Dear Neighbor,

We've heard from many neighbors about the lack of garbage pickup in the Urban Services District on Labor Day. While this was a decision taken by the administration - although they will be the first to tell you it was the Council's fault, if they take your call or comments at all - I would like to apologize to directly to anyone who was caught unaware by this new policy, and particularly to those who were told by the Mayor's office that they are not taking comments on this policy. Your government should always give you - the citizen taxpayer - an opportunity to communicate with your elected officials and be heard.

But, we also know that an apology does very little to lessen the bite for anyone who expected a city service to be there, and found themselves left holding the bag. So, our office is exploring the possibility of filling the gap, if we can. More information on that project will be forthcoming.

Not to beat a dead horse, but as many of you know the role of the Council is to appropriate money in the budget and the role of the Mayor is to execute and spend that money as they see fit. Council does not choose on which days of the week or how often your garbage, yard waste, or recycling is picked up in the same way we don't decide who to hire to do that work or exactly how much to pay them for the job. That is all the prerogative of the executive.

We will listen to your concerns, forward them to the appropriate place, and are working on a solution despite the administration, but the buck stops in the Mayor's office on this one.

In other news, please join us for the 25th Anniversary of the Bon Air Library Garden on Sept. 16th from 6-7 p.m. (at the Bon Air Library), sponsored by the wonderful folks at the Friends of the Library. This event is free and there will be light refreshments. All are welcome.

Thanks, and have a wonderful weekend,

Check out drop-off recycling centers

If you do not have residential curbside recycling service or if you have too much for your bin/cart, we have free recycling drop-off locations around the county for your convenience. Some are staffed by Public Works employees to help with drop-off. Others are self-serve. Here's an interactive map of the drop-off locations.

Location change! Trevilian Way Recycling
Drop-Off Moving

On Tuesday, September 3 the recycling dumpster located at Metro Parks Maintenance, 1297 Trevilian Way will be permanently moved to the Cyril Allgeier Community Center parking lot, 4107 Cadillac Court. Accepted items remain the same: paper, flattened cardboard, and containers made of plastic, metal or glass. Items should be loose, not in bags.

What you can drop off:

Self-service and full-service locations

  • Flattened cardboard
  • Paper containers and cups
  • Milk, juice and soup cartons
  • Newspapers/inserts, phone books, magazines, junk mail, office paper
  • Plastic bottles, cups, and containers
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Metal bottles and cans

Full-service locations also accept:

  • Used motor oil and filters
  • Used anti-freeze
  • Used cooking oil

Do’s and don’ts

  • Recyclable items at self-service locations may be mixed.
  • They should be loose in the dumpster, not in bags.
  • Items at full-service locations must be separated by material. Staff members will help unload.
  • No dumping. Take up to three large items to the Waste Reduction Center free of charge.
  • No liquids/paints/oils/etc. in the Self-Service dumpsters.
  • Flatten cardboard to save space in the dumpster.

If the dumpster is full, contact Metro311. The crews empty them on a schedule based on how long it typically takes to fill, but sometimes they get full sooner than expected.
