First day of school for JCPS is August 14

Jefferson County Public Schools, and other schools in Jefferson County are gearing up for the first day of school, Wednesday, August 14. Back-to-school information for JCPS is available here.

Please use caution driving near schools and school buses. Councilman Mulvihill hopes everyone has a great, safe back-to-school week.

Louisville Metro Council passes amended pedestrian safety ordinance

The Louisville Metro Council passed a pedestrian safety ordinance at last night's meeting.

The law specifies where people can cross the road, prevents people from loitering in medians and roadways, and clarifies how people or organizations can solicit.

"Louisville is the 35th deadliest city for pedestrian fatalities," Councilman Mulvihill said. "This is to make it safer."

The ordinance was amended to ensure the protection of people's First Amendment rights, especially with respect to public sidewalks.

National Night Out

LMPD's Fourth Division celebrated the 36th annual “National Night Out” at Wyandotte Park Tuesday evening.

Participants enjoyed food, games, drug prevention activities, interaction with neighbors and local business owners and police officers.

At the Jefferson Mall, Councilman Mulvihill joined LMPD's Sixth and Seventh Divisions' celebration of National Night Out.

In the photo below, left to right, are Phil Kavanaugh, who is on the Sixth Division LMPD Advisory Board, wife Stella Kavanaugh, Councilman Mulvhill, Linda Chesser, who is the mayor of the City of Watterson Park and on the LMPD Sixth Division Advisory Board, and Mr. Patterson, who also serves on the board.

National Night Out is a great opportunity for conversation in a casual, family-oriented atmosphere. The event included food, drinks, games, a police dunking booth, bike rodeo, free bike raffle and bike helmet giveaways.

It's a bull! Congratulations to Mama Mikki and the Louisville Zoo on the birth of a baby elephant

The Louisville Zoo’s 33-year-old African elephant, Mikki, gave birth to a male (bull) calf late Friday night.

“It’s an exciting day at the Louisville Zoo,” Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak said. “We are so thrilled for Mikki and this calf. We are grateful to our community for embracing Mikki’s pregnancy and being a part of her journey. Raising a calf is one of the most enriching things an elephant can experience. I am very proud of our staff and the amazing job they did to ensure a smooth and safe pregnancy for Mikki and for the calf during birth.”

Mikki gave birth after nearly a 22-month gestation (651 days). She became pregnant through artificial insemination in October 2017. An announcement of a public debut for the calf will be made at a later date.

JCPS free school supply events

Students across the Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) District have an opportunity to receive free school supplies at back-to-school events. The events are sponsored by the JCPS Family Resource & Youth Services Centers and various community partners, including Neighborhood Place and the Louisville Metro Department of Community Services.

All of the back-to-school events are free and open to the public. Students must be accompanied by an adult to receive supplies, and supplies are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. School supplies, information and services vary by site.

Saturday, August 10, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 1503 Rangeland Road, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This annual event is open to families with children in kindergarten through high school. Free backpacks and grade-appropriate school supplies (while supplies last) will be provided. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Free lunches will be served to kids by JCPS Nutrition Services and families may complete a CAP referral during the event as well for clothing and uniform assistance. A Community Resource Fair will include over twenty presenters including diabetes and blood pressure checks, the YMCA program, voter registration, library services and lots of fun and music. Youth volleyball volunteer coaches needed for Cyril Allgeier Community Center

We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help with this fall's Youth Volley Ball League. This league, run by the Cyril Allgeier Community Center, is for elementary aged kids, and promotes team work and encouraging academic achievements!

Yard waste collection delayed

Solid Waste Management Services reports that due to equipment shortages, yard waste collection is behind schedule this week and will be until additional equipment is available. Residents should set out yard waste on the usual day at the usual time, though collection may be one to two days behind schedule.

This message was also distributed through the Recycle Coach app, which is available for free on the App Store or Google Play.

On parking on grass and sidewalk weeds

A reminder, since we have received questions in the past week or so, that:

Vehicles are permitted to park in the required front or side yard only on a hard surface or approved semi-pervious driveway that does not exceed 20 feet in width and that leads to a garage, carport, house or rear yard. Vehicles must be parked on hard/durable surfaces such as blacktop or concrete and not on dirt or grass
Property owners are responsible for removing all weeds, trash, and litter from the center line of the alley, street or easement that borders the property to the property line. If your property borders public areas such as sidewalks, steps, driveways, or parking spaces, you are responsible for the upkeep of those as well.

It's mosquito season - help prevent breeding grounds

Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a half-inch of water, so make sure your yard isn't promoting mosquito breeding. Check gutters, flowerpots, grill covers, kiddie pools, birdbaths, leaky pipes, trash cans, ponds, tires or tire swings, even childrens' toys that may be holding water.

The Department of Health and Wellness has pretreated all MSD catch basins as well as all 305 historically known flood-prone areas. They continue to trap and test mosquitoes for diseases, and will implement fogging when necessary.

Property owners who are experiencing a surge in mosquitoes may also reach out to private contractors to assist with mosquito control. People can also report mosquito complaints to Metro311.

Bulky item collection guidelines are being enforced - know the rules

Pickup rules strictly enforced
Project Pickup Large Item (Junk) collection happens three times each year in Louisville's Urban Services District. It's a great way to get rid of accumulated stuff that doesn't fit in the weekly trash or recycling. The poster above is a reminder of what is and is not picked up by this service.

Option: Take items to the Waste Reduction Center
Any Jefferson County resident may drop off up to three large household items at the Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue, for FREE, year-round during regular business hours. Larger amounts are subject to a fee schedule.

Option: Donate
If your "junk" might be useful to someone in need, donate it. Some organizations, including St. Vincent de Paul Louisville and ReStore will pick up large items. Cedar Lake has suspended pick-up service but may resume in the future.

August 10 - Navigation: The Art of Finding Yourself Class

This class, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is geared toward seeing more wildlife by finding animal signs and reading what is going on in the forest. We will stretch our senses as we unlock natural mysteries to discover the survival strategies of those who live in the forest. Whether you are a birder, hunter, or nature enthusiast, this class has something for everyone. Ages 16 and up, $20 per person, register by August 8.

August 10 - August Biergarten at the German American Club

From the German-American Club:

Come be our guest for an outdoor Biergarten Saturday, August 10. Live music will be provided by the Boom Pah Pah Band!

Save the date for the Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center's 12th anniversary party on August 28 at 11:30 a.m.

Save the date - October 13 for first ever Bike for VIPS in the Parklands

District 10 neighbor VIPS, Visually Impaired Preschool Services, will have an inaugural Bike for VIPS in the Parklands on Sunday, October 13 at 9 a.m.

From VIPS: We have experienced tremendous growth and increased the number of children we have served by 15 percent annually each year for the past four years. Our most critical need is early in-home intervention services, but VIPS also offers the ONLY preschool in Kentucky or Indiana designed with the unique needs of children with blindness prior to age 5.

This fundraiser will be key: while demand for VIPS is high, funding from historically supportive agencies has declined. Check https://www.vips.org for information on the Bike event and other ways to help VIPS.

The program begins August 21 and will provide direct support to a cohort of 15 business owners through a competitive application process, with the goal of helping companies grow jobs and enhance economic development.

The initial intensive program consists of topics such as sizing up your business, exploring growth opportunities, strategic decision-making, using financial tools, strengthening products, sizing up the market, leading the organization, managing growth operations, charting financial performance, and making it happen. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offers free off-season tax prep help

Although the 2018 tax filing season has ended, free help is available in preparing past due and amended tax returns. Now through October, the Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will provide federal and state income tax assistance to income eligible residents who need help filing prior returns. It is also still possible to receive a refund for returns from the years 2016 to 2018 for those who qualify. Taxpayers earning $66,000 or less can make an appointment with a VITA team member by calling 574-5687.

The 50th anniversary Dirt Bowl tournament wraps up this weekend. It's final four Saturday with The East End versus Newburg at 7 p.m., and Relentless vs. The Champs, Business As Usual at 6.

The Super Sunday schedule is as follows: 4 p.m. - Youth Championship Game; 5 p.m. - Girls Run The World Classic; 6 p.m. - Dunk contest; 6:30 p.m. - Championship game.

August 18 - next Clearing the Air seminar

The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District's next “Clearing The Air” seminar is August 18. “Clearing The Air” gives the public an inside look at the APCD, everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful emissions. One goal of “Clearing The Air” is to give the community a place to voice their concerns about air quality.

The 90-minute workshops, which are held monthly, are free and at the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York Street, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

August 24 - third annual celebration of Women’s Equality Day

The League of Women Voters Louisville, Metro Office For Women and Frazier History Museum are planning the 3rd Annual celebration of Women’s Equality Day on August 24. This gathering will honor the 99th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment when women finally won the right to vote.

The event will be held at the Frazier History Museum and begins at 10 a.m. with networking and shopping; and the program will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Vote = Power is the theme. The program will touch on our past struggles, highlight our present challenges, urge us to plan for the future and inspire us to act now through our guest speakers Coline Jenkins, great-great granddaughter of American Suffragist and Abolitionist Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Hannah Drake, Author, Poet and Spoken Word Artist.

August 24 - Louisville Zombie Walk

Come and witness a massive horde of more than 45,000 zombies as they take over Bardstown Road. The walk is 3/4 of a mile with a festival at the end (Grinstead to Highland Ave) featuring live bands, side show style entertainment, food vendors, costume contest, Zombie Market, Zombie Car and a zombie gaming area.

This FREE event is on Saturday, August 24. The festival begins at 7 p.m. and the walk at 8:29 p.m. Price of admission is that you must dress up as a zombie related character or develop your own unique flesh eater!

Starting point for the walk is the corner of Eastern Parkway and Bardstown Road.

JustServe.org makes it easy to volunteer

JustServe.org is a free volunteer website dedicated to bringing communities together through volunteerism.

From JustServe.org: Non-profits can post the need for volunteers and those in our community can go to the website and see all the opportunities to volunteer. Because the website is self-funded, we never ask for donations to maintain the website, we never sell advertising and we never sell any information. Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services:

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.

Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.

Yard waste collection times will be later due to high volume

From the Solid Waste Management division of Louisville Metro Public Works: To handle the high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment.

The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.

RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc.

The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see.

Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging.

Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

TreesLouisville is offering a tree rebate. Those who purchase a shade tree can receive up to 40 percent off the purchase price. This is an initiative between TreesLouisville and Louisville Metro Division of Community Forestry to grow our tree canopy.

Trees are beneficial: a yard tree can boost property value up to $10,000, and trees can help lower heating & cooling bills. Louisville is the fastest warming urban heat island in the country; trees and shade help keep our city cool, improve air quality, and make for beautiful, safer neighborhoods.

New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

Councilman Mulvihill is committed to providing carts to District 10 residents at a reduced cost. These recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted.

The photos at left show the sizes: 64 gallon on the left, 95 gallon on the right.

The carts normally cost $53, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form.

This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.

If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information.

Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
