Dear Neighbors and Friends,
The proposal to double the insurance premium tax has failed. By a vote of 15 to 11, the measure was defeated with mixed emotions on both sides of the issue. I was a “No” vote as announced to you in an earlier e-Newsletter. While 15 of us did not support this tax increase, we know that the road ahead to find $35 million in cuts and efficiencies will be rough. We shall start anew to find a comprehensive, long-term solution to the budget deficit and rising healthcare and pension costs. Rest assured, I am ready and willing to work with Mayor Fischer to devise a practical and sustainable plan for our future.
In next week’s e-Newsletter, I will share more about how the vote impacts our community and how each of you can play a role in voicing your opinions on how we move forward to identify palatable cuts in the budget. Stay tuned and prepare to roll up your sleeves with me. The Metro Council has faced difficult times in the past, much tougher than the votes that were cast on this measure Thursday night. But we have never lost our spirit; we will continue to demonstrate our resilience by remaining committed to the task before us, and the beliefs that have always sustained us.
I will keep you informed and in the loop!
Respectfully,
Councilwoman Paula McCraney

Last week District 7 students at Bowen Elementary participated in an Earth Materials lesson. Susan Sampson with the Louisville Water Company educated the second graders on the topic.
The Earth Materials lesson taught the students the importance of the Ohio River as an amazing natural resource. The students learned about the rock and sand in the aquifer beside the river, and how those earth materials help naturally filter the river's water. Students actually built water filters out of rock and sand to demonstrate the process That process allows Louisville Water Company to start its purification process with naturally filtered water before it creates the Louisville pure tap that we all drink.
To book an earth materials program or other free education programs offered by Louisville Water, email bcrow@lwcky.com. Each year, Louisville Water educators visit over 100 schools with experiments on science, health, social studies, math, and literacy. The curriculum uses water as the foundation for a variety of real-world examples.

First Stop - District 7!
Sunday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. Carrie Gaulbert Cox Park
Kentucky Shakespeare will once again take the show on the road with the 2019 Shakespeare in the Parks tour. Their 6-actor, 90-minute production of Macbeth will tour to 28 parks in Louisville, Indiana, and other Kentucky cities this spring, bringing free Shakespeare to neighborhoods April 6-May 25, 2019.
“We couldn’t be happier to be able to serve so many parks and neighborhoods with this tour. We’ll again have backup rain spaces for each location too, so you can join us rain or shine. We’re grateful for the opportunity to bring this special free family event to neighborhoods across the area!” says Producing Artistic Director Matt Wallace.
The production is directed by Amy Attaway, Kentucky Shakespeare’s Associate Artistic Director. “We’re excited to share this accessible new adaptation of Shakespeare’s popular tragedy following a couple broken by their unchecked ambition and quest for power," she added, “Simply put, none of this would be possible without the neighborhood sponsors of this tour. Thank you to the twenty Louisville Metro Council members who’ve sponsored performances in their districts plus White Clay, Locust Grove, Norton Commons, the Tyler Park Neighborhood Association, the Mayors and cities of Lyndon, New Albany, Jeffersonville, St. Matthews, La Grange, Shively, Mt. Washington, Pewee Valley and Jeffersontown.”
Councilwoman McCraney and Councilman Bill Hollander are sponsoring the season's first showing of the classic play on Saturday, April 6, 2019 in District 7's very own Carrie Gaulbert Cox Park at 6:30 p.m. Audience members are invited to bring their own chairs, blankets, and picnics for this free, family-friendly community event.
There will also be a showing in District 7 on Saturday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Matthews Community Park, 10 Ten Pin Lane.
The production features an ensemble cast of six actors: Dathan Hooper as Macbeth, Megan Massie as Lady Macbeth, Zachary Burrell as Macduff, Owen Kresse as Duncan, Charity Means as Malcolm, and Mollie Murk as Banquo. All of the actors also play other multiple roles in the production. The production features costumes by Donna Lawrence-Downs, sound design by Laura Ellis, fight choreography by Eric Frantz, and set design by Hannah Allgeier, with Racheal Luther as the stage manager.
A number of District 7 residents have voiced their frustration regarding dogs wandering neighborhoods without leashes, and owners who take their pets on walks and do not clean up after them. Please help keep our neighborhoods safe and clean, and follow the following laws:

- Has, in his or her possession, a suitable device for the picking up, collection
and proper sanitary disposal of the animal feces or manure.
- Immediately removes all feces deposited by such animal(s) and disposes of
same in a sanitary manner.

Registration for the Brightside & Passport Health Plan Spring Community-Wide Cleanup is open! The cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 13th with the suggested cleanup times of 8:00am – 12:00pm. All cleanup teams will receive bags and gloves at no cost, and the first 5,000 volunteers to register will also receive a free t-shirt.
