 FEBRUARY 2019

Seal

Greetings from the OSHN Team!

Here in the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods, we are celebrating love and Black History (because we love Black History) this month. We encourage you to take part in any and all celebrations happening throughout Metro, and in the larger community. If you have any that you would like to promote please share them with us, and we will spread the word!

There is so much happening here in the office and above all, out in our community. It is our goal to keep you engaged, involved and leading our important work. Our vision for Louisville is a city of safe neighborhoods, where everyone is supported, free of violence, and prepared for lifelong success. We can only achieve this together, so stay connected with us on social media, our new and improved website, and when you see us out in these streets of course!

Here is a look back at the happenings in January, and a peek at what's coming this month...

Youth Implementation Team and THRIVE Fellows Meet cast of 'PIPELINE'

Pipeline

In January, our Youth Implementation Team and THRIVE Fellows had the opportunity to sit down with the cast of Actor's Theatre's production of PIPELINE, written by 2018 MacArthur "Genius Grant" Recipient Dominique Morisseau. The play, which ran from January 8-February 2, takes a hard look at the school-to-prison pipeline and the impact on layers of intersecting relationships of individuals, families and systems.

The topic and timing of this production was especially relevant to the work and lived experiences of both groups, and they had the opportunity to see the play, and lead the space with cast members in what turned out to be an emotional and authentic experience for all.

We would like to publicly thank Actor's Theatre and the cast of PIPELINE for making the time, space, and tickets available for our youth to share in this experience.

THRIVE Fellows Highlight: Damon Duncan

Damon Duncan

We want you to get to know the members of our first cohort of THRIVE Fellows as the stories they are learning to tell about themselves (as opposed to the narratives they are often given), so we will be highlighting a Fellow in each issue, as told in their own words. This month, we are highlighting Damon Duncan!

Damon was born and raised in Louisville Kentucky. He is the youngest sibling out of 5 on mothers side and youngest out of 3 on fathers side as well. Damon received his NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research), OSHA10 (Occupational Safety Health Administration) , and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certifications through the Kentuckiana Builds program from The Louisville Urban League. He also values fairness, honesty, respect, and faith. In his past he spoke that he's never lived by these values. Since the turning point of his life, these values has made his life much brighter.

Damon is currently interning in our office assisting with our Outreach efforts.

Cities United’s and Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods Civic Engagement Fellowship is a 24-month experience that will serve as a catalyst to changing the landscape for local civic engagement, participation and leadership. While serving as a vehicle to increase the life outcomes of young black men and boys, their families and their community by connecting fellows to opportunities, individuals, and the support needed to be successful, the fellowship will also focus on identifying opportunities to make system level changes. for more information about the fellowship contact our THRIVE Coordinator, Amber Burns-Jones

Two of our youth leaders, a THRIVE Fellow, and our Director, Rashaad Abdur-Rahman will be representing Louisville at the convening.

We will kick off with a Day of Service and Community Dinner on Monday, February 18 followed by two full days together for a mix of mainstage sessions, breakout sessions, and evening events. National Youth Violence Prevention Week 2019

NYVPW

Planning for National Youth Violence Prevention Week has begun. If you are not familiar with this initiative, from the website:

The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness and to educate students, teachers, school administrators, counselors, school resource officers, school staff, parents, and the public on effective ways to prevent or reduce youth Violence. This week long national education initiative will involve activities that demonstrate the positive role young people can have in making their school and community safer."

This is an exciting opportunity to lift up Louisville along with a national initiative taking a stand against violence. We hope that you will join in on this effort so that we can be loud with one voice that preventing youth violence is within our grasp. Please reach out to our Youth Specialist, Nubia Bennett if there are any questions or if any support is needed around participating the week of April 8th.
