Free storm debris drop-off sites

Louisville Metro Public Works is still providing free drop-off service for residential storm debris through Saturday, December 1 at seven locations.

In addition, residents of the Urban Services District may set storm debris out with regular yard waste, if it is bundled with twine.

Eligible debris includes tree limbs and other compostable materials. No construction or demolition materials, shingles, municipal garbage or man-made materials will be accepted. Branches should be less than four feet long and two inches wide.

The free service is available only to Jefferson County residents, who must show a government-issued identification verifying they live in the county. Contractors or persons for hire are not included in the free service and will be charged according to the posted fee schedule.

Leaf drop off sites open now through December 1:

• The Louisville Metro Waste Reduction Center has reopened. The facility, which offers drop-off disposal of large waste items at 636 Meriwether Avenue, will accept leaf drop-off service through December 1.
• Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane), Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Public Works East District Operations Center, 595 Hubbards Lane, Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

Attention District 10 residents: New federal dollars available to house Louisville's most vulnerable citizens

Wellspring is pleased to partner with Louisville Metro Housing Authority in the rollout of newly available federal funds through the HUD 811 Mainstream Housing Choice Voucher Program. The vouchers provide new subsidies for Affordable Housing to people at-risk of homelessness or institutionalization. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $98.5 million to 285 local housing authorities, and Louisville is one of the recipient locations and started with 89 vouchers. The Program provides funding to housing agencies to assist non-elderly people with disabilities who are: transitioning out of institutional or other separated settings; at serious risk of institutionalization; homeless; or at-risk of becoming homeless. Wellspring is a Louisville non-profit promoting mental health recovery and supports individuals in building healthy and hopeful lives through housing and psychiatric rehabilitative services. Wellspring will provide case management and peer support as needed to eligible participants. Wellspring also offers Crisis Stabilization Programs, extensive Supportive Housing, an Affordable Housing Program with 120 units of deeply subsidized rental housing and a Supportive Employment Program that helps clients find meaningful employment. These programs support clients along their individual paths to recovery. Wellspring facilitates community integration by reducing stigma and strengthening personal and neighborhood connections. Meals on Wheels still needs volunteers in our area

From Senior Nutrition: Volunteers are needed to deliver a hot lunchtime meal to seniors within our area, between 10 a.m. and noon. A weekly commitment of approximately two hours is desired.

We will train and supply equipment for your use, but you must provide your own transportation.

Men's winter basketball leagues registration underway for Cyril Allgeier Community Center

Louisville Parks and Recreation is accepting team registrations for its adult men’s winter basketball leagues. Games will be played Sunday afternoons at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center, 4101 Cadillac Court, beginning January 6, with game times of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 p.m. The fee is $500 per team, and participants must be 18 or older. Deadline to register is December 15, or until leagues are filled. For more information on how to register, please click here. Good news - MSD's emergency repair of the vital sewer line under Main Street is nearing completion

The final phase of repairing a large, 84-inch diameter sewer line, which is more than 20 feet
below Main Street, is nearing a conclusion. MSD contractors are completing installation of the corrosion-resistant PVC panels, which mold to the unique shape of pipe to form a new pipe inside of the old pipe.

Additionally, crewsare pumping a special concrete mix into the small space between the PVC panels and the old pipe. This process bonds the new pipe and the old pipe to form a stronger structure. The pipe repair will be complete, and wastewater flow restored to the pipe, by December 10. Crews will begin removing the “pump-around” on December 12. This process will continue through December 21.The pipe carries 40 percent of the community’s wastewater to MSD’s Morris Forman Water Quality Treatment Center for proper treatment and release to the Ohio River.

LIHEAP registration continues

The LIHEAP Program that helps low income residents of Jefferson County with their utility bills begins on November 5. LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, is a federally funded, income-based program that provides financial help to low-income households in meeting the costs of heating their home. The LIHEAP Subsidy Component is a one-time assistance benefit, which is paid directly to the heating vendor. The LIHEAP Subsidy Component begins Monday, Nov. 5 and will operate through Dec. 14, or until funding is depleted, whichever comes first. Residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. The appointment system is currently open and is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There are many outreach organizations who are checking on homeless individuals and distributing needed supplies. Kit has experienced a lot of change recently so he’s feeling a little stressed in the shelter. The five-year-old Tuxedo cat ended up at the shelter when his owner died. December 1-2 and 8-9 - Picture your pets with Santa

For the 31st year in a row, Santa Claus and more than 800 volunteers will take time out of their busy schedules to help local homeless animals. The annual Picture Your Pets with Santa at all 23 Feeders Supply stores will be held the first two weekends in December on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is expected to attract more than 5,000 families and raise more than $100,000 for ten local animal charities: the Kentucky Humane Society, Floyd County Animal Rescue League, Franklin County Humane Society, Humane Society of Oldham County, Lexington Humane Society, Saving Sunny, Shamrock Pet Foundation, Barktown Rescue, Boone County Animal Control and J.B. Ogle Animal Shelter. “Picture Your Pets with Santa is the largest—and the oldest—pets with Santa photo event in Kentucky and Southern Indiana, and thousands of families look forward to making holiday memories while supporting local shelter animals,” says Andrea Blair, KHS spokesperson. While dogs and cats are the most common participants, animals of all species are welcome, as well as their human families. Some of the more unusual guests have included chickens, bunnies, bearded dragons, guinea pigs and even horses. Photos are offered in various packages, starting at $12. Gift items featuring the pet’s photo, including ornaments, mugs and key chains are also available, starting at $14. Pet owners are asked to have dogs on leashes and cats and other pets in carriers. Horses can be photographed outside with Santa. Picture Your Pets with Santa is a volunteer-driven event, and 100% of proceeds benefit the participating animal rescue organizations. Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

With so much infrastructure work and utility construction going on throughout District 10, garbage and recycle pick-up may interrupted or delayed. Solid Waste Management Services is making every effort to get to every street during this period.

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance. Collection crews have recently been reminded to enforce the ordinance consistently.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here. Or consider hiring a hauling company or rent a dumpster.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Beginning July 14, 2018, the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

Kentucky's Republican-dominated legislature voted to impose sales taxes on services on April 2. Now, services such as landscaping, janitorial services, grooming for small pets, fitness centers, car repair and items sold by governments are subject to a six percent tax. 

This affects our discounted recycle cart program. The normal purchase price for the carts is $50, plus six percent sales tax, for a total cost of $53. 

Metro Council District 10 will continue to provide $25 towards the purchase of this cart. Constituents will be asked to pay the difference of $28 going forward. 

The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.  The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left).

The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. The reduced cost recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
