September 13 and 14 - Oktoberfest at the German-American Club

September 13 and 14 is Oktoberfest at the German-American Club at 1840 Lincoln Avenue in District 10. This is the club's most popular two-day event, so mark your calendars -- you don't want to miss it! Each day features live music from two bands, dancing, and plenty of German food and Gemütlichkeit! Vendors will be on site with various German and German Style goods, and there's a playground for the kiddos! Both nights the festivities are from 4 p.m. to midnight, with the Rheingold Band performing from 4 to 8 p.m. and the Prost Band from 8 p.m. to midnight. Food is served both nights from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Admission is a $5 special membership that lasts through the end of the year. Free additional parking is available at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center at 4101 Cadillac Court.

September 14 - Chat with Pat 

Councilman Mulvihill's next Chat with Pat is scheduled for Saturday, September 14 at 8:30 a.m. at the Bean Coffee shop at 1138 Goss Avenue. We’ll plan to meet in the back room. Please drop by and have a coffee and talk about issues in the neighborhood.

September 14 - Camp Taylor Neighborhood Reunion

This year's annual reunion for past and current residents of the Camp Taylor neighborhood will be at the Louisville Nature Center, 3745 Illinois Avenue, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 14.  All are welcome to come and share memories of life in the Camp. Save the date - October 13 for first ever Bike for VIPS in the Parklands

District 10 neighbor VIPS, Visually Impaired Preschool Services, will have an inaugural Bike for VIPS in the Parklands on Sunday, October 13 at 9 a.m.  From VIPS: We have experienced tremendous growth and increased the number of children we have served by 15 percent annually each year for the past four years. Our most critical need is early in-home intervention services, but VIPS also offers the ONLY preschool in Kentucky or Indiana designed with the unique needs of children with blindness prior to age 5. This fundraiser will be key: while demand for VIPS is high, funding from historically supportive agencies has declined. Information on Election Day - November 5

Election Day is Tuesday, November 5, and the last day to register or change your voting information is Monday, October 7 by 4 p.m.  Need a ride to polls on Election Day? A. Philip Randolph Institute (774-4834) provides free rides. Lyft and Uber may be giving reduced rides to the polls, or call your local party headquarters. If you become sick or are in the hospital, you can still vote with an Emergency Medical Ballot. Request a paper absentee ballot between Tuesday, October 22 and Tuesday, November 5. Call your local Board of Election office to get an Emergency Medical Ballot. You will have to find someone to notarize your application for a ballot and then take that application to the Board of Elections to get your ballot. August 30 to September 1 - Newburg Days Festival

The people of Newburg are getting ready to once again host their own special homecoming of welcoming back old friends and celebrate the unity and pride of one of Metro Louisville’s well-established neighborhoods.

“Newburg is ready to celebrate the things that make it a very special community. We like to think of the weekend as part of an old fashioned family get together that is filled with events of fun and music,” Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin said. “It is a time to welcome back old friends who have moved on to other areas and at the same time it gives all of us a chance to catch up on what’s going on in our neighborhood.”

“Newburg Days” kicks off on Friday with rides and music in Petersburg/Newburg Park.

Saturday, there is a Community Breakfast in Petersburg Park, and the community parade that starts at noon. This year, there will be a basketball tournament and Seniors Activity Tent.       

On Sunday, a community worship service and gospel festival will highlight the last day of the event.

August 30 to September 2 - Worldfest

Food, crafts & entertainment from all over the world right here in downtown Louisville!

WorldFest, one of the region’s largest international festivals, celebrates its 17th anniversary with four days of expanded world food, music, dance, culture and education this Labor Day weekend. 

"Cities that embrace and encourage their international citizens and cultures will thrive, have a stronger quality of life and will attract new growth and jobs,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. 'WorldFest is a great event for exploring and celebrating Louisville’s many faces and cultures and we always look to make it more vibrant, diverse and educational. So, it’s exciting to add many new features and attractions for the 17th Annual WorldFest.” 

With over 100 languages spoken in the Louisville public schools and 35 percent of the city’s population growth over the past 17 years coming from international residents from over 150 different countries throughout the world, Louisville is more culturally diverse than ever before.

WorldFest runs through Labor Day weekend. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. except Monday, which runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the Belvedere, at Fifth and Main Streets. Admission is free with international food, spirits, beer and crafts available for purchase.

September 2 - Mayor's Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle 

The Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle is a twice annual event held every Memorial & Labor Day. Thousands of participants flock to Waterfront Park to enjoy a morning full of fun. Bring the entire family for this free, healthy community event. Various fitness demonstrations start the day including yoga, tai chi and zumba. There are numerous vendor booths available for information and giveaways. After all of that, take your pick from a 5k hike, 13.5-plus-mile bike ride or a paddle on the Ohio River. This event is not a race. It is open to participants of all levels and we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the festivities!   Free t-shirt while supplies last. Go Green! Sunday, September 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Iroquois Amphitheatre, enjoy a free, community-wide, multi-faith, multi-cultural, intergenerational program: Love Sings Louder.  The Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Center has been inspired by the currently popular “mass singing initiatives” facilitated by groups like Israel’s Koolulam and Canada’s Choir!Choir!Choir!. These events bring together a diverse range of community members with the idea to stop everything for a few hours and just sing together. In partnership with a diverse group of community leaders, groups and organizations, the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Center will bring this experience to the Louisville community, enabling participants to enjoy the feeling of togetherness through a deep communal experience – their sounds and voices coming together to create a social choir, full of hope and optimism.

The Big Table: World’s Largest Potluck returns to Iroquois Park September 15 to celebrate city’s diversity

The Big Table, a welcoming event aimed at bringing people together to share food and conversation, is returning to Iroquois Park on Sunday, September 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. Last year, more than 1,500 people participated in the event, and organizers this year will be setting up for 2,000 attendees.  

The third annual event is hosted by The Big Table, with major support from the Global Human Project and the Louisville Metro Office for Globalization. Each participant is asked to bring a dish, fruit, dessert or non-alcoholic drink to share with at least eight people. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish that reflects something about them, has a family story or personal significance, along with a recipe card. Tables, chairs, eating utensils and plates will be provided by event sponsors, but in case of an extra-large turnout, organizers encourage participants to bring a blanket and extra utensils.

In an effort to foster more intimate conversation and depth of connection, participants will be organized into tables of eight. Table Host volunteers will help seat participants and work to ensure tables are made up of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Table Hosts will also facilitate conversation and storytelling during the event. Approximately 250 Table Host volunteers are needed for this event.

New this year, residents who play an instrument are invited to bring their instrument and join in a post-dinner global music jam. Pick-up music venues will be arranged along the event area to continue facilitating connections during event cleanup.

In case of inclement weather, organizers will announce a cancellation of the event by 1 p.m. on Sept. 15 on social media and the event registration page.

September 16: Next Clearing the Air Workshop

The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District's next “Clearing The Air” seminar is August 18. “Clearing The Air” gives the public an inside look at the APCD, everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful emissions. One goal of “Clearing The Air” is to give the community a place to voice their concerns about air quality.

September 21 - Next Neighborhood Bike-In at Victory Park

Grab your bike and head to Victory Park on September 21 for a neighborhood Bike-In! Like a drive-in, but with bicycles, this FREE community event features live music, food, drinks and movies. (But you don't need to bring a bike to join in on the fun!)

Admission is free, all ages, rain or shine. Activities and Music start at 5 p.m., and the movie starts at dusk. Guests will enjoy a movie screening, live music, food and beverages from local vendors, and activities and games for kids of all ages.

Hosted by Olmsted Parks Conservancy and curated by Louisville's own Ben Sollee and Hal Riedling, this event is one of five FREE Neighborhood Bike-Ins. Each event is designed to highlight each park's unique local neighborhood, artists, organizations and businesses.

Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.

Yard waste collection times will be later due to high volume

From the Solid Waste Management division of Louisville Metro Public Works: To handle the high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment. The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see. Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

Councilman Mulvihill is committed to providing carts to District 10 residents at a reduced cost. These recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted.  The photos at left show the sizes: 64 gallon on the left, 95 gallon on the right.

The carts normally cost $53, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.  If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911)

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
