Louisville Urban League Groundbreaking

.

The city and the Louisville Urban League broke ground on a multimillion-dollar sports and learning complex Tuesday, and raised a lot of money for it in the process.

The project will cost upwards of $35 million and will be located on West Muhammad Ali Boulevard in the Russell neighborhood.

The 4,000-seat facility will be anchored by an indoor track equipped to host track and field competitions.

Officials are hoping the project brings housing, jobs and investments to west Louisville.

“I see people coming from all over the country to say, ‘What have they done in the west end of Louisville, Kentucky?’ That’s what I see when I look at this project,” Mayor Greg Fischer said.

The groundbreaking happened 1 p.m. and quickly turned into a fundraising event of sorts. Nearly 200 people pledged money to buy one of the thousands of seats in the complex.

Then, two donors offered to match that money up to $100,000. That brought Tuesday’s grand total donation to around $285,000.
