Dinner with Cops at Dollar General Market

Yesterday evening The Dollar General Market at 3430 Taylor Blvd bought our platoons dinner! Free Qdoba for all working inside the market! In the last year they have lost over 500,000 from thefts and Chris Fulkerson, the store manager reached out for more officer presence. It was a great turnout, meeting their team and community members. And on top of the dinner, officers get free beverages while working. 

Thank you all who came out to support the 4th division! 

Louisville Visual Arts Homecoming!

The First-Ever Homecoming for Louisville Visual Art's Education Programs on October 20th will Feature Music by Ben Sollee, Fun with Squallis Puppeteers, and a Car Trunk Art Show - as Well as Honored Alumni Guests Ed Hamilton, Gordon Brown, & LaNia Roberts

In 1925, LVA initiated the first visual art education program for young people in Louisville - Children's Free Art Classes, or CFAC. In this, the 94^th year of CFAC, LVA will provide exceptional art education to more than 2,711 students from over 157 different schools as it continues to nurture rising generations of creative thinkers and leaders.

On October 20th, from 2pm-4pm at our Portland Hub (1538 Lytle Street), we will host our first-ever Homecoming for all current or former participants in any of LVA's many education programs, including CFAC, the Academy of LVA, The Future is Now, Studio 2000, Picture Love, Summer Art Camps, and others. If you or someone you know took at class at the Watertower or remembers their artwork being displayed there, it's almost certain you or they are LVA education alums. 

Ben Sollee will start the festivities with his incomparable musical stylings at 2pm.  Squallis Puppets will mingle with guests as they enjoy a Car Trunk Art show/sale and the chance to share their own LVA stories.  Comfy Cow Ice Cream and food from the Table Restaurant will provide refreshment.

In addition, Homecoming guests will hear from distinguished CFAC Alumni Ed Hamilton, Gordon Brown, and LaNia Roberts.

West Nile Mosquitoes Found in Louisville

The Department of Public Health and Wellness has found West Nile infected mosquitoes in surveillance traps in one Louisville ZIP Code area, 40215. 

“While West Nile positive mosquitoes are not unusual for this time of year, this indicates that West Nile infected mosquitoes are now present throughout our community,” said Dr. Sarah Moyer, director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness.  “We advise everyone to take the appropriate precautions no matter what ZIP Code you live in.  You should wear insect repellant if you go outside during dusk or dawn and should remove standing water around your home.”   

The Department of Public Health and Wellness advises people to take the following precautions:

Avoid Mosquito Bites

• Use insect repellents when you go outdoors. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection. To optimize safety and effectiveness, repellents should be used according to the label instructions. More information about insect repellents can be found here athttp://www.cdc.gov/westnile/faq/repellent.html.
• When weather permits, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give extra protection. Don't apply repellents containing permethrin directly to skin. Do not spray repellent on the skin under your clothing.
• Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing from dusk to dawn or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.

Mosquito-Proof Your Home

• Install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes outside. Use your air conditioning, if you have it.
• Help reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires and birdbaths on a regular basis.

No human cases of West Nile have been reported in Louisville so far this year.  Last year there were four human cases and no deaths. In 2017 there was one non-fatal human case. In 2016 there were two human cases and one death.  In 2015, there were three human cases with no deaths. 

In most instances, people infected with West Nile virus either show no symptoms or relatively mild symptoms.  However, less than one percent of infected people develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis.  Serious illness can occur in people of any age. However, people over 60 years of age are at the greatest risk for severe disease. People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and people who have received organ transplants, are also at greater risk for serious illness.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has operated a mosquito control program for more than 60 years. The department does surveillance of mosquito populations with traps strategically located throughout the community, and tests mosquitos for such diseases as West Nile, La Crosse, Eastern Equine and St. Louis Encephalitis. 

In the spring the department pre-treats potential mosquito breeding sites with larvicide to prevent hatch offs.  In the summer it treats catch basins and performs mosquito fogging in response to West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.

Please be advised that the Southwest Driver’s License Branch is moving to a new location in the Dixie Plaza.

Beginning Saturday, Oct. 26, the current Southwest branch (4917 Dixie Highway, Suite E, 40216) will close due to construction and relocation.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the new Southwest branch (4919 Dixie Highway, Suite A, 40216) will reopen.

In addition, the West Louisville Branch (2900 West Broadway in the Nia Center, 40211) will be open for Saturday hours on Oct. 26, Nov. 2 and Nov. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

2019 End Epilepsy Statewide Conference

Are you living with epilepsy or a caregiver to a person living with epilepsy or seizure disorder? Would you like to learn more about this neurological condition? If so, we hope you and your family will join us for the 2019 annual statewide conference, End Epilepsy. This FREE program will kick off November as National Epilepsy Awareness Month and is designed for children and adults affected by epilepsy and their families. 
 
The 2019 End Epilepsy conference is for individuals school age and up. The program will feature a full day of educational sessions presented by experts in the field of epilepsy. These sessions are designed to help you understand more about living with seizures and how to better cope with this neurological condition.  Please note that if there are concurring sessions that you would like to attend, Foundation staff would like to encourage you to bring someone with you so each of you can go to a different session and then share what you learned.
 
A separate program for school age children will also be featured. This program provides children the opportunity to get meet other kids affected by epilepsy. The children’s program will include fun activities such as an art therapy session, discussion about epilepsy/seizures, games, and more.

Free paper shredding and drug toss event

Kentucky Exposition Center (Lot W) 1030 Phillips Lane Saturday, November 2, 2019 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Louisville residents are invited to bring unneeded documents to be shredded and prescription drugs to be disposed of at a FREE event on November 2, 2019. The paper shredding and drug toss event is a joint operation of Louisville Metro Public Works and Louisville Metro Police. Businesses may not participate in this event. All paper materials will be shredded on site and recycled. Shredding services are donated by the Louisville Branch of Shred-It Louisville.

The drug toss is a drive-through event. In advance, black out all personal information on all medication containers that will be tossed. For safety reasons, sharp items, needles, lances, cosmetics, personal care or hygiene items cannot be accepted. Medication products should never be flushed down the toilet or drain, burned in the open or thrown in the trash because they can contaminate the environment if exposed to drinking and ground water.

Our Solid Waste Services Division offers an array of services beyond weekly collection of trash, recycling and yard waste.

Recycle Coach Our Recycle Coach smartphone app and website offers users personalized calendars and reminders of waste collection services and events. It also answers questions about how to dispose of various items such as hazardous waste, batteries and more.

Waste Reduction Center Drop off up to three large household items or recycle electronics for free at the Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue. It's open Tues-Fri 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Haz Bin Our household hazardous materials drop off location, Haz Bin, is at 7501 Grade Lane. From asbestos to varnishes and wood preservatives, we'll take it Tues-Sat. 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Drop off Recycling We have fourteen self-service drop off locations around the city for nonhazardous recyclable materials. Just put flattened cardboard and paper along with, glass, metal and plastic containers in the dumpster and close the door. We also have three full-service locations that accept those same items along with used cooking oil, motor oil and filters, antifreeze, and latex paint (seasonally).

Kentucky Shakespeare brings two-actor Hamlet to ten library locations

The Louisville Free Public Library and Kentucky Shakespeare are once again partnering to bring free, family-friendly two-actor performances of Shakespeare classics to the Library. This year, two actors will bring Shakespeare’s most famous play to life, as Hamlet uncovers a web of deceit and corruption in his quest to avenge his father’s death. The audience will engage with profes­sional actors from Kentucky Shakespeare in this fast-paced, one-hour production that highlights self-worth, relationship dynamics, the consequences of acting on vengeance, and finding help in times of isolation and vulnerability. This live performance will tour ten LFPL locations in November and December.

The tour, made possible through a grant from Metro Louisville, kicks off on Saturday, November 2 at the St. Matthews Library (2 p.m.). Ages six and up are welcome. The full schedule of performances is listed below and is also available at LFPL.org/KyShakespeare. #LFPLShakespeare

First Division

Major Andy McClinton Andrew McClinton began his career in law enforcement on January 22, 2001 with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD). As a patrol officer, he served in the former Sixth District (LPD) and First Division. As a detective, he served in the First Division Flex Platoon and in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. He was also a member of the Dignitary Protection Team for three (3) years. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2008, he served in the First Division, Robbery Unit, Professional Standards Unit and the Public Integrity Unit. In 2016, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in the Third Division and Administrative Services.  In 2017, McClinton was promoted to Major and commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major McClinton holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science from Hanover College. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision at Eastern Kentucky University and the 136th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. Major McClinton is married with two (2) children.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Tim Burkett Major Tim Burkett began his career with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD) in 1999 . He was a patrol officer and division detective in the former Fourth District. Additionally, he was a Sex Crimes detective and served on the Dignitary Protection Team (DPT). In 2007, Burkett was promoted to sergeant where he was a patrol sergeant and a division detective sergeant in the Eighth Division. In 2010, Burkett was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the Property Room. He also served as a Special Events lieutenant in the Special Operations Division. While in the Special Events Unit, he was responsible for planning and operating medium to large scale special events. He has been part of the command group for the PGA Championship, the Ironman Triathlon, Thunder over Louisville, the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Convention and many other events. He has been the lead on numerous events including marathons, parades, Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service and the world renowned Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. After being promoted to major, Burkett commanded the Special Operations Division Major Burkett holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a cognate in Public Administration. He was a Dean's Scholar graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course. He is a certified instructor with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training

Louisville Metro Animal Services Announces New Shelter

Metro Animal Services announces  the opening of a new, state-of-the-art Animal Care Facility at 3516 Newburg Road on Monday, October 21,  2019. The facility will replace the outdated Manslick Road facility and put all animal-related services on one campus where you can: adopt a pet, purchase or renew a pet license, or take a stray pet. The 33-thousand square foot facility can house 235 animals. A modern veterinary wing includes the shelter’s first X-ray and Ultrasound machines. There’s also behavioral, enrichment and grooming rooms which the old facility lacked. A better future for shelter pets begins with a better LMAS. Pets of the Week

Cat of the Week: Shy Kira is finished nursing her kittens and has left foster to find a permanent home. The gorgeous gray cat is approximately 1-years-old and weighs about 7lbs. Kira likes to hide in small spaces until she’s feeling brave and safe enough to explore her new surroundings. A fur sibling to keep her company would be nice but she’s ok being the only cat in her home. Kira’s adoption fee is waived thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Dog of the Week: It didn’t take long for Bo Jangles to make  himself at staff favorite at the LMAS Shelter. The 6-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier has a friendly, laidback personality and he’s very well-behaved. Bo Jangles can easily follow hand cues and knows a lot of commands. He loves to fetch tennis balls but doesn’t mind entertaining himself in the backyard when you’re busy. Bo Jangles also gets along with other dogs!
