School Is Back in Session

Kids walking

Students throughout Jefferson County went back to school this week.  Please be mindful  that young children are waiting for buses on corners and on streets, and that school buses are learning new routes and making frequent stops. Please drive safely, especially in school zones.

Holy Trinity

Teachers at Holy Trinity Clifton Campus welcomed students for the first time yesterday. The new school, located in the former Clifton Center on Payne Street, serves children with language-based learning differences. I was happy to visit on Sunday with Head of School Paula Watkins, when the school hosted a blessing and ribbon cutting.  More on the school is in this WLKY report.

Howser Hall

This week marked a big improvement at another D9 school, the Kentucky School for the Blind. Students from across the state returned to campus on Sunday, with classes starting on Monday.  The school reopened the L.P. Howser Hall dormitory, which had been closed for several years, but has now been beautifully renovated.

Here’s hoping for a great school year for everyone!

Bridget Hallahan Named Fifth Division Commander

Hallahan

LMPD’s Fifth Division, which serves most of D9, has a new Commander. Bridget Hallahan began in that role earlier this month, replacing Major Aubrey Gregory, who has become Special Operations Division Commander.

Major Hallahan began her career in 1999 with the former Jefferson County Police Department (JCPD). She served as a patrol officer and detective in former David District and the Third Division. In April 2008, she was promoted to the rank of sergeant and assigned to the Seventh Division. She also served as a sergeant in the Professional Standards Unit (PSU) and the Training Division. In September 2013, she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where she served as the late watch commander in the Third Division until transferring to the Crimes Against Children Unit (CACU) of the Major Crimes Division in 2015. She was promoted to the rank of Major on August 1, 2017 and commanded the Training Division.  Hallahan is a certified law enforcement instructor and is certified to teach patrol, investigations, child abuse investigations and leadership.

Major Hallahan has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville and is currently completing her Master of Science. In 2009, she graduated from the Academy of Police Supervision at the Department of Criminal Justice Training. In 2010, she graduated from the Southern Police Institute’s 123rd Administrative Officers Course as a Dean’s Scholar.

Welcome, Major Hallahan!

Sustainability Story: Drop-Off Recycling

Recycling Dumpster

If you don't have residential curbside recycling service or if you have too much for your bin/cart, we have free recycling drop-off locations around the county for your convenience. Some are staffed by Public Works employees to help with drop-off. Others are self-serve.

There are two self-serve locations in D9: at the rear of the parking lot for the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, 201 Reservoir Avenue and at the Bowman Field Drivers License Branch, 3501 Roger E. Schupp Street.

Here's an interactive map of the drop-off locations.

What you can drop off:

Self-service and full-service locations

  • Flattened cardboard
  • Paper containers and cups
  • Milk, juice and soup cartons
  • Newspapers/inserts, phone books, magazines, junk mail, office paper
  • Plastic bottles, cups, and containers
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Metal bottles and cans

Full-service locations (not the ones in D9) also accept:

  • Used motor oil and filters
  • Used anti-freeze
  • Used cooking oil

Do’s and don’ts

  • Recyclable items at self-service locations may be mixed.
  • They should be loose in the dumpster, not in bags.
  • Items at full-service locations must be separated by material. Staff members will help unload.
  • No dumping. Take up to three large items to the Waste Reduction Center free of charge.
  • No liquids/paints/oils/etc. in the Self-Service dumpsters.
  • Flatten cardboard to save space in the dumpster.

If the dumpster is full, contact Metro311. The crews empty them on a schedule based on how long it typically takes to fill, but sometimes they get full sooner than expected.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge

St. Matthews Library New Branch Manager

Kate Leitner

St. Matthews Library has a new branch manager, Kate Leitner, who is currently manager at the Jeffersontown branch. She will assume her new duties later this month.

Kate has worked for the Louisville Free Public Library for five years, having also served as branch manager at the Portland and Shawnee branches. She previously worked at the Talking Book Library in Frankfort, a resource for people who cannot read standard print. Before that, she was the public services coordinator at the Mercer County Public Library in Harrodsburg. She has an undergraduate degree from Western Kentucky University and a Master’s Degree in library science from the University of Illinois.

Kate grew up in Louisville, living in St. Matthews and the Highlands, and moved to Chicago shortly after receiving her degree from WKU. Here’s how she views her work:

St. Matthews Library

“As a branch manager with the Louisville Free Public Library, I have the opportunity to form connections between the community and its library. I enjoy attending community meetings and events and learning more about the patrons in our service area, and I welcome suggestions for those opportunities in St. Matthews. I look forward to meeting St. Matthews community members and to learning more about the role of the St. Matthews library. The thing I love the most about LFPL is the fact that since there are so many resources and opportunities available with your library card, no two individual’s experience with the library will be exactly the same. I like teaching patrons about library resources they can use to read and learn and working with staff to streamline our workday and find ways to thrive in our work.”

In her spare time, Kate enjoys gardening and working on her nearly 100-year-old house in Germantown.

With Kate’s arrival, Micah Followay will resume his duties as St. Matthews’ assistant branch manager. Micah has overseen an abundance of activity since the branch reopened in May and we thank him for that work!
