Halloween in Brown Park – October 26

Halloween in Brown Park

For well over 20 years, the Chamber of St. Matthews and City of St. Matthews have brought together thousands of residents, dozens of organizations, and countless area businesses in a fun-filled family friendly, safe, Halloween event. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Enjoy trick-or-treating stations throughout Brown Park’s trail, bounce houses, hayrides, and games and crafts. This event is always a great way to get into the Halloween spirit.

St. Matthews’ Brown Park, located on Kresge Way right next to Baptist Hospital East, is an easy access park. The trail for Trick-or-Treating runs into the woods on the shorter path, shy of one (1) mile, while the hayride runs on the outside longer path, weather permitting.

In an effort to be as inclusive as possible, the organizers have encouraged every one of the vendors to not only provide sweet eats, but also be a Teal Pumpkin Project participant. This project is designed to offer non-food treats for trick-or-treaters who may suffer from a food allergy. All those participating in the project will have a Teal Pumpkin displayed in their booth in some fashion.

Parking for the event will be at 4007 Kresge Way, a part of the Baptist Health Louisville Campus directly across from the hospital.

Know Waste: Caps and Lids – on or off?

SWMS caps

Message from Solid Waste Management Services (SWMS)

Residents often wonder whether or not lids should be attached to containers when recycling. The answer to this depends on what they're made of:

Plastic Containers: Lids on! If possible, squeeze the air out of the container and attach the lid before recycling.

Glass Containers: Lids off! It's helpful to keep the different material types separate. You can recycle metal lids and glass containers separately.

Paper Cartons: Lids off! Yes, there is a plastic spout on most paper cartons these days - you don't have to remove that. It will get removed during the pulping process at the paper mills. But you might as well help out the process by removing and discarding the plastic cap. This cap is small and will likely fall through the machinery at the facility where all the material is sorted. Save for repurposing or recycle through a special collection of plastic caps only (some schools collect and have a bench made). Otherwise, you can discard in the trash.

Photo of "leftovers" on the floor of the recycling facility. Small items may not make it through the recovery process because they easily fall through the sorting screens and machinery.
