Oprah Winfrey made famous these four simple words, "Live your best life." These four words were shared by Oprah with millions of her viewing audience during a taping of one of her shows. She also shared with them what they could do to start living their best life. Some of her suggestions were, finding your purpose, being mindful to promote happiness, staying positive in your life, and taking action in your life. Now, while I agree with Oprah's assessment of the term, today, I simply want to suggest that if you want to live your best life, then, JUST LIVE! Get out of your own head, get out of your comfort zone, get out of your way ---- JUST LIVE!
The following pictures illustrate how I chose to JUST LIVE this week --- and live, I did. From attending a Metro Council picnic (I had to get out of my head to attend, because I generally turn down invitations that require me to be outside for an extended period of time in the heat of the day, and bugs are not my thing either), to showing up at three National Night Out to Fight Crime police events (where I mounted a large ATV!), and shadowing a surgeon and observing medical professionals in real time do amazing work, I'd say I lived my best life this week. So, whatever makes you happy, do it. Go ahead, LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE (every week)!

I'm honored to be pictured here with St. Matthews Police Chief, Colonel Barry Wilkerson. I have to tell you, we are cracking up in this picture because just as one of Chief Wilkerson's officers was about to snap our picture, Chief Wilkerson called him a funny name. It was hilarious! The officer was so busy cracking up, too, that he warned us that he could not guarantee how the picture turned out.

It was a sight for sore eyes - me - getting on that ATV (thus the reason for the celebratory thumbs up). Thanks to Lieutenant Neal Tenbarge, LMPD, and the boost he gave me, I somehow was able to mount on to experience something new and adventurous. (Lol, I said that like I actually drove the ATV. Nope, it was stationary the whole time - even when the Lieutenant gave me a helmet to put on.)

Do you have a Bucket List? If you do, I recommend putting on your list an opportunity to job shadow a surgeon. I can't believe I got the opportunity to participate in the Wear the White Coat Experience.
This experience is a program that allows select community leaders to get a firsthand look at the medical field while spending a day shadowing a surgeon. This was an experience that I will not soon forget.
It's a three-part program that begins with a breakfast to introduce the 20 yearly participants to the program and

pair them with a medical doctor. I was paired with Dr. Williams, a surgeon at the Rudd Heart and Lung Center. He is FABULOUS! He is a great surgeon, but moreover, he has a wonderful personality, and bedside manners of a Saint. I was impressed beyond words by him, and by the staff. Everyone worked diligently to get their tasks done, and they made it seem so easy. Teamwork describes the entire team of professionals in the operating room and associated support departments.
I observed several gallbladder and hernia surgeries, tagged along as Dr. Williams visited his patients, both in the hospital and those getting prepped for surgery. I reported for duty at 7:15 am, and left at 4:00 pm. As I exited the building, Dr. Williams was getting ready to scrub in for his last surgery of the day. He was nonstop, and he didn't skip a beat. Somehow, I managed to

keep up. Well, I did better than I thought I would, and perhaps better than most. Not one time did I have the urge to throw up or pass out. But, I should give some of the credit to head nurse, Cathy (or maybe she spells it with a "K"). She made sure before I stepped foot in the OR, that I had eaten something. When I told her that I had only eaten a boiled egg (it's protein!), she saw to it that I ate some peanut butter and crackers. Thanks, Cathy; you are phenomenal in your role!!
Check out my hero, Dr. Williams, on the right --- and to the far left...Yes, that's also him --- the face on the elevator door! This was a great day, and thanks to Dr. Williams, the Greater Louisville Medical Society, and the staff at the Rudd Heart and Lung Center, I was able to Live my best life -- that entire day.

PICNIC WITH A PURPOSE
For 170 years, generations of friends and family gather every August for the annual Picnic at St. Joseph Children’s Home to play games, visit, eat, drink, and volunteer. St. Joe’s Picnic has been a staple of the Louisville community since before the Kentucky Derby and continues to be one of the largest fundraising events in Kentucky!
St. Joe’s Picnic For the Kids goes beyond the typical fundraiser by recruiting new foster parents, giving SJ alumni the opportunity to reunite with their peers and former staff, as well as providing an inclusive and accessible space for the Louisville community. The proceeds from this event support children who have survived abuse and neglect as well as continue St. Joe’s mission of “Giving Children a Home.”

On Sunday, August 18, enjoy this free festival from 1-4 p.m. at the Big Four Lawn right by the walking bridge. At Water for Life, children and adults can taste, touch, and experience all things water. There will be interactive exhibits, games, and bounce houses for kids as well. The Mayor’s Book Club began in 2011 as a way to encourage local reading groups to explore books with roots in different countries and cultures, as well as celebrate the diversity of Louisville. The Mayor's Book Club meets at the Main Library on the third Wednesday of the month, from noon – 1p.m. (new time: 1 - 2 p.m. beginning September 18). Brown-bag lunches are welcome.
