Golf Courses, Contracts & Road Improvements
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It has been almost a month since my last newsletter address since we canceled the full Metro Council meeting at the end of September. We did that so Metro Council members could build a stronger relationship with the Kentucky League of Cities at their annual meeting. This is the statewide group that represents all 400 plus cities across our Commonwealth. Louisville has representation through the Mayor’s office, but the Metro Council members believe we also need to foster that relationship to further our agenda and ideas in Frankfort. This was one of many steps we are taking to strengthen that relationship.
We did pass a few ordinances this past week. The one that had the most media coverage was the ordinance related to our public golf courses. It passed with only one vote against, so it had significant bi-partisan support. These basic reforms include increases in the standard golf fees, it gives the ability to adjust pricing based on market conditions, and it allows us to reduce costs during off peak times like the winter. These are very common-sense reforms we should have enacted a decade ago. The conservative estimates have this saving over a million dollars a year and should have the golf courses at least budget neutral and potentially budget positive. This reform gives our courses the basic tools to operate sustainably so taxpayers aren’t on the hook. This is another step of many that Metro Council is leading on to adjust the budget toward long-term fiscal sustainability while maintaining necessary services and without over-burdening taxpayers with sudden, large tax increases.
