Niko the cat

Niko, MALE CAT

Niko is a shy cat that’s ready to leave the shelter and settle into purrmenant home. The approximately 2-year-old Tuxedo cat’s adoption fee is waived thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Niko weighs about 11 lbs. He’s already neutered, vaccinated and microchipped! If you’ve got kitten fever and just can shake it,  you can adopt any kitten by making a $50 donation to LMAS.  Visit Animal House Adoption Center, located at 3516 Newburg Rd., Tuesday-Sunday 12-6pm.

Yeti the dog

Yeti, MALE DOG

Yeti may be big dog but he’s a gentle giant. The approximately 4-year-old Bulldog mix tips the scales at 116 pounds! Adopt Yeti and help him shed the excess weight. This very friendly dog likes meeting new people, so he won’t mind walking the neighborhood or park for exercise. His adoption fee is waived and he’s neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations.  If you’re looking for a smaller dog or puppy, take advantage of reduced adoption fees ranging from $50-100. To meet Yeti and more adoptable dog from LMAS, visit Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Rd.) Tuesday-Sunday 12-6pm. New Dixie Highway Project Median Work Continues

Dixie Median Work

More medians to be installed on Dixie Highway this week

Work has begun from Greenwood Road to Wells Drive

Crews on The New Dixie Highway Project will begin installing medians this week from Greenwood Road to Wells Drive. The median work is a critical part of the project, and this is the second section of medians to be constructed.

The first medians installed, located between I-264 and Kendall Lane, are now complete.

(See maps of where all project medians and turn lanes are being installed here.)

By installing medians, The New Dixie Highway Project will restrict mid-block left turns – and guide drivers to turn at signalized intersections or designated U-turn points.  Installing medians is the most transformative part of The New Dixie Highway project, but also the most dangerous for workers because they will be working in the middle of the roadway with traffic on both sides.

“Safety is our first priority, and in the long run, medians will prevent accidents,” said John Callihan, project manager of The New Dixie Highway Project. “But in the short-term, this is a dangerous part of the construction process and we ask for extra vigilance from drivers during this phase of the project.”

During median installation, the interior lane immediately adjacent to the work will be closed in each direction. Work will be happening in more than one location at a time. As one section is complete, crews will move to a new section, meaning that drivers should stay alert as lane closures may change without notice.

All the major components of the project will be complete by December 2019. Some final parts of project – such as landscaping and final surfacing – require warm weather and will be completed in the summer of 2020.

First phase of median work on New Dixie Highway project complete

Median installed between Upper Hunters Trace and Heaton Road

Crews on The New Dixie Highway project have finished installing the first phase of planned medians along the roadway between Upper Hunters Trace and Heaton Road.

(Read about all the progress on The New Dixie Highway project here in the newsletter.)

The medians restrict mid-block left turns and guide drivers to turn at signalized intersections or designated U-turn points.

The second phase, from Greenwood Road to Wells Dr, began last week.

The medians are the most transformative part of The New Dixie Highway project. Read more about them here.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Road Alerts & Updates

KY Transportation

Below is a list of projects overseen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet happening in Southwest Louisville.

US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and sidewalk closures in place between Blanton Lane and Crums Lane (mile markers 12.5 to 15.3) due to construction for access management and bus rapid transit lines. Left lane is closed in each direction between Greenwood Road and Wells Drive (mile markers 11.6 to 11.9). Roadway is reduced to two lanes on northbound Dixie Highway between Blanton Lane and Upper Hunters Trace. Roadway is reduced to one lane southbound and two lanes northbound between Herbert Avenue and Crums Lane. In these areas where the lane closures are in place, the sidewalks are closed on the side where the roadwork is taking place. Pedestrians need to cross Dixie Highway at a signalized intersection and use the sidewalk on the other side of the road instead of walking through the construction work.
