Louisville Metro Resilience and Community Services (RCS) is offering pre-registration for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Subsidy Component. The pre-registration will begin on Wednesday, October. 3, and end on October 31. Pre-registration is for Jefferson County residents who are elderly (60 years or older) or disabled and receive a fixed income (Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits).This pre-registration phase is for the LIHEAP Subsidy Program, meaning eligible residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills.

 Applicants must provide the following documentation:

• Proof of all household income for the preceding month (Food Stamp award letter, Social Security Award letter, pay stubs, etc. or proof of $0 income. Note: Zero Income forms are available at the Resilience and Community Services office at 701 W. Ormsby Ave., Suite 201 as well as the six LIHEAP locations listed below or by clicking here.
• Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
• Most current heating bill; or statement from your landlord if heating expenses are included in your rent; or statement from your utility company if you participate in a pre-pay electric program. Please bring the account number and name on the account for all heating fuel sources and electric. 

Eligible residents who wish to apply during LHEAP Early Registration are required to make an appointment in advance. Starting today, Sept. 26, the toll-free automated appointment system is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The caller can follow the prompts to get the information needed and/or to schedule an appointment if available.  The system provides a confirmation number indicating that an appointment was successfully scheduled.

• Choose the desired location for your appointment (the six LIHEAP office locations are listed below.)
• Choose a date/time for your appointment
• Record your name – say and spell your first and last names slowly and clearly
• Enter a contact phone number
• Enter your 12-digit LGE account number (if applicable)
• Enter the last four digits of your Social Security number and date of birth
• Receive your appointment confirmation number (have pen/paper ready)
• Appointment details (location, date and time) will be repeated
• List of documents to bring to the appointment will be given

Volunteers of America have recently opened new addiction recovery locations to better serve the community. They have several programs at 1436 South Shelby Street. Freedom House is a residential program for pregnant and parenting women. Shelby Men’s Recovery Center is also located on South Shelby. This is a 90 day residential program for men, where clients are able to work while seeking treatment. They have Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and services for men, women and families. These services are available at 2500 West Broadway and 4303 W Broadway. Transitional Housing will be available in July for homeless women with children who would like to continue their sobriety at 4303 W Broadway

In a release, UPS said full and part-time seasonal jobs as package handlers, drivers and driver-helpers is a good entry to a permanent position with the company. More than a third of seasonal hires land permanent jobs after the holidays - including part-time jobs -- include healthcare and retirement benefits.

 At  UPS Louisville, part-time employees are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in tuition assistance through the company's Earn and Learn program.

WHAT IS THE VOICE OF DEMOCRACY PROGRAM?

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program.  Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, Why My Vote Matters.

WHY SHOULD I ENTER?

Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the Post, District, state and national level. Department (state) winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2019, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its VFW Auxiliary and receive their portion of $155,500 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.

THE RULES Who can enter?

The Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades 9-12 by the Oct. 31 deadline, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States, its territories and possessions. Although U.S. citizenship is not required, students must be lawful U.S. permanent residents or have applied for permanent residence (the application for which has not been denied) and intends to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity allowed by law. Foreign exchange students, students age 20 or over, previous Voice of Democracy first place state winners, GED or Adult Education Students are ineligible.

All entries competing at the Post level must be in the hands of that VFW Post by midnight, Oct. 31, 2018.

This Fall, the highly anticipated Community Junk Drop-Off, will be held at the Sun Valley Ball Fields. Due to its vast growth in participation, the event can be accessed from the Lower River Rd. Entrance ONLY (EXITING on to Ashby Ln). 

The Community Junk Drop-Off has become a truly valued resource for the District 14 community. Not only does it provide constituents with a useful avenue to dispose of their accumulated junk, but is also a proven tool in deterring illegal dumping. On October 20th, Councilwoman Fowler is happy to once again offer this free event to all District 14 residents. Load up your junk, haul it to the site, and simply drop it off at no cost to you!

-No hazardous materials, such as refrigerant, paint, or chemicals will be accepted. -No concrete, bricks, rocks, or other construction materials -No batteries -Please note that you must be a resident of Jefferson County to participate.

It may only be the middle of October, but Louisville Metro is looking for someone to donate the large Christmas tree that will stand in Jefferson Square Park through the holidays.

“Just like most families preparing for the holidays, we’re looking for the perfect Christmas tree,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “This is the main attraction at Light Up Louisville and it will stay up throughout the holiday season.”

The tree should be a spruce or fir, about 40 feet tall and well-shaped. The city will cut and transport the tree to its prominent spot across from Metro Hall at Sixth and Jefferson Streets. Anyone interested in donating a tree should call MetroCall 311 (574-5000). The tree donor will attend the Light Up Louisville sponsor reception as a featured guest of Mayor Fischer for the Light Up celebration. 

Light Up Louisville is held annually on the day after Thanksgiving. This year, the event, in its 38th year, will be held on Friday, Nov. 23.

The tree will be moved with the support of LG&E, Bob Ray Company and Louisville Parks and Recreation.

Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or using curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at one of three drop-off sites beginning November 6.

Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service November 6 through December 1. Drop-off will not be available on November 22 and 23 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.
