 As we celebrate Independence Day this week, the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District is reminding you that it is illegal in Louisville Metro to shoot off airborne and/or exploding fireworks in your yard or neighborhood.
"Excessive smoke from firework displays can impact people who are suffering from breathing ailments like asthma, emphysema, and COPD." said APCD Director Keith Talley Sr. "So please consider your neighbors before you light that fuse."
While professional shows – such as the Waterfront Park fireworks show on Thursday – are permissible, trying to replicate that experience for your family and friends at your home is against the law and may harm lives and property.
 The 8th annual Riverview Independence Festival this past Saturday was another huge hit! This southwest tradition just keeps getting bigger and better.
This year's musical lineup were absolutely amazing and kept the crowds dancing all day long. A huge thank you to festival newcomers Long Lost Country and returning favorite Shane Dawson. Our headliner Stephanie Quayle was an act to remember and is on the fast track to becoming country music's next star.

 This past weekend’s storms produced thunderstorms, flooding, and heavy rains. As residents begin to evaluate damage that may have occurred, BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky wants to remind consumers to beware of “storm chasers” and out-of-town contractors soliciting business.
BBB offers the following tips to help you avoid a scam:

Check your insurance. Talk with your insurance agent to find out about your coverage and filing requirements. Make sure to save copies of your receipts.

Ask BBB. Visit bbb.org or call 502.583.6546 to find out a company’s BBB Business Profile. This information includes the BBB rating, contact information, BBB customer complaints, and more.

Get quotes in writing. Try to get at least 3-4 quotes in writing. Be wary of any quote that seems unusually low or high compared to the others.

Check for licensure. Businesses must be licensed. Contact the Revenue Commission at 502.574.4860 to check out a company’s licensure.

Get a copy of the contract. Make sure to get a copy of your contract. Read over it carefully and ask questions on anything you do not understand. The contract should detail all the work, costs, pay schedule, and projected completion date. The contract should also state who will obtain the proper permits.

Don’t pay the full amount upfront. If a company demands full payment upfront, stay away.

Resist high-pressure sales tactics. Don’t feel pressured to hire someone on the spot. Allow yourself time to do your research before you sign a contract.

Beware of accepted payment methods. Watch out for businesses that only want cash. Pay by a credit card or check whenever possible.
Southwest Community Ministries, along with Kosair Charities, is offering an assistance program to help children in need get eye glasses! No one in the community should have live without seeing the world in crystal clear clarity, especially children.
The ministries are able to offer up to $120 per child, covering the cost of two pairs of eye glasses. This is an amazing program that can help countless families provide something that many of us take for granted.

On behalf of the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Protection District we would like to invite you to participate in our First 5K Run /Walk to benefit The WHAS Crusade for Children. This event will be the only one if its kind held in the Southwest area of Louisville. This year the race will be held on September 21, 2019.
We need area businesses and organizations to offer their monetary support to host the event. We certainly appreciate any support you can provide! The goal both as a Fire District and the community is to demonstrate innovative ways that will generate revenue to help children with special needs of the Kentucky and Indiana area and this 5K event plans to do just that!
Please remember that your company will still receive the recognition for donating toward the Crusade for Children for that year (2020). Once your contribution has been accepted we will then allocate your donation to the First 5K Run/Walk. Depending on which Donor Level your company chooses we would be pleased to display a banner or sign the day of the event with your company’s logo on it. The Southwest Dream Team (SWDT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2008 to address the negative perceptions of the south end and southwest Louisville and to help drive economic and community development of the area. Our mission is to lead a united south end and southwest Louisville to take action, raise expectations, and unite our community.
Future Dreamers Civic Leadership Program- This program was launched in May of 2019. This is a series of five, 2-hour workshops that helps expose community members to the opportunities and assets of our community, and helps connect them to the knowledge and resources necessary to address these challenges. This program will be hosted twice a year during the Spring and Fall.
The South Points Scenic Area (SPSA)- Tourism Initiative works in partnership with Louisville Metro Government to promote the natural and cultural attractions of the South Points Scenic Area. Our tourism map, produced annually, is distributed throughout Jefferson County and viewed by 100,000 individuals including visitors and locals alike.

 KY Youth Advocates (KYA) have put together six events taking place over the next month or so around Louisville to evaluate the safety, accessibility, and overall culture of different neighborhoods in the city, while simultaneously working to mobilize Louisville's youth for the purpose of furthering Complete Streets.
These events are called "walk audits". There are three main parts to each event: the training, the walk, and the debrief. The training will allow us to present the idea, purpose, and benefits of our work to the youth we're working with; during the walk, we'll get out in the area with safety vests and checklists to learn more about the neighborhood; and then finally, during our debrief, we'll reconvene to talk about what we saw and what we think it means for Louisville as a whole. (We'll also be providing lunch from a local place to participants during our debriefing session!)

Below is a list of projects overseen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet happening in Southwest Louisville.
US 31W (Dixie Highway) South:The right lane will be closed at Algonquin Parkway Lane (mile marker 17.0) for construction of a concrete bus pad.
US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and sidewalk closures in place between Blanton Lane and Crums Lane (mile markers 12.5 to 15.3) due to construction for access management and bus rapid transit lines. Left lane is closed in each direction between Kendall Road and I-264 (mile markers 14.2 to 14.7). Roadway is reduced to two lanes on southbound Dixie Highway between Blanton Lane and Upper Hunters Trace. Roadway is reduced to one lane southbound and two lanes northbound between Herbert Avenue and Crums Lane. In these areas where the lane closures are in place, the sidewalks are closed on the side where the roadwork is taking place. Pedestrians need to cross Dixie Highway at a signalized intersection and use the sidewalk on the other side of the road instead of walking through the construction work.

U-turns Will Be an Important Part of The New Dixie Highway
U-turns will be a “new normal” along the New Dixie Highway. This video above is a look at the ins and outs of doubling back. Key takeaways:
- U-turns are legal in Kentucky, unless a sign prohibits them.
- U-turns at signalized intersections are safer than turning left across traffic.
Those turning right onto Dixie Highway, should yield to U-turning vehicles.

First Medians Now Installed
One of the single biggest changes on The New Dixie Highway project will be medians along a four-mile stretch of the roadway. By restricting mid-block left-turns, these medians will make Dixie Highway safer for drivers. But this is a dangerous part of the construction process. The first medians, from Kendall Lane to just north of Heaton Road, are almost complete and those lanes should be reopened by July 4. Additional medians will be installed later this year.
About the New Dixie Highway Project
The New Dixie Highway Project is a $35 million investment to improve safety, mobility and livability along the corridor. The project will concentrate on three major areas of improvement:

Roadway safety and design improvements, including raised medians and left-hand-only turn lanes along the most congested and dangerous section (Crums Lane to Greenwood Road).
- A new Intelligent Transportation System that will improve and coordinate traffic signal timing along the entire corridor.
The region’s first TARC bus rapid transit route, with eight priority buses and 37 highly visible bus stations and stops that will improve travel times for both transit riders and drivers.
