Seasons Greetings from the OSHN Team!

Here in the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods, we are celebrating holidays, progress, and one another  in the spirit of gratitude for all that we have accomplished this year, and excitement for all that is to come in 2019 and beyond.

There is so much happening here in the office and above all, out in our community. It is our goal to keep you engaged, involved and leading our important work. Our vision for Louisville is a city of safe neighborhoods, where everyone is supported, free of violence, and prepared for lifelong success. We can only achieve this together, so stay connected with us on social media, our new and improved website, and when you see us out in these streets of course!

Here is a look back at the happenings in November, and a peek at what's coming this month...

One Love Louisville Implementation Team Highlight: Brittney Ridge

Implementation Team Highlight

Team work makes the dream work! Every month, we will be highlighting the amazing people who move forward the important work of the One Louisville Louisville Implementation Team. This month's feature is Brittney Ridge!

Brittney is currently a Corporate Development Manager at Metro United Way, where she has been for just over 2 years. Originally from Southern Indiana, she completed her undergraduate at UofL and after working abroad for 2 years she returned to complete her Master’s in Community Development.

Prior to working with Metro United Way, Ridge spent over 10 years in 5 countries as a community developer and entrepreneur. She convened community and government leaders to solve the most pressing issues and translated conversations to action. Her success as a community developer is noted by her work in equal access to basic needs, women’s/children’s health and empowerment, peace negotiations, resourcing education systems and sustainable programming are a highlighted few. While at her longest stay in Mauritius she was an artisan camembert cheese maker as a side gig.  Locally she is passionate about housing solutions to meet the changing need for flexibility, adaptability and affordability.

Contributing as a member of the One Love Louisville Implementation allows her to further understand the intentionality of community impact through the meaningful work of the Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods.

“By intersecting community impact and development approaches in conjunction with collaborative and collective action, we can provide lasting solutions and a framework of continuous improvement.”

Ridge has seen great synergy and heart in Louisville. She reminds us that in order to stay authentically connected to our individual and civic growth, we must continuously re-imagine ourselves and our community. Invite others to the table, require equitable lens and conversation, be a bold thought leader for good and be prepared to move conversation to action.

Youth Implementation Team Meets with Mayor Greg Fischer

Youth Team Meeting

After months of research and preparation, our One Love Louisville Youth Implementation Team had their first advisory meeting with Mayor Greg Fischer on Saturday, November 17, 2018.  The hour-long meeting took place in the Mayor's Large Conference room, and was entirely youth-led.

Team-members chose topics from our 5 Core Areas of Community Engagement (Education, Community Building, Economic Development, Criminal Justice, Mental Health/Social Wellness) that impact their communities; Read through the administration's budget, strategic plan, and action plans, and prepared a meeting agenda. Both Mayor Fischer and our Youth Implementation Team Members came away from the meeting with tangible next steps and confidence the next in the planned series of meetings ahead would be generative and solution-focused.

If you have any questions about the Youth Implementation Team, or would like to have them engage in community-building with your organization, please contact our Youth Specialist, Nubia Bennett at Nubia.Bennett@louisvilleky.gov.

Mayor and Partners Announce Federal Grant to Launch Trauma Resilient Community Initiative

SAMHSA

Mayor Greg Fischer and officials with the University of Louisville and Centerstone Kentucky announced that the city has been awarded a $5 million, five-year federal grant to launch an initiative to promote resilience and equity for Louisville families and young people most affected by trauma, inequity and violence.

The Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods will manage the Trauma Resilient Community Initiative, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in partnership with U of L’s Kent School of Social Work and Centerstone Kentucky.

The initiative will use a community-based approach to build a “trauma-informed” system of care and services to children and families exposed to violence. The effort is meant to increase the knowledge and skills of people who respond to, make referrals and provide services to youth and families affected by violence, trauma and racial inequity.

The partners aim to provide trauma treatment to 400 children and their families in west and south Louisville, where data shows that youth and families are disproportionately affected by trauma, violence and systematic inequities. The initiative also involves training 200 clinicians in trauma interventions, and 200 first responders, volunteers and community service providers in a special first-aid approach to youth mental health.

Another 40 service providers, public school officials and leaders will be trained in a trauma-resilient approach through the initiative, which will also share the trauma-care information to 50 community agencies serving youth and families and develop a leadership advisory board to increase awareness of trauma and its effects. The initiative includes evaluation of its consumer impact.

Campaign for Black Male Achievement: Promise of Place Convening

Pop

The Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA) held its second annual Promise of Place (PoP) National Convening on November 12-14, 2018 at The Muhammad Ali Center.

Attendance targeted group of leaders across Promise of Place cities who are deeply engaged in their communities to expand outcomes and opportunities for Black men and boys.  CBMA worked with local partners in Detroit, Oakland, Milwaukee and Baltimore to plan and host a local Promise of Place Strategy Day in each of these cities. As part of the PoP National Convening, we will built upon this work and create space for solution-focused discussion, elevating local challenges, successes, and strategies to advance collaboration and collective impact on behalf of Black men and boys and the engagement and networking with national partners and city-cohort leaders across the field.

8th Annual Rumble Young Man Rumble!

BMB

OSHN participated in CBMA's 8th Annual Rumble Young Man Rumble (RYMR) November 28-30, hosted by the Muhummad Ali Center. We joined other local and national leaders building on the conditions that ensure Black men and boys participate fully in the present, and are prepared to construct a better future.

Since launching in 2011, RYMR has evolved into the premier gathering of national cross-sectional leaders and institutions taking a stand for Black male achievement. RYMR provides strategies and resources that enhance and increase effective practices, thereby improving life chances for Black men and boys across the nation.

This year's Rumble highlighted the work of leaders and organizations across the country, elevated Louisville as an epicenter of innovation and progress for Black men and boys, and culminated with a presentation of a key to the city to CBMA CEO, Shawn Dove, by Mayor Greg Fischer.
