The Louisville Asset Building Coalition hosted its second annual Taxathon for low-income families.

Volunteers provided free tax service at the Louisville Urban League. In 48 hours, they booked all 240 spots for the two-day event.

Some consider the 1969 Central High School Yellowjackets (35-1) the best high school basketball team in Kentucky history. Led by explosive shooting guard Ron King and 5'7" point guard Otto Petty, Central’s 1969 boys’ basketball state championship was the first won by a historically black high school after the KHSAA integrated in 1956-57. Coach Robert Graves became the first black head coach to claim a Sweet Sixteen title. King’s 44 points in the 101-72 defeat of Ohio County in the state finals was, at the time, the title game record. What an honor it was to recognize the 50th anniversary of this amazing accomplishment and these wonderful gentlemen.

Kentucky Shakespeare hosted its 6th Annual Shakespeare In Love gala at 21c Museum Hotel.  The evening featured music from the Jerry Tolson Jazz Trio, a photo booth, DJ and dancing. 

HOW’S YOUR HEART?

Do you know how healthy your heart is? What if you could find out how likely you are to have a heart attack or stroke? Some had these questions answered when the University of Louisville schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health and Information Sciences, along with community partners, hosted a free heart health clinic at Bates Memorial Baptist Church.  This program helped participants learn their heart health, ways to prevent heart attack and stroke, and provided treatment for those in need.

As our community continues to grieve over the loss of 10 year old Seven Bridges, Oremeyi Kareem was inspired to bring a diverse group of folks together who in turn created a video message titled Say No to Bullying.

It is our hope everyone will consider the times in their life they were bullied and pledge to speak out against it at the very moment they see it.

SAY NO TO BULLYING!

During Simmons College of Kentucky's inaugural Transform Louisville Education Breakfast, board chairman Barney Barnett revealed that he and his wife pledged to give $4 million . This generous donation will go toward renovating buildings on Simmons' campus and establishing an endowment. 

More excitement came when Dr. Kevin Cosby, president of Simmons College of Kentucky, formally honored Betty and David Jones, Sr. for their long time financial support which began with a $1 million gift 14 years ago.

Bryan Holden's artwork capturing the inspiration of Manfred Reid and the aspiration of 3rd grader Alexia is now on permanent display outside on the walls of New Directions' Russell Apartments located at the corner of Muhammad Ali Blvd. and 18th Street.

Upon close inspection you will see Bryan used keys from computer keyboards donated from throughout the community to create these images. You will notice at the bottom of each portrait a gray key with the number 4, and red/white/blue keys with the initials AMH. These initials honor his father's memory and his son's presence. 

It's time to recruit those volunteers to head out and help make a difference in your communities this spring and take part of the Brightside & Passport Health Plan Community-Wide Cleanup! The date has been set for Saturday, April 13th, 2019 and we are proud to be the kick-off event for Mayor Fischer’s Give-a-Day: Week of Service!

Online registration will open on Friday, February 15th at www.brightsideinc.org so be sure to mark your calendars; all cleanup teams will receive bags and gloves at no cost, and the first 5,000 volunteers to register will also receive a free t-shirt, so sign up quickly to secure your t-shirt!

The Brightside & Passport Health Plan Spring Community-Wide Cleanup is an easy way for groups to come together to not only remove the litter from their green spaces and roadways but to also build and foster the sense of civic pride and community that comes along with the work. Many corporations and businesses use this event as a team building opportunity while giving back to the community they serve!

We all know that illegal dumping--putting waste on property that is not licensed as a disposal facility--is an eyesore that is expensive to clean up, diminishes quality of life, discourages economic development and even sends plastic debris into our waterways.

That's why people caught dumping along our city's alleys, sidewalks, fields and roadsides are subject to fines and impoundment of any vehicle used in the dumping. That's where citizens can help with the problem. If you witness illegal dumping while it's happening, report it.

We've developed a new online form you can use to tell us where it happened, describe the vehicle(s) involved, preferably with license plate number(s), and even upload pictures. Of course you can always call Metro Call 311 or 574-5000. Households with incomes below $64,000 are eligible for participation in this program.Please note that the IRS does not allow our program to prepare returns that include farm income, income from rental properties or businesses or self-employment income that includes depreciation or that includes expenses for other employees of the business.

There are two ways that you can take advantage of the free tax services:

1. Self-File: Click here to access free versions of Turbo Tax or My Free Taxes (H&R Block's product) and click on the Free Online Tax Filing tab which is located near the top of the page. Prepare and e-file your own return. Assistance, if needed, is provided through an 800 number.
2. Traditional VITA Service: You schedule an appointment using this site and work with a certified volunteer that will assist you in preparing your return, review it with you and efile it for you when finished.

The Slow Food Bluegrass School Garden Grant supports a school garden project based in Louisville, KY with $5,000 distributed over the course of three years: $2,500 in year one, $1,500 in year two, and $1,000 in year three. To be eligible for a Slow Food Bluegrass Garden Grant, applicants must be a (a) 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or (b) nonprofit (public or private) K-12 school, developing a student garden project focused on connecting and engaging children with fresh fruits and vegetables. Priority is given to both limited-resource communities and to projects clearly demonstrating strong buy-in from stakeholders.
