Mayor’s Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle Returns on Memorial Day, May 27th! Activities begin at 8 a.m./hiking, biking, paddling at 10 a.m. at Waterfront Park. Subway Restaurants is again the title sponsor of Hike, Bike & Paddle, with presenting sponsors, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated, Norton Healthcare and Neil Huffman Subaru. Academy Sports + Outdoors is a contributing sponsor.
"Subway Restaurants is proud to again be the title sponsor of the Mayor’s SUBWAY Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle, celebrating its 15th year. The events happening today give people an opportunity to be outside in the fresh air and lead healthy, active lifestyles," said Umang Patel, Louisville SUBWAY Board Chair.
More than 50 vendors and information booths will open at 8:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park. Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba and Pickleball demonstrations will be offered starting at 8 a.m., along with group participation.
2,500 free t-shirts will be available for those arriving early and completing a brief survey. Thanks to sponsor support, this year’s t-shirt is an upgraded performance sport material. Subway will be handing out free cash gift cards to be used at any Subway location, while supplies last. The Brain Injury Association will distribute 500 helmets to riders who don’t have one. Neil Huffman Subaru will be giving away a free bicycle and kayak at the event. Participants are encouraged to be “green” and bring their own water bottles, which they will be able to fill at Waterfront Park and at various water stations along the routes, as part of Louisville Water’s Pure Tap To Go.

Bridge Repair in Jefferson County - May 28th

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently awarded a contract for repair of the bridge over Pond Creek on Pendleton Road in Jefferson County. This project includes full depth patching of the deck and a latex concrete overlay. Construction at the bridge on Pendleton Road is currently scheduled to begin on May 28. Lane closures will be used for two weeks during the initial phase of construction. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging operations.

Full closure of Pendleton Road is scheduled to begin on June 10 and will last for approximately 30 days. The road will be closed between East Orell Road and Medora Road. Motorists will need to follow the signed detour via East Orell Road to Blevins Gap Road to Medora Road and then reconnect with Pendleton Road.This bridge on Pendleton Road over Pond Creek was built in 1938 and is currently posted with a weight limit of nine tons. Louisville Paving and Construction was awarded the construction contract for $426,000. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2019.

This bridge repair project is part of KYTC’s Bridging Kentucky program. Bridging Kentucky includes more than 1,000 state, county, and municipal structures that are rated in poor condition or have restricted weight limits. More than 70 of the bridges on the list are currently closed to traffic. Each bridge will be addressed in the next six years, either replaced with a new structure designed to last at least 75 years or rehabilitated to extend its life by at least 30 years. Those with restricted weight limits will reopen to school buses, emergency vehicles, commercial trucks, as well as passenger vehicles. Fans Needed for Seniors & Disabled Residents - June 3rd

KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living is once again teaming up with Louisville Metro Office for Aging & Disabled Citizens (OADC) to collect electric fans for seniors and persons with physical disabilities. The fans will be distributed to qualified individuals within the KIPDA region including Jefferson, Bullitt, Henry, Shelby, Oldham, Spencer, and Trimble Counties.


Donations of new box fans will be collected through June 3rd at:
               -KIPDA, 11520 Commonwealth Drive (Lou., KY 40299)
               -WLKY Studio, 1918 Mellwood Ave. (Lou, KY 40206)
Drop off hours are Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
Monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase fans. Make checks made payable to KIPDA, Attn: Fan Fair Program and mail to the address on Commonwealth Drive listed above postmarked by June 3rd. On June 8th, a “Fan Fair” will be held from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. at the Edison Center located at 701 W. Ormsby Ave. to distribute the collected fans to seniors 60 and older, as well as to individuals with physical disabilities, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Due to the severe thunderstorms last Sunday, the scheduled Mary M Miller cruises set for April 14 from Riverview Park was postponed. The new rescheduled date will be Sunday, June 23rd. The cruise times will remain at 1:30 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. and all reservations made with Southwest Community Ministries will be honored for the rescheduled date. Advanced reserved seats are still available and new reservations can be made by visiting Southwest Community Ministries and giving a suggested $5 minimum donation. On the day of event, seating will be on a first come first served basis.

What to Do After a Tick Bite
As you and your loved ones enjoy the warmer weather outdoors, make sure you know what to do if bitten by a tick. Tick attachment time is important. Removing ticks as soon as possible reduces the risk of infection. Use tweezers to pull steadily without twisting.

Early Signs & Symptoms of Lyme Disease
Acute Lyme disease “flu-like” symptoms include fever, aches, headache, and abrupt and severe fatigue.
Blood tests do not accurately diagnose Lyme disease in the first few weeks of infection. A round expanding red skin lesion, greater than 2 inches, can present after a tick bite; this rash is diagnostic for Lyme disease. The rash can be but is NOT usually a “bulls-eye” rash. The rash is NOT always present or easily recognizable which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment.


New Dixie Hwy Project Entering Critical Stage

Median Work to Begin Between Upper Hunters Trace and Heaton Road; launching the most transformative and dangerous parts of construction
Crews on The New Dixie Highway Project will begin installing medians next week between Upper Hunters Trace and Heaton Road. This means the crews are launching a critical part of the project almost a month ahead of schedule.
By installing medians, The New Dixie Highway Project will restrict mid-block left turns – and guide drivers to turn at signalized intersections or designated U-turn points. Installing medians is both the most transformative part of The New Dixie Highway project – but also the most dangerous for workers because they will be working in the middle of the roadway with traffic on both sides.
Crews had been expecting to start work on medians in June, but recent favorable weather conditions meant they were able to complete sidewalk and gutter work between Upper Hunters Trace and Heaton Road ahead of schedule. They will begin median work in that same section of roadway as soon as possible, sometime during the week of May 6.
During median installation, the interior lane immediately adjacent to the work will be closed in each direction. Work will be happening in more than one location at a time. As one section is complete, work will move to a new section, meaning that drivers should stay alert as lane closures may change without notice.
The New Dixie Highway Project broke ground in December of 2017 and all the major components will be complete by December of 2019. Some final parts of project – such as landscaping and final surfacing – require warm weather and will be completed in the summer of 2020.
Medians will be “non-mountable” so passenger vehicles cannot drive over them. Widths will vary with available space, with landscaping at key locations. While it may seem counter-intuitive to drivers, restricting mid-block left-turns creates not only a safer corridor, but a more efficient corridor. While some drivers will have to drive slightly further to reach their destination, the improved efficiency and reduction in accident-related congestion will mean a better traffic flow for everyone.
About the New Dixie Highway Project
The New Dixie Highway Project is a $35 million investment to improve safety, mobility and livability along the corridor. The project will concentrate on three major areas of improvement:
              -Roadway safety and design improvements, including raised medians and left-hand-only turn lanes along the most congested and dangerous section (Crums Lane to Greenwood Road).
              -A new Intelligent Transportation System that will improve and coordinate traffic signal timing along the entire corridor.
              -The region’s first TARC bus rapid transit route, with eight priority buses and 37 highly visible bus stations and stops that will improve travel times for both transit riders and drivers.

Radon is the silent killer lurking inside homes and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the country. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is offering free radon test kits while the supply lasts.

I get calls every week about speeding on our D14 streets - and with good reason. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that most people who are speeding through residential areas actually live in the neighborhood! You might be eager to come home after work, but that’s no excuse if a child is hit and injured. Quite literally, speed kills: If you hit a pedestrian at 20 mph, 5% will die. If you hit a pedestrian at 30 mph, 45% will die. At 40 mph, 85% will die. 

Driver behavior is crucial to safety in residential neighborhoods.  When you’re driving, go slow enough to see and respond to every new circumstance. Look under parked cars, and you may see children’s feet from the sidewalk, though you can’t see them otherwise. If it’s dark, take another 10 mph off your speed, just in case. In short, take every precaution necessary to avoid bringing tragedy to your own neighborhood.

Please use good judgment when you are driving and remember that, in most cases, traffic behind you will be forced to slow down if you do.

Southwest Community Ministries is looking for kindhearted, friendly people to deliver meals to home-bound seniors in the 40272 and 40258 zip codes.

Delivery takes about an hour weekly. There is a route on Tuesdays that departs from Sun Valley Community Center (10:00 am) or a route on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays route departing from St. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in the afternoon (3:30).

New Way to Report Illegal Dumpers

We all know that illegal dumping--putting waste on property that is not licensed as a disposal facility--is an eyesore that is expensive to clean up, diminishes quality of life, discourages economic development and even sends plastic debris into our waterways.

That's why people caught dumping along our city's alleys, sidewalks, fields and roadsides are subject to fines and impoundment of any vehicle used in the dumping. That's where citizens can help with the problem. If you witness illegal dumping while it's happening, report it.

We've developed a new online form you can use to tell us where it happened, describe the vehicle(s) involved, preferably with license plate number(s), and even upload pictures. Of course you can always call Metro Call 311 or 574-5000. Pickup was used in two separate incidents

This week Solid Waste Enforcement tracked down a white pickup truck that was recorded by surveillance back in February as it was used to illegally dump tree debris in the 3600 block of Parthenia Avenue. The offender was found through information received as we investigated a separate illegal dumping incident in the 4100 block of Craig Avenue in April for which the person was also determined to be responsible. In total, the illegal dumper will owe $1,500 in fines and approximately $250 impound fees.
