I’ve been keeping pretty busy this week. On the legislative front, I’ve cast several votes to approve the Mayor’s appointments to boards and commissions. Also, I supported an ordinance adding some new regulations to non-owner occupied short term rental Conditional Use Permit (CUP) applicants, including a rule providing a minimum distance of 600-feet between short term rentals approved by Conditional Use Permits. The new ordinance would not impact your ability to occasionally rent out the property in which you live, and rentals with non-residential zoning. (For details on the ordinance, click here.)
As you know, I serve on the Budget Committee. Keeping busy is the name of the game serving on this committee. Budget hearings began this week, and will continue through June 20. The hearings are for Metro Louisville department heads to present their budgets to the Council, and for everyday citizens to voice their opinions regarding the budget. It’s an interesting process.
We hosted the first public hearing on Tuesday, and two additional public hearings are scheduled for May 16 and May 20. Both hearings begin at 6:00 p.m., in the first floor conference room of City Hall, 601 W. Jefferson St. Sign-up sheets for the public hearings will be available one hour prior to the public hearings. For a complete schedule of meetings, click here. Also, don’t forget, all Metro Council committee meetings are shown live on Metro TV, Spectrum Cable Channel 184 and UVERSE Channel 99. The meetings are also available online at the Metro Council home page at http://louisvilleky.gov/government/metro-council/metro-council-clerk by clicking on the “Watch Meetings Online” button.
I rounded out the week fighting crime! Well, not really. Actually, I simply rode along as Officer Barbara Shepard, my new best friend, fought crime. Officer Shepard is with the St. Matthews Police Department. She is conscientious, alert, and quick on her feet. I was privileged to observe her ‘protect and serve’ for two hours. She answered calls, carried out traffic enforcement and issued warnings and citations. From Westport Road to Shelbyville Road, and several streets in between, we drove around, radared cars and stopped citizens who failed to make a proper stop at a red light. Officer Shepard has a keen eye. She spotted things that I missed, and quizzed me along the way to make sure I understood the violations and use good judgment in assessing a situation. It was a very informative and positive experience. Thank you, Mayor Tonini and Colonel Barry Wilkerson, St. Matthews Chief of Police, for arranging (at my request) the educational ride-along. I learned a lot, and gained insight into how organized and thorough the St. Matthews Police Department operates.
In conclusion, District 7, I urge you to slow down and be responsible, safe drivers. I assure you, the St. Matthews Police Department is watching!
P.S. Officer Shepard also discussed seat belt safety. Please, District 7, wear a seat belt every time you get in a car; it could be the very thing that saves your life.
