The Big Table: World’s Largest Potluck - September 15th

the big table

The Big Table, a welcoming event aimed at bringing people together to share food and conversation, is returning to Iroquois Park on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 5-7 p.m. Last year, more than 1,500 people participated in the event, and organizers this year will be setting up for 2,000 attendees.

The third annual event is hosted by The Big Table, with major support from the Global Human Project and the Louisville Metro Office for Globalization. Each participant is asked to bring a dish, fruit, dessert or non-alcoholic drink to share with at least eight people. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish that reflects something about them, has a family story or personal significance, along with a recipe card. Tables, chairs, eating utensils and plates will be provided by event sponsors, but in case of an extra-large turnout, organizers encourage participants to bring a blanket and extra utensils.

Organizers are again hoping to break a world record, but this year’s event is most focused on encouraging conversation and meeting new people. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest potluck was attended by 3,264 people in India.

In an effort to foster more intimate conversation and depth of connection, participants will be organized into tables of eight. Table Host volunteers will help seat participants and work to ensure tables are made up of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Table Hosts will also facilitate conversation and storytelling during the event. Approximately 250 Table Host volunteers are needed for this event.

New this year, residents who play an instrument are invited to bring their instrument and join in a post-dinner global music jam. Pick-up music venues will be arranged along the event area to continue facilitating connections during event cleanup.

In case of inclement weather, organizers will announce a cancellation of the event by 1 p.m. on Sept. 15 on social media and the event registration page.

Registration is strongly encouraged. For more information and event registration, visit www.thebigtable502.com.

Love Sings Louder @ Iroquois Amphitheatre - September 15

love sings louder

The Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Center have been inspired by the currently popular “mass singing initiatives” facilitated by groups like Israel’s Koolulam and Canada’s Choir!Choir!Choir!. These events bring together a diverse range of community members with the idea to stop everything for a few hours and just sing together.

In partnership with a diverse group of community leaders, groups and organizations, the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Center will bring this experience to the Louisville community, enabling participants to enjoy the feeling of togetherness through a deep communal experience – their sounds and voices coming together to create a social choir, full of hope and optimism.

Dixie Highway Access Study Survey

new dixie

The Dixie Highway Access Study is looking at the need for sidewalks, shared use paths, and bike lanes on Crums Lane, Rockford Lane, Gagel Avenue, and Valley Station and the neighborhoods around them.  The goal is to make it easier for people to safely walk and bike on these streets and to reach Dixie Highway and the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. We need your input to help identify what improvements are needed and what should be built first.

FREE Trees Provided by Trees Louisville in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation

trees louisville

TreesLouisville is a nonprofit organization focused on restoring urban tree canopy in Louisville.  They are partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide 1500 free trees to Louisville residents.

Louisville loses around 54,000 trees annually and this is one way we can help restore our depleted canopy.

To participate go to arborday.org/treeslouisville, type in your address, and choose your tree! Trees will either be shipped to your home or you can pick up a larger tree at one of our two events.

  • Pickup events are scheduled for October 20, 12pm-4pm at Against the Grain Brewery, 401 E Main St, Louisville, KY 40202 or November 9, 10am-2pm at Americana Community Center 4801 Southside Dr, Louisville, KY 40214.

This is the second of four seasonal Community Canopy programs.  Last winter 870 free trees were delivered to residents of Louisville and the goal is to provide more than 3,500 free trees over the next two years.

The following species are available: American Sycamore, Black Tupelo, Serviceberry, Redbud, Kentucky Coffeetree, Overcup Oak, Shadblow Serviceberry, Swamp White Oak, Sweetbay Magnolia, and Tulip Poplar.
