Q&A with Sharon:
· What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
- I like puttering around in the garden or sitting on the screened in porch with the cats and a good book. I also like hiking and I am a very poor cellist.
· How would your family and friends describe you?
- I asked my husband how to answer this and he said, “Practically perfect in every way.” (Not really. He said: “Cranky.”)
· What are the values that drive you?
- I try to always be ethical and kind. Kindness is harder.
· What has been your career progression?
- A long time ago I worked as a Courtroom Clerk in Maricopa County, Arizona. Using what I learned there, I became a business analyst for a software company. That was a great job solving challenging problems, and I got to work with clients all over the world. When I decided to leave business analysis, I heard about a spot at the Lexington City Council. That job was super fun for the variety, the opportunity to use my software skills to solve office problems, and a friendly work environment. We moved to Crescent Hill about two years ago because my husband is on the software team at Papa John’s. It eventually made sense for me to work in Louisville as well so that’s how I came to work for the Clerk!
· Where would you like to go on vacation if you had a month off and money was no object?
- I would love to visit Australia again, but tour the whole country. If I only had a month, I’d rent a car and drive the coast from Cairns (Great Barrier Reef!) to Melbourne, then the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide, and afterwards fly to Perth. I’d stay at small hotels or B&Bs and tell myself over and over, Stay LEFT, Stay LEFT, Stay LEFT!
· Tell us about your family, kids, hobbies.
- My husband is a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan.
· Where did you grow up? Where else have you lived?
- I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona but I came to Kentucky for work in 1996 and here I have stayed.
 Q&A with Shay:
• What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? I enjoy walks in the parks, spending time with my family and friends and serving at my church.
• How would your family and friends describe you? My family would describe me as: fun, loving, encouraging, considerate, kind and compassionate.
• Tell us about your family, kids, hobbies. I am a wife, mother and grandmother with a new grand on the way.
• Where would you like to go on vacation if you had a month off and money was no object? If money was no object, I would love to tour Africa for a month.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.
There are about 1.38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer each year (IARC Globocan, 2008). Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the incidence has been rising up steadily in the last years due to increase in life expectancy, increase urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles.
Currently there is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases, palliative care to relief the suffering of patients and their families is needed.
Council President James, Council Members Fowler, Sexton-Smith, McCraney, Dorsey, Mulvihill and Peden attended the Rendezvous Voyageur Celebration. In addition to the Festival, the LaSalle Town Leadership hosted a Canadian BBQ, arranged a tour, tasting and lunch at Hiram Walker Distillery (where we found another connection between our two cities, the stills were made here in Louisville, see picture), and invited them to a 17th Century Traditional French/First Nations Soiree. These are just the highlights from the trip, our newest Friendship City truly rolled out the red carpet for our Council Members!
Councilwoman Dorsey would like to invite you all to attended this empowering event! Please feel free to share the above flyer in your district newsletter or share with anyone who may be interested in attending.
Councilwoman Fowler would like to invite you all to attend the Southwest Community Festival on October 12th, 2019. Please feel free to add the above flyers to your district newsletter.
