New Dixie Construction - North of I-264

Construction Closes Lanes, Limits Left Turns in Shively

Construction on the $35 million New Dixie Highway project began a new phase Sunday, closing some driving lanes in Shively north of I-264.

Traffic is restricted between Herbert Avenue to Crums Lane to one southbound lane and two northbound lanes.  This traffic configuration was chosen in order to maintain two lanes of traffic off the improved westbound I-264 exit to north Dixie – otherwise, traffic could back up on the expressway. This pattern is expected to be in place for six months.

To maintain traffic flow onto the single southbound lane on Dixie Highway, crews also closed the right southbound lane of Dixie Highway at the Walgreens just north of Crums Lane, as well as the right southbound lane of 7th Street in front of the CVS. These lane closures are necessary due to southbound Dixie being reduced to one lane between Crums Lane and Herbert Ave.

Finally, crews installed traffic delineator posts in the center of the highway every two feet to separate the lanes and prevent mid-block left turns. The delineator posts begin approximately in front of Mary Queen of Peace’s Community Building and continue to Byerly Nissan.

Left turns into US Bank and the Byerly Nissan entrance from the southbound lane are prohibited.

These changes were made at the request of Shively Police and Shively Fire, who were concerned that mid-block left turns from a single southbound lane would cause further traffic delays.

“This is the first significant construction work north of I-264, and safety and traffic efficiency are extremely important,” said Rob Harris, construction manager for KYTC District 5.  “We worked with Shively Fire and Police to make sure we developed the most effective traffic plan for keeping traffic moving while maintaining safety.  As a Shively resident myself, we all want to make sure drivers and pedestrians remain safe as crews complete their work.”

Weather Challenges Not Delaying New Dixie Highway

hn

With more than 55 inches of rain this year, more than 20 inches above the average, crews working along The New Dixie Highway have had more than the usual weather challenges. Nevertheless, they have remained largely on schedule. The project was always scheduled to be complete in the winter of 2019-2020. Project Manager John Callihan said the BRT will be operational and the lanes should be in their final configuration by that time frame – but some final details that are weather dependent may be later.

US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and sidewalk closures in place between Greenwood Road and Crums Lane (mile markers 11.7 to 15.3) due to construction for access management and bus rapid transit lines. Roadway is reduced to two lanes on southbound Dixie Highway between Blanton Lane and Greenwood Road and on northbound Dixie Highway between Upper Hunters Trace and Heaton Road.

Beginning Saturday, Oct. 27 Dixie Highway will be reduced to one lane southbound and two lanes northbound between Herbert Avenue and Crums Lane.
