss the proposal before an application can be filed with the Louisville Metro Department of Planning and Design Services.  Neighbors were able to have their concerns about trees, traffic and drainage addressed by the property owner and developer.  In the photo at right, left to right, were Councilman Mulvihill, Alan Goldring, Will West and Lisa Shapiro.

Facility tour at Coca-Cola Consolidated Louisville

Councilman Mulvihill and his daughter Katie toured the new facility with other Metro Council Members and Coca-Cola Consolidated Louisville leaders. 

A group of Metro Council members toured the new Coca-Cola Consolidated facility on Global Drive Tuesday evening. During the tour, the visitors got to see vintage Coca-Cola vending machines, like the ones shown to the left, as well as the latest vending machines.  The group also learned more about operations and community commitments at Coca-Cola Consolidated Louisville.

November 23 - Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center's annual Christmas Bazaar and Open House

The Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center will host their annual Christmas Bazaar and Open House on November 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center at 1016 E. December 7 - Tree planting in Schnitzelburg and Meriwether

The Schnitzelburg and Meriwether neighborhoods will be participating in a tree planting with Louisville Grows December 7. This will be the third planting for Schnitzelburg and the first for Meriwether. In addition to large trees, emphasis will be on right of way trees for Shelby Street and Burnett Avenue.  Register here.

PVA Homestead Exemption available to some property owners over 65

The Louisville PVA offers a homestead exemption for property owners 65 years of age or older who own and occupy the property as their primary residence on January 1 of the year in which they apply for the exemption. The homestead exemption for 2019-2020 is $39,300. If you are eligible to receive the exemption, the year’s exemption amount is subtracted from your property’s assessed value, reducing your property tax liability. Only one exemption (Homestead or Disability) is allowed per household. Once approved for the Homestead Exemption, you are not required to reapply annually. You are eligible for the Homestead Exemption on residential or commercial property as long as you own and occupy the property as your primary residence and meet all other qualifying criteria. If you move, it is your responsibility to notify the PVA Office and reapply for the exemption on your new residence. For more information and to apply online, please click here.

LIHEAP registration continues for eligible residents 

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded, income-based program that provides financial help to low-income households in meeting the costs of heating their home. The LIHEAP Subsidy Component is a one-time assistance benefit, which is paid directly to the heating vendor. The LIHEAP Subsidy Component will operate through December 13. Residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. The appointment system is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Schedule an appointment by phone at 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.  Applicants must be Louisville Metro/Jefferson County residents with a household income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. For the Subsidy Component of LIHEAP, residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills. Individuals who are unable to apply for this program in person may send a representative on their behalf with a note including the applicant’s signature and phone number. Residents who are homebound and who are unable to send a representative may call 780-7937. Snicker Doodle is a sweet cat who’s looking for a home in time for the holidays. The approximately three-year-old Tabby with the big green eyes is a friendly, laid back cat whose adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Snicker Doodle weighs about ten pounds. He’s already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Gloria is a gorgeous green-eyed girl who’s waiting to fall in love with the perfect family. The approximately three-year-old Pit Bull is a happy, playful dog with plenty of silly moments to keep you laughing. She’s also a great sidekick who can travel with you. Gloria did great on a recent field trip to Cherokee Park. She was good in the car and she’s easy to leash walk. Gloria also loves giving and receiving affection and does well with older children. Gloria’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. She weighs about 50 pounds and she’s already spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. Gloria can be tested with kids or other dogs but she needs a home with no cats.  Leaf drop-off sites open

Got leaves? Don’t blow them into the street. While some cities collect loose leaves curbside for residents, Louisville does not.  Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or using yard waste collection will have the option to dispose of them at one of three drop-off sites through November 30. Drop-off will not be available on November 28 and 29 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents. Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see. Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

Councilman Mulvihill is committed to providing carts to District 10 residents at a reduced cost. These recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted.  The photos at left show the sizes: 64 gallon on the left, 95 gallon on the right.

The carts normally cost $53, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.  If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911)

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
