Louisville Metro Resilience and Community Services (RCS) is offering pre-registration for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Subsidy Component. The pre-registration will begin on Wednesday, October. 3, and end on October 31. Pre-registration is for Jefferson County residents who are elderly (60 years or older) or disabled and receive a fixed income (Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits).This pre-registration phase is for the LIHEAP Subsidy Program, meaning eligible residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills.

 Applicants must provide the following documentation:

• Proof of all household income for the preceding month (Food Stamp award letter, Social Security Award letter, pay stubs, etc. or proof of $0 income. Note: Zero Income forms are available at the Resilience and Community Services office at 701 W. Ormsby Ave., Suite 201 as well as the six LIHEAP locations listed below or by clicking here.
• Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
• Most current heating bill; or statement from your landlord if heating expenses are included in your rent; or statement from your utility company if you participate in a pre-pay electric program. Please bring the account number and name on the account for all heating fuel sources and electric. 

Eligible residents who wish to apply during LHEAP Early Registration are required to make an appointment in advance. Starting today, Sept. 26, the toll-free automated appointment system is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The caller can follow the prompts to get the information needed and/or to schedule an appointment if available.  The system provides a confirmation number indicating that an appointment was successfully scheduled.

• Choose the desired location for your appointment (the six LIHEAP office locations are listed below.)
• Choose a date/time for your appointment
• Record your name – say and spell your first and last names slowly and clearly
• Enter a contact phone number
• Enter your 12-digit LGE account number (if applicable)
• Enter the last four digits of your Social Security number and date of birth
• Receive your appointment confirmation number (have pen/paper ready)
• Appointment details (location, date and time) will be repeated
• List of documents to bring to the appointment will be given

The deadline for registering to vote in Kentucky before the 2018 General Election is rapidly approaching and it’s easier than ever to do so.

Tuesday, October 9 is the last day to register to vote in the November 6 election. Kentuckians can now register to vote, and check and update their registrations online, at this website.  

Voters who will be outside Jefferson County on Election Day are among those who can vote absentee.  More information about voting absentee, both by mail and in-house, is here.

If you qualify to vote by absentee ballot, you can do that at the Jefferson County Clerk’s Election Center, which has moved to 701 West Ormsby Avenue, Suite 301, beginning September 24.   Here’s the schedule:

The 2018 Brightside & Passport Health Plan Fall Community Wide Cleanup is on Saturday, October 20th! Last year's fall Community Wide Cleanup saw over 8,500 volunteers clean up our city and this year, we want to shatter that number!

We encourage all residents to take part in the Community-Wide Cleanup. The event is a great service opportunity for boy/girl scouts, sports teams, faith groups and community organizations. It could also be a corporate team bonding opportunity! 

Cleanups are an integral part of Brightside's mission and without the help of volunteer groups, and many other volunteers throughout the year, Brightside could not achieve their goals of a cleaner, greener Louisville.

The annual cruises from Riverview Park are set to sail on Sunday October 7th. We are excited to offer cruises again this year from Louisville’s newest riverboat, the Mary M. Miller!

This is a free event but seating is limited. To reserve your spot, you can stop by Southwest Community Ministries at 8504 Terry Road during their regular weekday business hours of 9 am—3 pm. A $5 suggested minimum donation per seat will reserve your spot. Those wanting to attend can also board the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cruises are at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. with boarding beginning one half hour before each.

Volunteers of America have recently opened new addiction recovery locations to better serve the community. They have several programs at 1436 South Shelby Street. Freedom House is a residential program for pregnant and parenting women. Shelby Men’s Recovery Center is also located on South Shelby. This is a 90 day residential program for men, where clients are able to work while seeking treatment. They have Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and services for men, women and families. These services are available at 2500 West Broadway and 4303 W Broadway. Transitional Housing will be available in July for homeless women with children who would like to continue their sobriety at 4303 W Broadway

If you are know someone who may be interested in VOA’s programs, please contact the intake office at 502-635-4530. They’re able to do a quick screening, verify their insurance, and set up an intake date and time.

United Parcel Service in Louisville is ready to hire 2,600 people for the holiday season.

In a release, UPS said full and part-time seasonal jobs as package handlers, drivers and driver-helpers is a good entry to a permanent position with the company. More than a third of seasonal hires land permanent jobs after the holidays - including part-time jobs -- include healthcare and retirement benefits.

 At  UPS Louisville, part-time employees are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in tuition assistance through the company's Earn and Learn program.

Emelie Weber is a fiber artist currently living and working in Frankfort, KY.

Emelie weaves wall hangings, home decor, and scarves on her floor loom. She primarily works with naturally derived materials, such as cotton, hemp, linen, bamboo, and Tencel. By focusing on materials and technique, Emelie’s work explores the tactile relationship between landscape and memory. Her weavings often incorporate dried plant materials and botanically dyed fibers. Emelie also weaves on non-traditional frame looms made with found items and gathered natural materials.

In addition to weaving, Emelie also enjoys spinning yarn, coiled basketry, embroidery, and drawing. Emelie’s work can be found year round at Silo Ridge Makers Market in downtown Frankfort, KY and online at www.lunadendron.com. 

WHAT IS THE VOICE OF DEMOCRACY PROGRAM?

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program.  Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, Why My Vote Matters.

WHY SHOULD I ENTER?

Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the Post, District, state and national level. Department (state) winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2019, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its VFW Auxiliary and receive their portion of $155,500 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.

THE RULES Who can enter?

The Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades 9-12 by the Oct. 31 deadline, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States, its territories and possessions. Although U.S. citizenship is not required, students must be lawful U.S. permanent residents or have applied for permanent residence (the application for which has not been denied) and intends to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity allowed by law. Foreign exchange students, students age 20 or over, previous Voice of Democracy first place state winners, GED or Adult Education Students are ineligible.

All entries competing at the Post level must be in the hands of that VFW Post by midnight, Oct. 31, 2018.
