Civil Rights Leader Shelby Lanier Jr. has passed away

.

Shelby Lanier Jr., the beloved activist who helped force Louisville to hire and promote more black police officers, has died. He was 82. His niece, Yolanda Lanier, said he wanted to be remembered as Louisville’s first black motorcycle officer and as the organizer of the Louisville Black Police Officers Organization. Councilman David James was quoted in the Courier Journal saying, "He's my hero. He was my hero, It's very important to have diversity … because having that diverse voice adds to the culture and fabric of our city and ensures that the officers interacting with citizens are treating all citizens fairly." The memory of officer Shelby Lanier Jr., will always be in our hearts.
