Mary M. Miller Cruise RESCHEDULED Once Again - August 11th

,

We are sad to announce that the Mary M Miller riverboat cruises scheduled for this Sunday, June 23rd have been CANCELLED.

Due to the large amount of rain we have experienced recently, the water levels at Riverview Park are too high for the boat to safely enter the docking area in order to board passengers.

Weather certainly has not been on our side for this event, but all reservations will be honored for the newly rescheduled date of Sunday, August 11th. Cruise times will remain at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. with boarding beginning 30 minutes prior to each departure.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call my office at (502) 574-1114. I apologize for any inconvenience this causes and I am keeping my hopes up for beautiful, sunny weather August 11th!

Treating Misquito Breeding Grounds by Louisville Metro Dept. of Health

s

Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness mosquito control program is in full force. Our team has pretreated all MSD catch basins as well as all 305 historically known flood-prone areas. We also continue to trap and test mosquitoes for diseases. We will continue this throughout the summer and implement fogging when necessary.
The 60% reduction in the amount of pesticides we purchased for mosquito control this years budget, has limited our limited pesticide supply for areas of known mosquito borne illness, areas with high population density and low economic status. Those criteria will also determine where we conduct fogging missions.
Property owners who are experiencing a surge in mosquitoes should be encouraged to reach out to private contractors to assist with mosquito control. Of course people can also call Metro Call, 311, to make mosquito complaints which we will investigate and respond appropriately.
We have more helpful information on our website, including ways to prevent mosquito bites, how to sign up for fogging alerts, and, when necessary, we will list where we are fogging.

Metro 311

me

This week MetroCall switched to a new Metro311 reporting system for the general public. You can now report issues, track issues, view past issues, comment on issues, and more from one site. Please visit http://iframe.publicstuff.com/.
To report a new issue, follow these steps:
       1. Visit http://iframe.publicstuff.com/
       2. For City, type in Louisville and select “Louisville Jefferson County Metro Government”
       3. Program developers suggest you now “sign up” for an account in top right corner. This will allow the system to track all requests. You can also choose not to sign up, which will let you make service requests anonymously.
       4. To report an issue, select the issue or type something into the search box. Then select issue.
       5. Next fill out the series of questions. You can enter an actual address or drag and drop the pin on the map to the location. Please be sure to check the address to ensure it’s a valid address.
       6. Include all details in the description and click submit.
Play around with the new system to become familiar with all the great features. You can now track other people’s service requests and the system will keep them in your account. Please let our office know if you have any issues.

Information About Tick Bites & Lyme Disease

Beware of Storm Chasers and Out of Town Soliciters

b

What to Do After a Tick Bite
As you and your loved ones enjoy the warmer weather outdoors, make sure you know what to do if bitten by a tick. Tick attachment time is important. Removing ticks as soon as possible reduces the risk of infection. Use tweezers to pull steadily without twisting.

Early Signs & Symptoms of Lyme Disease
Acute Lyme disease “flu-like” symptoms include fever, aches, headache, and abrupt and severe fatigue.
Blood tests do not accurately diagnose Lyme disease in the first few weeks of infection. A round expanding red skin lesion, greater than 2 inches, can present after a tick bite; this rash is diagnostic for Lyme disease. The rash can be but is NOT usually a “bulls-eye” rash. The rash is NOT always present or easily recognizable which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

New Dixie Hwy. News

d

Sidewalks Are NOT For Driving!
New sidewalks along Dixie Highway have been designed to improve pedestrian safety. They are not for driving or parking.
The New Dixie Highway Project team has been reaching out to local utility contractors, asking that they communicate with drivers about the appropriate way to access easements.
Community members have complained about seeing vehicles on the sidewalks – which are not designed to carry heavy equipment. In addition, blocking the sidewalks can put pedestrians in dangerous situations.
If you have questions about sidewalk use, reach out to the project team through the website.
Medians Now Being Installed!
The first new medians have now been installed on The New Dixie Highway, with more to come.

Remember:
The medians will reduce the number of dangerous, mid-block left-turns.
U-turns at signalized intersections are safer than turning left across traffic.
The new medians are non-mountable. Don’t try to drive up on them. You’ll get stuck.

District 14 Metro Public Works Updates

Construction Ahead

6201 Ashby Ln. - Allterrain Paving and Construction has been issued Permit Number 19RW3536 to close a driving lane in order to install sidewalk. Permit is valid from May 20th to August 30th.

For more details or to see additional permitted work throughout Metro Louisville, visit the map here.

SLOW DOWN

slow down

I get calls every week about speeding on our D14 streets - and with good reason.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that most people who are speeding through residential areas actually live in the neighborhood! You might be eager to come home after work, but that’s no excuse if a child is hit and injured. Quite literally, speed kills: If you hit a pedestrian at 20 mph, 5% will die. If you hit a pedestrian at 30 mph, 45% will die. At 40 mph, 85% will die.

Driver behavior is crucial to safety in residential neighborhoods.  When you’re driving, go slow enough to see and respond to every new circumstance. Look under parked cars, and you may see children’s feet from the sidewalk, though you can’t see them otherwise. If it’s dark, take another 10 mph off your speed, just in case. In short, take every precaution necessary to avoid bringing tragedy to your own neighborhood.

Please use good judgment when you are driving and remember that, in most cases, traffic behind you will be forced to slow down if you do.

New Way to Report Illegal Dumpers

d

We all know that illegal dumping--putting waste on property that is not licensed as a disposal facility--is an eyesore that is expensive to clean up, diminishes quality of life, discourages economic development and even sends plastic debris into our waterways.

That's why people caught dumping along our city's alleys, sidewalks, fields and roadsides are subject to fines and impoundment of any vehicle used in the dumping. That's where citizens can help with the problem. If you witness illegal dumping while it's happening, report it.

We've developed a new online form you can use to tell us where it happened, describe the vehicle(s) involved, preferably with license plate number(s), and even upload pictures. Of course you can always call Metro Call 311 or 574-5000. For more information about illegal dumping, including a link to the reporting form, visit our illegal dumping webpage.

Another illegal dumping vehicle impounded

Pickup was used in two separate incidents

This week Solid Waste Enforcement tracked down a white pickup truck that was recorded by surveillance back in February as it was used to illegally dump tree debris in the 3600 block of Parthenia Avenue. The offender was found through information received as we investigated a separate illegal dumping incident in the 4100 block of Craig Avenue in April for which the person was also determined to be responsible. In total, the illegal dumper will owe $1,500 in fines and approximately $250 impound fees.
