With 2020 (the centennial of the 19th Amendment and the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act) fast approaching, there’s no better time to commemorate Louisville’s own suffragists — the folks whose struggles helped secure voting rights for women and expand access for all.
As part of an initiative launched by the National Women’s History Alliance adapted by representatives of the Frazier History Museum, the League of Women Voters Louisville, and the Louisville Metro Office For Women, volunteers will be stationed at 3 area cemetery entrances Tuesday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. distributing maps identifying gravesites of more than 20 local suffragists.
On the way to or from the polling place, voters are invited to stop by one of these cemeteries to pay their respects at the gravesite of a suffragist. Each gravesite is a sign and floral arrangement. Visitors will be able to add their names to signs of thanks.
All voters and elected officials, regardless of their political party or persuasion, are encouraged to participate.
The cemeteries are Cave Hill Cemetery and Eastern Cemetery, adjacent properties on Baxter Avenue in the Highlands, and Louisville Cemetery on Poplar Level Road. Volunteers will be stationed to direct voters to the sites and Cave Hill Cemetery provides an app on Google Play and Apple for locating graves.
Voters are encouraged to share images of their visit through social media using the hashtags: #hereliesasuffragist #2020suffragecentennial #kywomenvote100
