Look Who's Pictured in District 4

mural

Louisville artists teamed up to paint several murals at Louisville's David Armstrong Extreme Park, a 40,000-square-foot public skate park in Butchertown.
The artists partnered with the city of Louisville and Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith, (D-4th District), more than a year ago with the idea to transform the skate park into an outdoor art gallery, complete with murals painted by a group of talented visuals artists, to help combat graffiti that has previously plagued the park space.
“This mural is truly an expression of the energy and colorful nature of this park and I want to thank the artists who brought their unique graffiti style forward for everyone to appreciate,” Sexton Smith said in a news release. “Let this mural be an inspiration and attraction that leads to other creative works in District 4.”

mural2

The mural includes a wide range of work, from a large Louisville title banner, complete with a shot of a skateboarder on a handrail, to abstract markings with fleur de lis details.
The crew  behind the mural are Wilfred E. Sieg of Art Cartel, three members of the group Often Seen Rarely Spoken — who asked not to be identified to keep the focus on the art — and Braylyn 'Resko' Stewart.

"It is something the community can be proud of. The obscene and negative graffiti made it somewhat of an eyesore but now, you can bring your family and friends down," Sieg said. "It's more approachable."

Councilwoman Sexton Smith Honored Col. Arthur M. Walters with his family at  the unveiling of an honorary street sign located near the Louisville Urban League at the intersection of S. 16th Street and West Broadway. Pictured are Col. Walters children.

Portland Historical Highway Marker Unveiling at 15th Street & Portland Avenue recognizing the Louisville to Portland Turnpike.

By the late eighteenth century, large boats carried people and products to villages dotting the banks of the Ohio River. Yet the boats had to halt at the 26’ drop at the Falls of the Ohio where Louisville is today. Horse drawn wagons slogged along dirt paths until a plank toll road connected the cities. The 3 mile long Turnpike opened 1818 and greatly reduced the time it took to make the trip, and the route eventually became Portland Avenue.
Speaking at the marker unveiling were; Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton,  Kerrie Clifford, Portland NOW, Dr. Amanda Higgins, Kentucky Historical Society, Brenda Duffey, PNI  and Judy Schroeder, Board Member, PNI and 5th generation Portland Resident.

Louisville United Against Violence brought churches, local organizations, elected officials, students and everyday citizens together to discuss issues and talk about community solutions to a problem plaguing communities. on Sunday at the rally against violence in Louisville.

Members of local gun control groups also spoke at the event stressing the need for common sense gun reform and participation in government through voting.
Several elected representatives were in attendance at the event, either speaking or listening to concerns from speakers and citizens alike.

Congressman  Yarmuth said it was encouraging to see so many people taking a stand against violence. "This is something that continues to damage everyone in the community so I'm thrilled that so many people have come out today to express their concern and their commitment to work on it."

After the rally, groups hit the streets with signs, holding hands along West Broadway to send their message against violence loud and clear.

New Way to Report Illegal Dumpers

dumping

See Something Say Something!!!!

We all know that illegal dumping--putting waste on property that is not licensed as a disposal facility--is an eyesore that is expensive to clean up, diminishes quality of life, discourages economic development and even sends plastic debris into our waterways.

That's why people caught dumping along our city's alleys, sidewalks, fields and roadsides are subject to fines and impoundment of any vehicle used in the dumping. That's where citizens can help with the problem. If you witness illegal dumping while it's happening, report it.

We've developed a new online form you can use to tell us where it happened, describe the vehicle(s) involved, preferably with license plate number(s), and even upload pictures. Of course you can always call Metro Call 311 or 574-5000. For more information about illegal dumping, including a link to the reporting form, visit our illegal dumping webpage.

Registration Open for the Brightside & Passport Health Plan Community-Wide Cleanup

bright

Registration for the Brightside & Passport Health Plan Community-Wide Cleanup is now open!

The cleanup will take place on Saturday, October 20th with suggested times of 8:00am until 12:00pm. No worries if this specific day does not work for your group. We will support any cleanup that happens within the weeks surrounding October 20th.

All cleanup teams will receive bags and gloves at no cost and the first 5,000 volunteers will receive a free t-shirt. Brightside welcomes groups of all sizes, big and small. If you are unsure about where you would like to clean, please call or email and we will be happy to offer a suggestion.

Supply pickup will be held on Sunday, October 7th in the Community Room at the Iroquois Park Amphitheater, 1080 Amphitheater Rd, 40214 from 2:00pm until 5:00pm.

All supplies are pre-packed by group for team leaders to collect. If a group fails to pick up their supplies on October 7th and they have t-shirts, the t-shirts go to other teams on a first come, first served basis. Groups who do not have t-shirts can call Brightside on Tuesday, October 9th to see if any t-shirts have been returned.

Cleanups are an integral part of Brightside's mission and without the help of your volunteer group, and many other volunteers throughout the year, we could not achieve our goals of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Louisville.

We look forward to seeing all of you this fall!
