Soil testing at Champions Park shows landfill cap not disturbed; Edith Avenue reopened
LOUISVILLE (Oct. 19, 2018) – Edith Avenue has been reopened after state and city testing confirmed that a clay cap installed as a protective layer over the old Edith Avenue landfill at Champions Park has not been disturbed.
The state Energy and Environment Cabinet and an environmental firm hired by the city took samples from the area earlier this month, which were then sent to two separate independent labs to verify there is no contamination and the site continues to be safe.
A contractor soon will begin smoothing out ruts and tracks left on the park grounds after heavy rain and flooding caused cancellation of the annual Bourbon & Beyond and Louder Than Life festivals in September. The gates around that portion will remain up while that work is being done.
Mayor Greg Fischer said he was pleased about results of the testing, which assures park-users and festival-goers alike that Champions Park remains a great venue for recreation.
He thanked the state for their cooperation and quick work.
