Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms, and all of those filling the role of Mom, for all you do.

St. X mourns the loss of Dr. Perry E. Sangalli

From St. X: It is with heavy, yet grateful, hearts that we share the news of Dr. Perry E. Sangalli's passing.

Dr. Sangalli, a 1976 St. X graduate, positively impacted thousands of students, alumni, parents and faculty, and led the school through the greatest period of academic, physical and spiritual growth in its 150+ year history.

During his tenure as head of school, Dr. Sangalli led initiatives that dramatically increased support for need-based financial aid and merit-based scholarships; expanded and enhanced academic and athletic facilities; and earned the school’s fourth designation as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

Having served as President since 2001, Dr. Sangalli demonstrated that one may be both a visionary and a pragmatist; a leader and a servant; proud and modest; fair and forgiving. We are broken-hearted for our loss, but grateful for the time that God granted us with our colleague and friend.

Even with his accomplishments as a visionary leader, Dr. Sangalli is even better known for his warmth, openness, and concern for each of God’s children.

"I had the privilege of working with Dr. Sangalli to improve Poplar Level Road and the surrounding neighborhoods," Councilman Mulvihill said. "His leadership and compassion will not only be a loss for St. X, but for all of us.”

Obituary
Dr. Perry E. Sangalli, age 60, died Sunday, May 5, at Baptist Health.

Born in El Paso, Texas, Perry was President & CEO of St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Ky. He was a graduate of his beloved St. X (Class of 1976) and earned his PhD from Spalding University. A gifted musician, he was an organist for parishes across the Archdiocese. Perry enjoyed food, travel and his entire St. X Family. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Forrest Sangalli. Dr. Sangalli is survived by his father, Eugene P. Sangalli; and his two brothers, James D. and Robert D. Sangalli.

His funeral Mass was celebrated this morning at Holy Trinity, and burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Sangalli Endowment at St. Xavier.

Congratulations to D10's Metro Parks Volleyball Association Panthers for their Mayor's Cup win

Congratulations to the Metro Parks Volleyball Association 12-1 Panthers for winning the Mayor's Cup last weekend in a well played and hard fought championship game. Thank you to SPEVA, BRAVO, and Georgetown Force for coming to play in the tournament as well.

The Metro Parks Volleyball Academy (MPVA) offers high level junior club volleyball training and competitive league competitions at reasonable prices. We are located at Cyril Allgeier Community Center and operated by Louisville Parks and Recreation department.

Grand Opening for 21st Amendment Tavern

Councilman Mulvihill and his mom, Mary Margaret Mulvihill, visited Andrea Riegling at the newly opened 21^st Amendment Tavern in Schnitzelburg.

Congratulations to Andrea and her business partners and staff on the Grand Opening of this historic site, which is at the corner of Shelby Street and East Burnett Avenue.

We appreciate Andrea's commitment to the neighborhood and her investment.

As part of the development of this location Andrea reached out to TARC through CM Mulvihill in order to provide a TARC Bus shelter on the E Burnett side of the building.

Budget Hearings underway - Metro Council seeks public input

The Budget Committee has begun budget hearings this week with public hearings Tuesday.

The Committee schedule includes two remaining opportunities for the public to speak about the budget. Public hearings are scheduled for May 16 at 6 p.m. and May 20 at 6 p.m.

The May 16 public hearing will be open to all speakers on the budget. On May 20, no External Agency applicants will be permitted to speak and the committee hopes to hear from the public about more general aspects of the budget.

Sign-up sheets for the May 16 and May 20 meetings will be available one hour prior to the public hearings.

Louisville Metro Public Works paving projects scheduled for the week of May 13 include

Burnett Avenue from South Preston Street to Eastern Parkway.

The schedule is subject to change due to weather and operational factors.

Yard waste collection times will be later due to high volume

From the Solid Waste Management division of Louisville Metro Public Works: To handle the high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment.

The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.

May 11 - Nature's Works and Quirks

It's back! A program the whole family can enjoy. Nature's Works and Quirks is a program that is focused on all things nature. All sessions are from 10 a.m. to noon.

Investigate your natural surroundings and learn to understand the relationships of wildlife and the ecosystem! Each themed month lets your child explore science in fun ways to better understand the natural world! Environmental games, animal encounters, nature crafts, stories, and other nature activities help to illustrate and reinforce the ecological concepts covered in daily adventures. Upcoming themes include:

May 11 - Turtles - (moved to the second Saturday for Derby)
June 1 - Trees - register by May 25
July 6 - Birds - register by June 29

Rain barrels are back for sale at LNC - conserve water, help reduce storm water runoff, and support the LNC. They are $74, or $69 if you purchase two or more barrels. Prices include six percent sales tax.

May 11 - 26th Annual Throo the Zoo 5K

From the Louisville Zoo: Come out and join us on May 11 at 8 a.m. for a fun-filled journey Throo the Zoo. The day will start off with a 5K with awards and prizes. After the 5K is over, all registered participants can spend the rest of the day seeing the Zoo at a much slower pace with their complimentary pass to the Louisville Zoo.

Louisville Parks and Recreation is seeking information from current and future pool users in an effort to provide alternative swimming options during the 2019 summer swim season.

Metro’s four outdoor pools (Algonquin, Fairdale, Norton and Sun Valley) will not be opening due to budgetary challenges caused by an increase in the state pension bill. Metro Parks’ goal is to use your feedback to create the most useful alternatives possible.

Metro Arts Community Center now open

We are excited to announce the Metro Arts Community Center is now open! The building recently received a colorful new window wrap, and new programs and classes will be coming to the site, which is now known as the Metro Arts Community Center. May 11 Louisville Grows Annual Seeds and Starts Sale

Louisville Grows Seeds and Starts Sale will be Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the greenhouse in the People's Garden (536 N. 44th St.) in the Shawnee neighborhood. All of our plants and herbs are started by volunteers in the greenhouse and sold for less than at most commercial retailers.

The annual Seeds and Starts Sale is a fundraiser to provide support to community gardens throughout Louisville. Proceeds from the sale go directly into our Community Garden Grant program.

May 18 - Forest Fest at Jefferson Memorial Forest

A day of Bluegrass music, food, craft vendors and youth activities in a scenic environment awaits those who visit Jefferson Memorial Forest for this year's Forest Fest. Each year Forest Fest is recognized for providing a great variety of bluegrass and Americana music; this year’s event will continue that tradition as six musical acts hit the stage. Admission is free with $10 parking.

The show kicks off at 11 a.m. in the Forest’s Horine Section, 12304 Holsclaw Hill Road.

Forest Fest includes a variety of entertainment options for children, including live nature demonstrations and a climbing wall, during the day. Workshops by performers will begin at 12:30 p.m., and a craft fair from noon to 5 p.m. will feature artists from across the region. Food and beverages will be available for sale.

Each month, Neighborhood Place partners sponsor numerous events and resources to benefit the entire family. Activities in May include a free, eight-week Women’s Empowerment Group, the “Eat This Not That” workshop, and much more:

Mondays, through July 1, Women’s Empowerment Group at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 1411 Algonquin Parkway, 5 to 7 p.m. This free, eight-week series focuses on educating and empowering women by building knowledge and skills in multiple areas. (Excludes Monday, May 27). Presented by Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place and Urban Strategies, Inc. the Women’s Empowerment Group was created by women to serve women to provide a safe, welcoming space that encourages participants to speak openly and candidly. Children are welcome to accompany their parent or guardian with special kids programming provided by Play Cousins Collective while the women’s group is in session. Includes a graduation ceremony on Monday, July 1, for those who complete all sessions. RSVP to 634-6050 to help with planning because dinner will be served at the end of each segment.

June 13 - The Food Cure - next Louisville Grows 2019 Film Series screening

From Louisville Grows:

The Louisville Grows Film Series is designed to promote discussions and mindfulness towards healthy living, healthy eating, environmental education and social justice. From utilizing fallen trees to exploring ecosystems to discovering the relationship between the food you eat and diseases, these films promise to inform and entertain.

The films will be shown every second Thursday of the month through August, taking a break in May. Check out the Louisville Grows’ website and Facebook page for more information on the film featured each month. The Film Series will be at Healthy House, 1641 Portland Avenue. Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services:

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.

Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.

RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc.

The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap is now available online! This new, layered map comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see.

Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging.

Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.

TreesLouisville is offering a tree rebate. Those who purchase a shade tree can receive up to 40 percent off the purchase price. This is an initiative between TreesLouisville and Louisville Metro Division of Community Forestry to grow our tree canopy.

New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.

If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information.

Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
