Monday is Veterans Day. Please take a moment to thank someone you know who served. Countless servicemen and women have helped protect the freedoms we all enjoy as Americans both at home and abroad. Their service should inspire all of us to do our best each day and make them proud. If you are interested in learning more about the ways our community has helped support America in times of conflict, particularly during World War I, there is a great opportunity coming up on November 13th. Louisville Parks and Recreation is putting together a memorial to the role of Camp Zachary Taylor. They are asking for your input. The first public meeting to help design that memorial will take place at 6pm at the Allgeier Community Center.
A month from now, we will have our next Town Hall meeting. This is an opportunity for you to share your concerns directly with those who make decisions in our District and our neighborhoods. We will have representatives, if not the directors, of various departments and city agencies including Public Works, LMPD, MSD and many others. Please make plans to attend if you have concerns to share or want to hear an update about what's going on in our community.
Our Fall Town Hall will take place Dec. 7th from 9:30am - 11:30am at St. John Paul II Church on Hikes Lane. We will send reminders about this event, but please share with your friends and neighbors. We look forward to seeing you there.

TreesLouisville is a nonprofit organization focused on restoring urban tree canopy in Louisville. They are partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide 1,500 free trees to Louisville residents.
Louisville loses around 54,000 trees annually and this is one way we can help restore our depleted canopy.
To participate go to arborday.org/treeslouisville, type in your address, and choose your tree! Trees will either be shipped to your home or you can pick up a larger tree at one of our two events.
- Pickup event is scheduled for November 9, 10am-2pm at Americana Community Center 4801 Southside Dr, Louisville, KY 40214.
This is the second of four seasonal Community Canopy programs. Last winter 870 free trees were delivered to residents of Louisville and the goal is to provide more than 3,500 free trees over the next two years.
The following species are available: American Sycamore, Black Tupelo, Serviceberry, Redbud, Kentucky Coffeetree, Overcup Oak, Shadblow Serviceberry, Swamp White Oak, Sweetbay Magnolia, and Tulip Poplar.

There are a variety of Week of Valor events through November 13, including the 9th Annual Veterans Day Parade on Monday, November 11, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. Louisville Parks and Recreation is in the process of developing a vision plan for a World War I memorial in Joe Creason Park honoring Camp Zachary Taylor’s contribution to the United States’ efforts in the Great War. The first public workshop will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 13 at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center, 4101 Cadillac Court. The public is invited to attend, offer input and ask questions.
About the Project
The current phase of the World War I Memorial project is to develop a vision plan. This plan will include a preferred concept for the memorial and other features, such as exhibit and gathering space. The plan will also identify stories to be shared in the memorials. The vision plan will assist Louisville Parks and Recreation in acquiring additional funding and support for final design and construction of the memorial.
How to participate
The vision planning process will involve two public workshops. The next one has yet to be scheduled but is anticipated for winter or spring 2020. You may also submit comments and feedback by e-mailing Louisville Parks and Recreation at parks@louisvilleky.gov.

The Friends of the St. Matthews Library are hosting a book sale on Friday, November 15 – Sunday, November 17 at the St. Matthews branch, 3940 Grandview Avenue, in the small conference room. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that helps low income residents of Jefferson County with their utility bills begins on Monday, Nov. 4, 2019.
LIHEAP is a federally funded, income-based program that provides financial help to low-income households in meeting the costs of heating their home. The LIHEAP Subsidy Component is a one-time assistance benefit, which is paid directly to the heating vendor. The LIHEAP Subsidy Component begins Monday, Nov. 4, and will operate through Dec. 13, 2019.

Kentucky Law and the Jefferson County PVA offers a homestead exemption for property owners 65 years of age or older who own and occupy the property as their primary residence on January 1 of the year in which they apply for the exemption. The homestead exemption for 2019-2020 is $39,300. If you are eligible to receive the exemption, the year’s exemption amount is subtracted from your property’s assessed value, reducing your property tax liability.
Only one exemption (Homestead or Disability) is allowed per household. Once approved for the Homestead Exemption, you are not required to reapply annually. You are eligible for the Homestead Exemption on residential or commercial property as long as you own and occupy the property as your primary residence and meet all other qualifying criteria. If you move, it is your responsibility to notify the PVA Office and reapply for the exemption on your new residence.

It's not the best piece of mail you've ever received, but please keep an eye out for annual property tax letters. Law allows those unpaid bills to be sold next July. If you don't pay and the bill is sold, it not only gets to be much more expensive, but can be a major headache. There are resources for those who cannot pay. Please check those out and help family members make sure they don't get caught in a property tax nightmare themselves.

Essential functions are escorting children across streets and highways before and after school hours; directing traffic at street intersections near school drive entrances to assist buses arriving and departing; and directing the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or using curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at one of three drop-off sites beginning November 5.
Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service November 5 through November 30. Drop-off will not be available on November 28 and 29 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.
