Edith Road Closed Temporarily

Edith Road closed

Edith Road between River Road and Mellwood Avenue remains closed pending tests to determine whether vehicles on the soccer field portion of Champions Park breached a cap which covers an old landfill at the site.  Samples have been taken and are being analyzed, with results expected within a week or so.  The road will reopen after the test results are known and a remediation plan is determined.

In the meantime, the portion of Champions Park which formerly housed the River Road Country Club has reopened to the public, although sections will be closed from time to time while the site is graded and reseeded.  That section of the park is not built on a landfill and is not part of the environmental testing.

Champions Park was the site of the Bourbon & Beyond festival last month.  The second day of the festival was canceled after heavy rains created unsafe conditions at the park.  The Louder Than Life festival scheduled at the park the next weekend was also canceled as a result of the muddy conditions.  The soccer fields at the park were designated for camping during the festivals.  The old country club was the site of the festival itself, which attracted some 25,000 people.

2nd Annual Craft Beer Throwdown – Oct. 11

Craft Beer

Six local breweries are doing their part to end youth homelessness in our community by competing in the 2nd Annual Craft Beer Throwdown on Thursday, October 11th. This popular event is spearheaded by the Coalition for the Homeless Associate Board and will benefit the organization’s efforts to end youth and young adult homelessness. It will be held at the Louisville Water Tower Park, 3005 River Road, from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. For a $20 online donation in advance or $25 at the door, attendees can taste six new brews and vote for a winner. The winner will receive a custom-engraved mash paddle to display in their taproom and a year’s worth of bragging rights. Plus, the first 500 Craft Beer Throwdown attendees will receive a commemorative pint glass.

The participating breweries are Gravely Brewing Co., Great Flood Brewing Company, Monnik Beer Company, Mile Wide Beer Company, Holsopple Brewing, and Falls City Brewing Company. RSVP on Facebook to get a sneak peek of the new brews being offered at the event.

New this year are a silent auction, yard games, a photo booth, and the opportunity to purchase commemorative growlers and fill them at the brewery booths. The breweries will also sell full pours of some of their regular offerings at the event. Food trucks, including Moe-licious BBQ, will offer fare with 10% of sales going back to the Coalition.

All proceeds from the Craft Beer Throwdown will go towards the Coalition’s collaborative efforts to end youth homelessness in Louisville. In January of 2017, the Coalition for the Homeless and 50 community partners embarked on a campaign to end homelessness among Louisville’s unaccompanied youth (age 24 and under) by the end of 2020. Since last summer, the Coalition and its partners have reduced youth homelessness by 50 percent.

The 2nd Annual Craft Beer Throwdown is presented by White Picket Real Estate. For more information about the efforts of the Coalition for the Homeless in Louisville, visit www.louhomeless.org or call (502) 636-9550.
