Southwest Community Ministries, along with Kosair Charities, is offering an assistance program to help children in need get eye glasses! No one in the community should have live without seeing the world in crystal clear clarity, especially children.

The ministries are able to offer up to $120 per child, covering the cost of two pairs of eye glasses. This is an amazing program that can help countless families provide something that many of us take for granted.

What to Do After a Tick Bite As you and your loved ones enjoy the warmer weather outdoors, make sure you know what to do if bitten by a tick. Tick attachment time is important. Removing ticks as soon as possible reduces the risk of infection. Use tweezers to pull steadily without twisting.

Early Signs & Symptoms of Lyme Disease Acute Lyme disease “flu-like” symptoms include fever, aches, headache, and abrupt and severe fatigue. Blood tests do not accurately diagnose Lyme disease in the first few weeks of infection. A round expanding red skin lesion, greater than 2 inches, can present after a tick bite; this rash is diagnostic for Lyme disease. The rash can be but is NOT usually a “bulls-eye” rash. The rash is NOT always present or easily recognizable which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

Meals on Wheels Delivery

takes about an hour weekly, twice a month if you prefer to deliver two days/month. We have a Tuesday route that departs from Sun Valley Community Center (10:00 am) or a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday route departing from Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in the afternoon (3:30).

Food Pantry 

Volunteers of America have recently opened new addiction recovery locations to better serve the community. They have several programs at 1436 South Shelby Street. Freedom House is a residential program for pregnant and parenting women. Shelby Men’s Recovery Center is also located on South Shelby. This is a 90 day residential program for men, where clients are able to work while seeking treatment. They have Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and services for men, women and families. These services are available at 2500 West Broadway and 4303 W Broadway. Transitional Housing will be available in July for homeless women with children who would like to continue their sobriety at 4303 W Broadway

If you are know someone who may be interested in VOA’s programs, please contact the intake office at 502-635-4530. They’re able to do a quick screening, verify their insurance, and set up an intake date and time.

The Southwest Dream Team (SWDT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2008 to address the negative perceptions of the south end and southwest Louisville and to help drive economic and community development of the area. Our mission is to lead a united south end and southwest Louisville to take action, raise expectations, and unite our community.

Future Dreamers Civic Leadership Program- This program was launched in May of 2019. This is a series of five, 2-hour workshops that helps expose community members to the opportunities and assets of our community, and helps connect them to the knowledge and resources necessary to address these challenges. This program will be hosted twice a year during the Spring and Fall.

The South Points Scenic Area (SPSA)- Tourism Initiative works in partnership with Louisville Metro Government to promote the natural and cultural attractions of the South Points Scenic Area. Our tourism map, produced annually, is distributed throughout Jefferson County and viewed by 100,000 individuals including visitors and locals alike.

The orchestra is made up of local part-time and full-time musicians who have come together to perform great music and share their passion for and love of music with the community. The Mary M Miller riverboat cruises scheduled for this Sunday, June 23rd have been CANCELLED.

Due to the large amount of rain we have experienced recently, the water levels at Riverview Park are too high for the boat to safely enter the docking area in order to board passengers.

Weather certainly has not been on our side for this event, but all reservations will be honored for the newly rescheduled date of Sunday, August 11th. Cruise times will remain at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. with boarding beginning 30 minutes prior to each departure.

The 2018 Cultural Pass is presented by Churchill Downs in partnership with Metro Louisville, Arts and Culture Alliance, Louisville Free Public Library and the Fund for the Arts.  The Little Loomhouse is participating again this year and adding an extra day for Pass holders.

Your Cultural Pass will be honored 4 Days A Week at the Little Loomhouse 

June 2-August 11

• Tuesdays  10 - 3pm

• Thursdays  10 - 3pm
• Saturdays  11 - 4pm

Pass holders enjoy one free seek-n-find tour with an art experience and discounted weaving for $7 (typically $12), where participants weave their own souvenir to take home. The Cultural Pass program is open to anyone ages 0-21 years, who are eligible for a Louisville Free Public Library Card. Youth and parents can pick up a pass from any local Louisville Free Public Library branch or Metro Parks Community Center. The pass must be presented upon entrance to gain free admission.

 Cat Caretakers living in the following Jefferson County zip codes 40208, 40209, 40213, 40214, 40215, 40216, 40217, 40219, 40258 and 40272 are eligible  for spay/neuter services for unowned community cats,  They will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, treated for flea and ear-mite medicine, given a great vet visit, ear-tipped (the universal symbol of a neutered cat) and returned.

When there are no more kittens; the number of cats gradually goes down  and annoying behaviors such as yowling, fighting, spraying stop.
