Colonial Gardens on Track to Bring 5 New South End Restaurants by End of Summer

cdc

Colonial Gardens is on track to open at the end of the summer after missing several earlier deadlines. Jeff Underhill of Underhill Associates said hungry South End diners could be enjoying tacos and tortas from El Taco Luchador in the next couple of weeks. Union 15, a pizza parlor and taproom, is expected to open in the long-vacant South End landmark later in August.

Colonial Gardens, vacant since 2003, originally was slated to reopen at the beginning of summer, but Underhill said construction delays and tenant issues made that impossible.

Underhill said the main delay, other than the Little Caesar’s lease, has been the deterioration of the original structure. He said his company had to spend an extra $1 million on the restoration.

“I know people are getting impatient to see something happen, but they have to realize the building had been vacant for nearly 20 years,” he explained. “We’ve basically rebuilt it from the inside out. We had to redo the foundation and some of the walls.”

DeSpain was impressed by the work she saw during her tour of Colonial Gardens. She said the South End has needed a development like this for a long time.

“Everything I’ve seen has been first class,” she said. “This space already has so many memories for people all over the community. I think the new development is going to become a meeting place for all the neighbors. I know my members will want to have meetings here.”

KY Transportation Cabinet Updates on Dixie Hwy

sadfsfdasfda

Below is a list of projects overseen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet happening in Southwest Louisville.

US 31W (Dixie Highway) South:The right lane will be closed at Algonquin Parkway Lane (mile marker 17.0) for construction of a concrete bus pad.

US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and sidewalk closures in place between Blanton Lane and Crums Lane (mile markers 12.5 to 15.3) due to construction for access management and bus rapid transit lines. Left lane is closed in each direction between Greenwood Road and Wells Drive (mile markers 11.6 to 11.9). Roadway is reduced to two lanes on northbound Dixie Highway between Blanton Lane and Upper Hunters Trace. Roadway is reduced to one lane southbound and two lanes northbound between Herbert Avenue and Crums Lane. In these areas where the lane closures are in place, the sidewalks are closed on the side where the roadwork is taking place. Pedestrians need to cross Dixie Highway at a signalized intersection and use the sidewalk on the other side of the road instead of walking through the construction work.

New Dixie Highway News - July 18th

v
v

The brand new sidewalks are all a part of the New Dixie Highway Project and while most of us know that sidewalks are meant to be walked on, some drivers need reminding that you're not supposed to park on these sidewalks and you're definitely not supposed to drive on them.

The sidewalks are boulevard style and were widened to 8 feet.

Kerri Richardson is the Project Spokesperson, "And we are noticing a lot of vehicles who are either driving on sidewalks to get in between businesses or parking on the sidewalks to do some work."

The pictures show trucks parking on sidewalks. The new project is in Councilman Rick Blackwell's district, "The fact is that it is a problem on a lot of levels, especially being that sidewalks just aren't made for a car or truck to be up on it."

The sidewalks alone cost 1.5 million dollars. Pedestrian safety is a huge part of the project.

"They are designed to encourage pedestrians to stay on them but pedestrians and bicyclists can't use those sidewalks if there is a truck parked on the sidewalk," said Richardson.
