Many gathered at the announcement of  Louisville Metro Government’s plan for using mid-year surplus funds to further address the needs of those experiencing homelessness.

The plan is a collaboration between the Office of Resilience and Community Services and the Coalition for the Homeless. It includes funding additional beds, cots and mats, housing for homeless families, as well as meals and outreach workers to connect individuals to resources throughout the community. It also provides options to house and care for homeless persons’ pets. It also provides funding for a storage facility where homeless people can store their belongings when going into shelter, and four options for low-barrier shelter via Volunteers of America, Wayside Christian Mission, The Healing Place and St. Stephen Baptist Church.

Funding for the work stems from Metro Council’s transfer in December of $546,791 from the city’s year-end budget adjustment; the funding covers initiatives through June 30, 2019.

The plan builds on the work of the Homeless Encampment Task . Councilman Bill Hollander, who initially proposed using the surplus funding to help the homeless, said: “I appreciate the hard and rapid work of the Office of Resilience and Community Services, the Coalition for the Homeless and all of the community partners in developing this plan. Homelessness has many causes and no one solution. The work we are starting now recognizes those facts, will help get some Louisvillians experiencing homelessness off of our streets, and will serve as a bridge to a more permanent plan to address their needs.”

Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith agreed: “Funding for low-barrier shelters and services for those experiencing homelessness will be a budget priority for 2020 as we on Metro Council work through this coming budget cycle."

BAREfit Adventure Training celebrated its new space inside the Logan Street Market in the heart of Shelby Park.  Training is geared toward outdoor adventure sports and some say the strength training is good enough to prepare you to wrestle a bear!

"Most of the people attracted to what we do  don't really like regular gyms. Maybe they feel more at home in the outdoors, " said owner Rob Bratcher.  BAREFit is located at 1101 Logan Street.

New Way to Report Illegal Dumpers

dumping

See Something Say Something!!!!

We all know that illegal dumping--putting waste on property that is not licensed as a disposal facility--is an eyesore that is expensive to clean up, diminishes quality of life, discourages economic development and even sends plastic debris into our waterways.

That's why people caught dumping along our city's alleys, sidewalks, fields and roadsides are subject to fines and impoundment of any vehicle used in the dumping. That's where citizens can help with the problem. If you witness illegal dumping while it's happening, report it.

We've developed a new online form you can use to tell us where it happened, describe the vehicle(s) involved, preferably with license plate number(s), and even upload pictures. Of course you can always call Metro Call 311 or 574-5000. For more information about illegal dumping, including a link to the reporting form, visit our illegal dumping webpage.

Individuals who are not able to attend the mandatory orientation in person may view a recording of the session which will posted on the External Agency Fund (EAF) website at https://louisvilleky.gov/government/external-agency-fund by close of business on Mon., Jan. 14.

The competitive grants are available for Social Services programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS), and for Arts and Creative Industries programs, administered by Louisville Forward. The External Agency Funds are awarded annually to non-profit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson County that align with the Mayor's and departments' strategic goals.
