Mike Hancock, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary, has approved a change order to Gene Snyder and Shelbyville Road intersection improvement project, which many of you realized was needed. An "auxiliary lane connecting the south-bound ramp onto I-265 to the west-bound ramp of I-64" will be built.
The point I made to KYTC was that the original project only increased the top of the funnel without increasing the size of the outlet tube. Now, the traffic will not backup on the ramp. I appreciate everyone’s support at KYTC District 5 especially Chief Engineer Matt Bullock.
Come and share your ideas and concerns directly with Mayor Greg Fischer at the next “Talk to Greg” meeting at Fern Creek High School.
At “Talk to Greg” … Mayor Fischer will be joined by city department directors, mayor’s office staff and Metro Councilmembers. There are four "Talk to Greg" meetings schedule in 2012 and the upcoming event at Fern Creek High School is the closest venue for District 19 residents.

The Louisville Metro Council will hold their first metro council meeting of the year on Monday, January 9 at 6:00 p.m. - the same time as the mayor's "Talk to Greg" meeting. Council members will elected a council president, council clerk and deputy clerk.
The Board of Zoning Adjustment and Development Review Committee both unanimously approved the applicant’s request for signs to be installed on the three existing brick walls in Landis Lakes Shopping Center.
Dan Pellissier with Faulkner Real Estate says many of the business owners requested the signs to increase their visibility from Shelbyville Road and to remain competitive.
BOZA members supported their plans with the following conditions:
· the maximum number of signs cannot exceed 25.
· no “programmable” LED signs
· individual signs can’t exceed 16 sq ft & must be the same size
· no new free standing sign or wall will be constructed
The shopping center is comprised of several lots so the code does allow for additional free standing signs to be built on each parcel; however, it was agreed that any future new sign request would have to go through the BOZA process.
This week Metro Public Works crews removed a bucket and some metal siding from a pipe that was causing flooding across Aiken Road at Shelbyville Road. The debris completely restricted water from flowing into the catch basin and flooded the roadway.
Mayor Byron Chapman, City of Middletown, took the above picture and reported the drainage problem.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will close temporarily the entrance ramp from Story Avenue to westbound Interstate 64, beginning Monday, Jan. 9, in an effort to reduce traffic crashes.
After the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge, the exit ramp from westbound I-64 to I-65 was closed to improve traffic flow where these two routes merge with Interstate 71. As a result, the free-flow traffic condition from Story Avenue to I-64 was changed to a short merge condition. To help with traffic control, KYTC installed first a yield sign and subsequently a stop sign at the top of the ramp.
“But we have observed a disregard for the traffic control devices at the Story Avenue ramp resulting in an increase in crashes,” said Matt Bullock, Chief District Engineer for the Department of Highways Louisville District. “After reviewing crash data and traffic operations at this location, we decided to close this ramp until the Sherman Minton Bridge reopens.”
Eleven crashes have occurred at the Story Avenue ramp, including eight rear-end collisions, since the Sherman Minton Bridge closed on Sept. 9, 2011. In the three years prior to the bridge closure, two crashes were reported at the same location – both involving alcohol. Approximately 2,700 vehicles use the entrance ramp each day.
KYTC plans to install barricades at the entrance ramp on Monday, Jan. 9. To access westbound I-64, motorists will need to follow Story Avenue to Main Street in downtown Louisville and then access the interstate at 22nd Street.
Construction for the new sidewalk that will connect the existing sidewalk in front of the Middletown Kroger and extend approximately 260' to the shopping center's entrance will begin next week, weather permitting. This section of sidewalk will fill in the gap created after Kroger built a new sidewalk that was required as part of their approved expansion plans.
